THEME: PERSECUTED BUT PROTECTED

TEXT: DANIEL 6:13-24
13. So they answered and said before the king,
“That Daniel, who is one of the captives from
Judah, does not show due regard for you, O king,
or for the decree that you have signed, but
makes his petition three times a day.” And the
king, when he heard these words, was greatly
displeased with himself, and set his heart on
Daniel to deliver him; and he labored till the
going down of the sun to deliver him.
15. Then these men approached the king, and
said to the king, “Know, O king, that it is the law
of the Medes and Persians that no decree or
statute which the king establishes may be
changed.”
16. So the king gave the command, and they
brought Daniel and cast him into the den of
lions. But the king spoke, saying to Daniel, “Your
God, whom you serve continually, He will deliver
you.”
17. Then a stone was brought and laid on the
mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his
own signet ring and with the signets of his
Lords, that the purpose concerning Daniel might
not be changed.
18. Now the king went to his palace and spent
the night fasting; and no musicians were brought
before him. Also his sleep went from him.
19. Then the king arose very early in the morning
and went in haste to the den of lions.
20. And when he came to the den, he cried out
with a lamenting voice to Daniel. The king spoke,
saying to Daniel, “Daniel, servant of the living
God, has your God, whom you serve continually,
been able to deliver you from the lions?”
21. Then Daniel said to the king, “O king, live
forever!
22. My God sent His angel and shut the lions’
mouths, so that they have not hurt me, because I
was found innocent before Him; and also, O king,
I have done no wrong before you.”
22. Now the king was exceedingly glad for him,
and commanded that they should take Daniel up
out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of
the den, and no injury whatever was found on
him, because he believed in his God.
24. And the king gave the command, and they
brought those men who had accused Daniel, and
they cast them into the den of lions—them, their
children, and their wives; and the lions
overpowered them, and broke all their bones in
pieces before they ever came to the bottom of
the den.

GUIDE TEXT
Daniels enemies slandered him and accused him
of disobedience to the royal edict (v.13) and
reminded King Darius to execute the penalty by
throwing Daniel into the lions’ den (vs.15-16).
The King, obviously unhappy, gave royal approval
according to the irrevocable law of the kingdom.
A stone was used to seal the entrance of the
den (v.17).
It seemed that all hope was gone for Daniel that
night. The next day, the King hurried to the lions’
den and to his surprise, found Daniel alive, kept
by the power and providence of God. God had
shut the mouths of the lions (vs.19-22). The
overjoyed King had Daniel released from the den
and threw his accusers into the lions den where
they were devoured.
Are you being persecuted for righteousness
sake? God will not only protect you but He will
provide a way of escape. You may be
experiencing hard times caused by others. You
may be weeping at night because of your
situation.
Trust the Lord. Look unto Jesus. He will fill your
mouth with laughter and judge your detractors.
Rejoice and be glad for you have a great reward
in Heaven (Matthew 5:11-12).

PRAYER: Father, strengthen my faith in
you and cause me to rejoice in the midst of
persecution. Amen.

THEME: A ROYAL TESTIMONY

TEXT: DANIEL 6:25-28
25. Then King Darius wrote: To all peoples,
nations, and languages that dwell in all the
earth: Peace be multiplied to you.
26. I make a decree that in every dominion of my
kingdom men must tremble and fear before the
God of Daniel. For He is the living God, And
steadfast forever; His kingdom is the one which
shall not be destroyed, And His dominion shall
endure to the end.
27. He delivers and rescues, And He works signs
and wonders In heaven and on earth, Who has
delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.
28. So this Daniel prospered in the reign of
Darius and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

GUIDE TEXT
In our text today, we read that king Darius was
so excited with the experiences of Daniel in the
Lions den that he gave a royal testimony. The
salient points of his testimony include:
i) People everywhere should fear and reverence
the God of Daniel. (ii) God is alive and lives
forever (v.26). (iii) Gods kingdom and dominion
will never end (v.26). (iv) God rescues, saves
and does miracles (v.27). (v) God rescued Daniel
from the power of lions in the lions’ den (v.27).
Notice also that because God was with Daniel,
he prospered during the reign of King Darius and
the Persian king Cyrus (v.28).
It is worthy to know that God is faithful and can
deliver to the Uttermost. As we go about our
duties today, let us learn to fear and reverence
the Lord. Let us acknowledge the ever living and
everlasting God whose kingdom and dominion
are eternal. Let us expect Him to rescue and
save us from all our problems and to do the
miraculous in our lives, service and ministry.
May God give you a special testimony of his
supernatural deliverance today and may He
prosper the works of your hands.

PRAYER: Almighty God, I pray that you
give me a testimony that glorifies your name in
Jesus name. Amen.

THEME: THE HEALING POWER OF JESUS

TEXT: MARK 2:1-12
1. And again He entered Capernaum after some
days, and it was heard that He was in the house.
2. Immediately many gathered together, so that
there was no longer room to receive them, not
even near the door. And He preached the word
to them.
3. Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic
who was carried by four men.
4. And when they could not come near Him
because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof
where He was. So when they had broken
through, they let down the bed on which the
paralytic was lying.
5. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the
paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.”
6. And some of the scribes were sitting there
and reasoning in their hearts,
7.“Why does this Man speak blasphemies like
this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
8. But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His
spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves,
He said to them, “Why do you reason about
these things in your hearts?
9. Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘ Your
sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up
your bed and walk’?
10. But that you may know that the Son of Man
has power on earth to forgive sins” —He said to
the paralytic,
11.“I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go
to your house.”
12. Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and
went out in the presence of them all, so that all
were amazed and glorified God, saying, “We
never saw anything like this!”

GUIDE TEXT
Jesus arrived in Capernaum, went into a house
and a large crowd gathered to hear him. The
room was so full of people that many had to
stand outside the door. Meanwhile, four men
came carrying a physically challenged man who
could not walk. They climbed and lowered the
mat on which they carried the man through the
roof into the presence of Jesus (vs.1-4). Their
commendable action attracted the attention of
Jesus, who quickly forgave the man his sins.
The scribes or teachers of the law thought that
Jesus was blaspheming and were displeased.
Jesus read their hearts (Jeremiah 17:10a) and
told the lame man to get up and go home with
his mat.
The man immediately responded and walked out
as the crowd watched in amazement (vs.5-12).
What a fantastic healing power of Jesus! The
people testified that they had never experienced
such a miracle.
Are you sick or physically challenged? Jesus
Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever
(Hebrews 13:. What he did for others, he will
do for you.
Come to Jesus and receive your healing. You
may not have friends but as you come to Jesus,
expect your miracle of healing today.

PRAYER : Heal me Oh Lord of every
infirmity in Jesus name. Amen.

THEME: CONDUCTING ELECTIONS THE
GODLY WAY

TEXT: ACTS 1:15-26
15. And in those days Peter stood up in the
midst of the disciples (altogether the number of
names was about a hundred and twenty), and
said,
16.“Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be
fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by
the mouth of David concerning Judas, who
became a guide to those who arrested Jesus;
17. for he was numbered with us and obtained a
part in this ministry.”
18. (Now this man purchased a field with the
wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst
open in the middle and all his entrails gushed
out.
19. And it became known to all those dwelling in
Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own
language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.)
20.“For it is written in the Book of Psalms: ‘Let
his dwelling place be desolate, And let no one
live in it’; and, ‘Let another take his office.’
21. “Therefore, of these men who have
accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus
went in and out among us,
22. beginning from the baptism of John to that
day when He was taken up from us, one of these
must become a witness with us of His
resurrection.”
23. And they proposed two: Joseph called
Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and
Matthias.
24. And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, who
know the hearts of all, show which of these two
You have chosen
25. to take part in this ministry and apostleship
from which Judas by transgression fell, that he
might go to his own place.”
26. And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on
Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven
apostles.

GUIDE TEXT
After the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Apostle
Peter addressed the 120 believers on the need
to elect a replacement for Judas Iscariot who
betrayed Christ (vs.15-20). He outlined the
conditions which each candidate would meet
namely:
(i) He must have been actively involved in Jesus
ministry from the time when Jesus was baptized
by John till his ascension (vs. 21-22). (ii) He
would be duly nominated before the election
(v.23). (iii) He would participate in prayers to
God to reveal His choice among the nominated
candidates (v.24). (iv) He would participate in
the voting process (v.26). (v) He would gladly
accept the result of the election (v.26).
Elections conducted in Nigeria and around the
world are fraught with injustice, corruption,
electoral malpractices, rigging, bloodshed, etc. In
some churches and church organizations,
elections fall short of the Biblical standard. The
same goes for elections conducted at market
unions, village meetings, corporate and academic
boards. It is time to do things Gods way! We
need to repent for sins committed in all elections
in our country and ask God to intervene in the
affairs of our nation (2 Chronicles 7:14).

PRAYER: Dear Lord please influence INEC
and Nigerians to conduct and participate in
elections your own way. Amen

THEME: SLEEP: LIKE NO OTHER


TEXT: JOHN 11:1-16
1. Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of
Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister
Martha.
2. It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with
fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair,
whose brother Lazarus was sick.
3. Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying,
“Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”
4. When Jesus heard that, He said, “This
sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of
God, that the Son of God may be glorified
through it.”
5. Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and
Lazarus.
6. So, when He heard that he was sick, He
stayed two more days in the place where He
was.
7. Then after this He said to the disciples, “Let
us go to Judea again.”
8. The disciples said to Him, “Rabbi, lately the
Jews sought to stone You, and are You going
there again?”
9. Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours
in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does
not stumble, because he sees the light of this
world.
10. But if one walks in the night, he stumbles,
because the light is not in him.”
11. These things He said, and after that He said
to them, “Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that
I may wake him up.”
12. Then His disciples said, “Lord, if he sleeps he
will get well.”
13. However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they
thought that He was speaking about taking rest
in sleep.
14. Then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus is
dead.
15. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not
there, that you may believe. Nevertheless let us
go to him.”
16. Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to
his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may
die with Him.”

GUIDE TEXT
Lazarus slept one day and did not get up due to
illness. His bewildered sisters informed Jesus of
his sickness who waited for two days before
responding (vs.3-6). He told his disciples that
they had to go back to Judea to visit Lazarus,
Mary and Martha.
Brushing off the objections of his disciples,
Jesus informed them that their friend Lazarus
was in a sleep like no other. The disciples did
not think it wise to venture into Judea to wake
up someone who was just asleep. Jesus had to
definitely tell them that Lazarus was dead and he
had to visit Bethany (vs.11-14).
The death of Lazarus was a huge shock to his
sisters but they knew what to do. They called on
Jesus. They had faith in His ability to bring back
Lazarus from this unnatural sleep.
In spite of the dangers facing Jesus in Judea, He
had to answer the invitation of the two sisters.
He did not allow the discouragement of his
disciples deter him. What do you do when faced
with a crisis? Whom do you call when perplexed
or discouraged? Call on Jesus (Jeremiah 33:3;
Matthew 11:28). He is a friend like no other.

PRAYER: What a friend we have in Jesus!

THEME: JESUS: THE COMFORTER

TEXT: JOHN 11:17-37
17. So when Jesus came, He found that he had
already been in the tomb four days.
18. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two
miles away.
19. And many of the Jews had joined the women
around Martha and Mary, to comfort them
concerning their brother.
20. Now Martha, as soon as she heard that
Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary
was sitting in the house.
21. Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had
been here, my brother would not have died.
22. But even now I know that whatever You ask
of God, God will give You.”
23. Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise
again.”
24. Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise
again in the resurrection at the last day.”
25. Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and
the life. He who believes in Me, though he may
die, he shall live.
26. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall
never die. Do you believe this?”
27. She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that
You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to
come into the world.”
28. And when she had said these things, she
went her way and secretly called Mary her sister,
saying, “The Teacher has come and is calling for
you.”
29. As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly
and came to Him.
30. Now Jesus had not yet come into the town,
but was in the place where Martha met Him.
31. Then the Jews who were with her in the
house, and comforting her, when they saw that
Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her,
saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”
32. Then, when Mary came where Jesus was,
and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to
Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother
would not have died.”
33. Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and
the Jews who came with her weeping, He
groaned in the spirit and was troubled.
34. And He said, “Where have you laid him?”
They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.”
35. Jesus wept.
36. Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”
37. And some of them said, “Could not this Man,
who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept
this man from dying?”

GUIDE TEXT
When Jesus arrived at Bethany, He learnt that
Lazarus had been dead and buried for four days.
He comforted Martha telling her that He was the
resurrection and life and had the power to make
the dead live (vs.25-26). Martha believed that
Christ was the expected Messiah and quickly
intimated Mary that Jesus had come. Mary,
followed by some Jewish mourners hastened to
meet Him. On meeting Jesus, she fell at his feet
in humility and told him that if he had been
there, Lazarus would not have died. In a show of
sympathy Jesus wept (v.35).
When a very close relative dies, the bereaved
need comfort, love and assistance. The presence
of Jesus meant a lot to Martha and Mary. They
poured out their hearts to him and He
encouraged and comforted them.
Christs humanity was evident as He shed tears
but He had a mission. His visit was both to
comfort the bereaved family and to radically
change their situation. Are you in a time of
mourning? Wait for the Lord! He will surely
comfort you and turn your mourning into joy.
No matter what you are passing through, Jesus
will turn it around for your good.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, please comfort every
hurting soul now and always. Amen.

THEME: JESUS: THE ULTIMATE POWER

JOHN 11:38-44
38. Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came
to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay
against it.
39. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha,
the sister of him who was dead, said to Him,
“Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has
been dead four days.”
40. Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that
if you would believe you would see the glory of
God?”
41. Then they took away the stone from the
place where the dead man was lying.
And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I
thank You that You have heard Me.
42. And I know that You always hear Me, but
because of the people who are standing by I
said this, that they may believe that You sent
Me.”
43. Now when He had said these things, He cried
with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!”
44. And he who had died came out bound hand
and foot with graveclothes, and his face was
wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them,
“Loose him, and let him go.”

GUIDE TEXT
One power that has kept man in bondage is the
power of death but Jesus has power over death
(2Timothy 1:10). No wonder He commanded the
people to remove the stone from Lazarus grave.
Martha complained that the corpse must be
stinking since 4 days had elapsed after burial.
However, after a brief prayer, Jesus commanded
the dead man to come back to life.
Since Jesus had the ultimate power, the spirit of
death had to bow and let Lazarus go. But the
man was still held captive by the grave clothes
that were used to bind his hands and foot; and a
napkin was used to bind his face. Jesus had to
complete his mission of total liberation by
commanding the people to loose the man and let
him go.
Indeed God has given us victory over death
through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians
15:57). Irrespective of your challenge, hold fast
to your faith.
Have you lost a loved one? Just know that Christ
has the ultimate power and He is the
resurrection and the life. Those that have died in
Christ will live again (1 Thessalonians 4:14). Fear
God and you will have nothing else to fear.

PRAYER: Father, help me realize that your
power is above all other power. Amen

THEME: PARENTAL PRAYER

TEXT: JOB 1: 1-5
1. There was a man in the land of Uz, whose
name was Job; and that man was blameless and
upright, and one who feared God and shunned
evil.
2. And seven sons and three daughters were
born to him.
3. Also, his possessions were seven thousand
sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke
of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very
large household, so that this man was the
greatest of all the people of the East.
4. And his sons would go and feast in their
houses, each on his appointed day, and would
send and invite their three sisters to eat and
drink with them.
5. So it was, when the days of feasting had run
their course, that Job would send and sanctify
them, and he would rise early in the morning and
offer burnt offerings according to the number of
them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons
have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.”

GUIDE TEXT
Job was from Uz, probably located between
Edom and Saudi Arabia.
Scholars say that he was one of the sons of
Issachar, which means that Jacob was his
grandfather. Job was a great man, in fact was
one of the richest men in the world then. God
blessed him greatly. He had 10 children: 7 sons
and 3 daughters. His wealth did not however turn
his attention away from God or push him to live
an ungodly or corrupt life.
The Bible describes him as blameless and
upright; he feared God and shunned evil. This is
an indication that he recognized that his wealth
was from God. This is quite unlike many rich
people in Nigeria who have no regard for God. It
is a lesson for the rich in Nigeria.
Probably, because of the wealth of their father,
the sons of Job were always organizing parties
from one brothers house to another. Much was
not said about the spiritual life of Jobs children.
Job recognized his role as father - as the Priest
of the family - he therefore blessed, purified, and
offered sacrifices on behalf of his children daily.
This is a lesson for parents, especially fathers.
No matter how busy we are, we should not
forget to maintain the family altar with our family
members daily.

THEME: GODS TESTIMONY ABOUT US

TEXT: JOB 1:6-12
6. Now there was a day when the sons of God
came to present themselves before the Lord ,
and Satan also came among them.
7. And the Lord said to Satan, “From where do
you come?” So Satan answered the Lord and
said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and
from walking back and forth on it.”
8. Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you
considered My servant Job, that there is none
like him on the earth, a blameless and upright
man, one who fears God and shuns evil?”
9. So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does
Job fear God for nothing?
10. Have You not made a hedge around him,
around his household, and around all that he has
on every side? You have blessed the work of his
hands, and his possessions have increased in the
land.
11. But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all
that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your
face!”
12. And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that
he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand
on his person. ” So Satan went out from the
presence of the Lord .

GUIDE TEXT
God testified concerning Job (v. there is no
one on earth like him; he is blameless and
upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.
This is a great testimony from God in heaven
concerning a man.
In yesterdays reading, we noted that Job was a
very wealthy man, having great possession of
sheep, cattle and oxen, and many children.
However, this did not affect his devotion to God.
Paul in his second letter to Timothy (2 Timothy
2:4), emphasized the need for a soldier to do
everything in order to have a good testimony
before his commanding officer.
It is important that a Christian should have a
good testimony before God and man. If we are
suffering as Christians, it should not be because
of our evil deed, rather it should only be because
of our faith (1Peter 2:20-22). In Jobs time, God
said that no other person of such an impeccable
character could be found among all who
professed faith in God.
It is the same today: many profess to be
Christians, but do not have Christian character
no testimony.
Blameless life does not free us from temptation.
In spite of Jobs testimony, God allowed Satan to
tempt him to prove His (Gods) power.

PRAYER: Grant, Oh Lord, that my life shall
be a testimony to your name.

TOPIC: JESUS CAME ALSO FOR THE OUTCAST
AND THE SINNERS

READING: Mark 2:13-17 King James Version
(KJV)
"13 And he went forth again by the sea side; and
all the multitude resorted unto him, and he
taught them.
14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of
Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and
said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and
followed him.
15 And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at
meat in his house, many publicans and sinners
sat also together with Jesus and his disciples:
for there were many, and they followed him.
16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him
eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his
disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh
with publicans and sinners?
17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them,
They that are whole have no need of the
physician, but they that are sick: I came not to
call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

MESSAGE:
In the minds of Jewish society, all were traitors,
outcasts and sinners. These tax collectors were
bitterly hated and ostracized. They were looked
upon as having sold their souls to the Roman
authorities. The vast majority were thieves,
cheats and extortionists, always adding to the
legal fee in order to fill their own pockets. Levi
(Matthew) was the tax collector in charge of the
tax station or office. As Jesus walked along, He
passed by the tax booth that had been set up to
collect the taxes owed by incoming ships. It was
in this process that He met Levi (Matthew), and
called him to follow Him.
The encounter of Matthew with Jesus paid off as
he (Matthew) invited his associates and friends -
fellow tax-collectors, to a great banquet with
Jesus in his house (v. 15; Matthew 9: 10-11).
Matthew literally committed everything to Jesus.
It is this same Matthew who wrote the first
Gospel of the New Testament.
No case about salvation of any man is hopeless
as long as there is somebody who has the heart
of love and burden for sinners, like Jesus. The
worst sinner today can become the greatest
Saint tomorrow.

PRAYER: Pray for the salvation of members of
your family.

"13 And there was a day when his sons and his
daughters were eating and drinking wine in their
eldest brother's house:

MESSAGE:
Job was severely tested; the attack on him was
complete. He lost all his possessions, his family
and his posterity in one day. The man, who was
the richest and greatest man among all the
people of the East, (v.3) suddenly, in a twinkling
of an eye, became the most wretched. His
Children, who were to encourage him in the face
of this tragedy, were also lost. As we noted in
our Saturday reading, God judged Job to have no
comparison in his consecration and devotion to
God (v.. In spite of all, God gave permission to
Satan to test Job to this level.
Many dedicated Christians with wonderful
testimonies of upright and blameless life, of
avowed fear of God and dissociation with
everything called sin, have faced, and some are
still facing severe trials. This has made them and
other people who look up to them to ask many
questions which nobody can answer. When Job
was tested, his reaction proved what God had
said about him (vs.21¬22). In all things, Job did
not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.
Whenever we are going through test, let us
remember the example of Job.

PRAYER: Keep me true Lord Jesus, to you, even
in time of testing.

comest thou? And Satan answered the Lord, and
said, From going to and fro in the earth, and
from walking up and down in it.

considered my servant Job, that there is none
like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright
man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although
thou movedst me against him, to destroy him

for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for

MESSAGE:
All that a man has, he will give for his life (Job
2:4). Truly, men will give all their possessions in
order to retain their health. The desire of men to
continue life is stronger than the desire to
maintain wealth.
When Job lost all his wealth and children, he
shaved his head, fell down on the ground and
worshipped God. But when his skin was touched,
he sat among the ashes. Affliction, especially
when it affects health, can bring a lot of
disgrace, shame and complete loss of dignity
and respect.
God permitted that this should be so (v.6) for his
own greater glory. When a faithful servant of God
goes through this kind of experience, it is
difficult to still believe the word of God which
says in I Corinthians 10: 13, "God will not allow
you to be tempted beyond what you are able to
endure." What type of affliction has reduced you
or your beloved one to sitting in the dust? What
situations of life have made your friends,
relations and colleagues to abandon you or look
disdainfully on you? Look up from that condition,
God will surely make a way of escape.

PRAYER: Pray for Christians who are passing
through severe afflictions.

EXPERIENCE

GUIDE TEXT
If there is any time a Christian feels very high
spiritually and has great courage and confidence
to face spiritual warfare, it is during or
immediately after prayer and fasting. The
physical body may be very weak, but the spirit is
very high. The devil dared Jesus immediately
after forty days of prayer and fasting. Why did
the devil choose this period to tempt Jesus?
After fasting forty days and forty nights, Jesus,
being also man, was hungry.
Our spiritual exercise, like fasting and prayer,
does not kill physical appetite or human feelings
and desires. Elijah, after a mountain experience
with God where he demonstrated his power to
consume sacrifice by fire and releasing rain after
31/2 years at his command, became so afraid at
the threat of Jezebel that he desired to die (I
Kings 19:1-4).
Jesus overcame all the temptations of the devil
by using the word of God. Though he had spent
40 days and nights in praying and fasting, he did
not start speaking in tongues when the devil
tempted him. He overcame by the correct
application of the word of God in every instance
of that temptation.
Many believers today do a lot of prayer and even
fasting, but have no thorough knowledge of the
word of God. They become easy prey and
victims of Satans arsenal.

PRAYER: Lord help us to grow in the
knowledge of your word.

When Jobs condition became tougher, his wife
with whom he lost all properties and children,
mocked Job, by saying to him Are you still
retaining your integrity? Curse God and die.
Jobs dedication to God was already a problem to
his wife. From her statement, she had never
been part of Jobs devotion to God; it had been
Jobs business.
A wife who saw her husband in the state that
Job then was boils all over his body, using a
broken pot to scratch his body - was supposed
to have compassion on him as a friend. Job
needed her comfort and encouragement most at
that period, as his friend and closest partner. A
despairing man should have the devotion of his
friends (Job 6:14a).
It is so bewildering that at such moment of Jobs
life, the thing that was bothering his wife was
his integrity and relationship with God.
Jobs three friends came, saw his condition and
did four things – (v.12). They:
Began to weep aloud deep compassion - and
these were men who hardly expressed emotion;
Tore their robes;
Sprinkled dust on their heads;
Sat on the same ash where job had been sitting
for 7days.
May we be friends in need and indeed, to our
loved ones who are suffering.

PRAYER: Lord, make me a true friend to
my friends.

GUIDE TEXT
After Jobs wife had asked him to curse God and
die, Job must have felt a deep pain of rejection
by all; he spoke out. He wished that everything
that caused darkness would conceal his birth,
and thus should not be known to man.
He even wished that the night of his conception
would have had no joy, for he would not have
come to his suffering, if he had not been
conceived and born.
Jeremiah, the prophet of God, at the time of his
trouble, made a similar statement: cursed be the
day I was born.. (Jeremiah 20:14). This extreme
condition of despair has led some to commit
suicide. It must be noted that though Job cursed
his day of birth, he did not curse his God.
The contention between God and Satan over Job
was not whether Job had his infirmities or
whether he was subject to like passion as we
are. It was whether he was a hypocrite, who
secretly hated God, and if he were provoked,
would manifest his hatred. Job proved by his
trial that he was not such a man.
It is not easy to hold on to our profession of
faith during severe trials, but Hebrew 10:23
admonishes us to do so.

PRAYER: Pray for victory over all trials.

JOB 3: 11-26

GUIDE TEXT
Job lamented his birth and thought that it would
have been better to have been stillborn than to
survive birth.
In verses 14-19, Job identifies a common factor
that levels up kings, counselors and princes, the
small and great, the slave and master, the rich
and the poor. Death is a common denominator to
all. However, rest after death is only for the
righteous, because the wicked shall be turned to
everlasting torment. There, they have no rest, but
gnashing of teeth and everlasting sorrow (Psalm
9:17; Matthew 13:41-42). Job did not get right
some of his conclusions about life.
However, what was significant during his (Jobs)
calamity was the fact that he never thought
about suicide, for he understood that it was God
who gives and takes life. In verses 20-26, Job
complains that his life was continued and not
cut off. He thinks it hard, in general, that
miserable lives should be prolonged (vs.20-22).
The continuance and length of life must be
according to Gods will and not according to ours.
Here again, Job was shortsighted because of his
problems. He could not see light at the end of
the dark tunnel and crucible of affliction. Let us
learn to look beyond our immediate situation to
hope in God.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to see you beyond
my affliction.

Sometimes, we are overwhelmed when the
tempter comes our way, as if something strange
is happening to us, or as if God has abandoned
us to Satan. This is why Peter in his first letter
to the saints said Dear friends, do not be
surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as
though something strange were happening to you
(1 Peter 4:12).
Jesus was directed to the combat; he was led
up of the Spirit to be tempted of the devil. What
do you think was the lesson from his temptation?
(1) Man needs more than bread. He needs more
than physical life and physical needs to be met.
(2) Man needs Gods life. He needs eternal life
and the word of God to overcome when the
tempter comes his way.
If Jesus had succumbed, the devil would have
made him do the following three things: (1) Take
command from Satan instead of God. (2) Fail in
meeting spiritual needs of man. (3) Spread
wrong teachings that the physical is more
important than the spiritual.
If God, by his providence, orders us into
circumstances of temptation for our trial, we
must not think it strange.
Jesus himself was tempted in every way as we
are, yet He was without sin (Hebrews 4:15). Use
the appropriate word of God, like Jesus, and you
will be victorious.

PRAYER: Lord, deliver us from every
temptation.

6. Is not your reverence your confidence? And
the integrity of your ways your hope?
7.“Remember now, who ever perished being
innocent? Or where were the upright ever cut
off?

GUIDE TEXT
Jobs three friends visited him to sympathize with
and comfort him over the trouble that came
upon him. When they saw his situation, they
mourned with him and remained speechless for
seven days and seven nights. Finally, Eliphaz,
one of them, broke the silence and made certain
assumptions: the innocent and upright do not
have trouble (v.7); they that sow evil reap it
(v.; mortals cannot be innocent before God
their maker (v.12).
In some cases of course, his assumptions may
be true but not in Jobs case. To Eliphaz, Jobs
suffering was as a result of his sins but the
testimony of his life in verses 3-7 and Chapter
1:1 as a blameless man contradicts his
assumptions.
Many a time, when brethren suffer as a result of
sickness, horrible afflictions, etc., we quickly
attribute such to sin. Though sin has a
devastating effect, it is not responsible for every
negative condition, as in the case of Job.
Let us therefore show brotherly affection to our
troubled ones by praying for Gods mercy and
intervention in their situations. Sometimes, costly
assumptions are more painful than the trouble
itself.

PRAYER: Father, use me always to bring
succour to troubled hearts.

JOB 5:1-16

3. I have seen the foolish taking root, But
suddenly I cursed his dwelling place.
4. His sons are far from safety, They are crushed
in the gate, And there is no deliverer.
5. Because the hungry eat up his harvest, Taking
it even from the thorns, And a snare snatches
their substance.
6. For affliction does not come from the dust,
Nor does trouble spring from the ground;
7. Yet man is born to trouble, As the sparks fly
upward.
8.“But as for me, I would seek God, And to God I
would commit my cause—
9. Who does great things, and unsearchable,

GUIDE TEXT
Eliphaz, one of Jobs friends had contended in his
discourse on Jobs situation that Job was
suffering because of his wickedness and to
prove his case, he made the statement in verse
6 affliction does not come from the dust or
trouble from the ground.” By implication, Job
was guilty of sin hence his advice in verse 6 for
him to repent, because righteous persons cannot
suffer afflictions. In his argument he made some
statements about God: God does great and
unsearchable things including watering the earth
for mans food (vs.9-10); God has a strong
disposition in cracking down the counsel of the
wicked (vs.12-13).
Though his statements about God are true, he
was totally wrong about Jobs case; he and his
friends knew nothing about the dialogue that
took place between God and the devil over Jobs
integrity.
It is human for people to blame others for their
troubles, especially when a righteous person is
suffering. Man is limited in knowledge; therefore
we must be careful on what we say over peoples
plight.
Yes, righteous persons sometimes suffer like
Job. When such happens, our duty is to
strengthen, encourage and comfort them rather
than being judgmental.

PRAYER: Lord, arise for the righteous who
are suffering and save them.

GUIDE TEXT
In todays passage, Eliphaz has continued to
indict Job of being the architect of his suffering.
To him, a just God cannot allow an innocent man
to suffer - Job must be guilty. He therefore
advised that he should surrender to Gods
discipline for his healing and restoration (v.17).
From verse 18, God can wound and bind up and
injure and heal, if He so wishes in a particular
instance.
This however, does not apply in the case of Job.
In order to buttress his argument over Jobs
suffering, Eliphaz goes further to posit the theory
of prosperity for the righteous which shows
through material blessings, Gods deliverance and
safety of life, blessings of children and long life.
All these, he concluded, have been proven to be
true (v.27).
Many Christians also hold the above view and
wonder why the righteous sometimes suffer. This
is a great mistake. God does not eliminate
suffering for the righteous, we must go through
many hardships to enter the kingdom of God
(Acts 14:22).
Secondly, material prosperity is not a measure of
ones righteousness. Though sufferings produce
pains, they equally produce godly character, Gods
power and eternal glory, when they are properly
handled.

PRAYER: Lord, may we always see the
gain of suffering than the pains.

DONT GIVE UP IN THE FACE OF SUFFERING

JOB 6:1-13

the sea— Therefore my words have been rash.
4. For the arrows of the Almighty are within me;
My spirit drinks in their poison; The terrors of
God are arrayed against me.
5. Does the wild donkey bray when it has grass,
Or does the ox low over its fodder?
6. Can flavorless food be eaten without salt? Or
is there any taste in the white of an egg?
7. My soul refuses to touch them; They are as
loathsome food to me.
8.“Oh, that I might have my request, That God
would grant me the thing that I long for!
9. That it would please God to crush me, That

GUIDE TEXT
In our text for today, Job spoke up to reply his
friend Eliphaz, who had judged and condemned
him unreservedly. He described the pains he was
passing through as heavier than the sand of the
seas, if weighed. He saw his afflictions as
arrows and poison from God. He thought God
was instrumental to his suffering, not knowing
the dialogue between God and the devil over his
blamelessness. This situation pushed him to
request that God would destroy him (v.9). He
had lost every hope and prospect in life.
Have you ever experienced any situation that
tried to make you think God does not exist, is not
involved in your affairs and does not care? Then
you can understand Job better. Brethren no
matter how bad our lifes situation is, we must
not give up.
There is hope for the living. Gods silence is not
His denial. He will come at his right time.
In our struggles, both small and large, let us trust
God to be in control.
He is a faithful God who will always keep His
promises. With perseverance in prayer, we shall
see the light at the end of the tunnel.

PRAYER: May I see you, O Lord, always
bearing my burden.

JOB 6:14-30

16. Which are dark because of the ice, And into

Job has continued to react to his friends
conviction over his suffering. He described them
as pitiless, deceitful and fearful (vs.14-15; 21).
They offered him no help. Though Job was
disappointed with his friends, he stood his ground
and maintained his innocence. How do you relate
with your friends who are suffering and need
your help? Like Jobs friends, with grievous
assumptions? God forbid! A friend loveth at all
times (Proverbs 17:17).
The word of God recognizes the need for the
afflicted and has instructed on what to do to help
out. Some of them include: mourn with those
who mourn (Romans 12:15); carry each others
burden (Galatians 6:2); cloth yourselves with
compassion (Colossians 3:12); let your
conversation be full of grace seasoned with salt
(Colossians 4:6); do not judge or you will be
judged (Matthew 7:1); pray for each other
(James 5:16).
When we willingly obey Gods injunction for those
who are suffering, God will make a way for them
and they will smoothly overcome their situations.
A friend in need is a friend indeed. May we be
friends in need in Jesus, Name!

PRAYER: Lord, make me a friend in need
to save souls for eternity.

GUIDE TEXT
Job, out of anguish resulting from his suffering,
has expressed his feelings. In desperation, he
has seen nothing good in his life. His flesh has
been eaten up with worms and dust (v.5).
Every hope for life was gone and everything has
totally become futile. Under this situation, the
only alternative was death. As humans limited in
knowledge about the source of his predicament,
he took to negative confessions. God, though
silent over the matter, had purposed to glorify
His name through Job but he did not know.
Christians should not despair or take to negative
confessions when passing through suffering.
Alternatively, they should confess positively. This
will help such a person to endure and see
affliction from an eternal perspective and
ultimately to triumph over such situations. We
should learn from Abraham who against hope
had hope and was blessed to be the father of
many nations.
It will pay us more if we humbly reason with God
over such uncommon matters than to despair.
He knows the details of what we are passing
through and will make a way of escape and fast
too. Desperation does not solve problems; rather
it wounds our spirit and leaves us defeated.

PRAYER: Holy Spirit, please help my
weakness so that I will not despair in time of
affliction.

GUIDE TEXT
The ministry of Jesus is a special one rooted in
love and concern for lost souls. It cuts across
every group of people on earth: the rich and
poor, educated and uneducated, privileged and
less privileged, sinners and saints, etc. This was
different from the practice of the Jewish
religious sects of his day who avoided the tax
collectors and sinners.
The parable of the lost sheep and coin which we
read of are one and the same central message.
They both place the highest value on the
redemption of mans soul. The shepherd who
loses one sheep out of one hundred sheep,
leaves the rest to look for the lost one.
When he eventually finds it, he rejoices with his
friends over it. In the same vein, when a sinner
repents, heaven rejoices for the devil has lost his
faithful one.
Concerning Jesus’ ministry, he said the son of
man came to seek and to save what was lost
(Luke 19:10). Salvation of souls is of first priority
in Christs ministry because of its eternal value.
Are you saved? Today some ministers have
shifted emphasis to material things. This ought
not to be so. Christians must place soul winning
above all other things.

PRAYER: Lord please make me an active
soul winner.

THEME: JOB COMPLAINS TO GOD

JOB 7:11-21

Job, in bitterness of soul, complained to God
about his predicament. His experiences were
overwhelming that he resorted to complaining,
thus: His bed did not give him comfort because
he could not sleep (v.13); He was having
terrifying dreams (v.16); He hated his life
because there was no hope (v.16); God kept his
eye on him and made him his target (v.19).
The above issues mounted much pressure on
Job so much so that he felt God had abandoned
and refused to forgive him. The truth still
remained that God had neither found him guilty
nor abandoned him. God still had goodwill for
Job only that he had not understood the will of
God for his life. The pressure of suffering can
force Christians to complain like Job but we
should not give in.
Beloved, God does not permit his people to
complain, either for good or bad. When the
Israelites were travelling to the Promised Land,
they complained against God, who also punished
them (Numbers 11:1). Therefore when faced with
suffering, resist the urge to complain. Humbly
seek God and present the matter to Him with
thanksgiving and He will visit you fast.

PRAYER: Father please deliver me from
the temptation of complaining in Jesus Name.

played in the life of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. He
was the foster father of Jesus Christ here on
earth and God used him to raise His son to the
age when He could become independent to carry
out His ministry.
Parents have the responsibility to bring up their
children in the way of the Lord so that they will
fulfill God’s purpose for their lives. Our text
shows how Joseph and Mary his wife took Jesus
at the age twelve to Jerusalem for the feast of
Passover.
By so doing, he had started early to indoctrinate
into the growing child, the beliefs of his people.
Joseph and Mary while going back to their home
assumed that Jesus was with them when he
stayed back in the temple. This was a costly
assumption. Christians must not assume that
their children are with them in godly matters.
Regular supervision is necessary, in terms
beliefs, holiness, mode of dressing, etc., so that
we can raise a generation that is both obedient
and would obtain favour from God and man, like
Jesus.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, give me the grace to
be the Joseph of our time, Amen.

Apostle Peter writing to the early Christians, who
were scattered throughout the world because of
persecution, addressed them as pilgrims and
Gods elect. By implication, Christians have been
chosen by God, are strangers in this world and
are on a journey to heaven. In verses 3-4, Peter
informed the believers about the benefits they
have in Christ Jesus as a result of being born
again.
These include: a living hope which cannot
disappoint them and an inheritance that is
incorruptible and kept in heaven. Beloved, the
plan of God for his people is wonderful; however
it must be accessed by faith in Christ Jesus
through a new life. Are you born again to be part
of this inheritance?
Furthermore, a believer can only partake of this
inheritance when he overcomes trials and
temptations which may come to him. In this,
Peter encourages all to be joyful when they face
such situations. They are a means to proving the
genuineness of our faith and leading us into our
inheritance.
Trials and sufferings are part of our faith; they
are not meant to destroy but to refine us. When
they come, we should not give in to bitterness
and despair, rather we should persevere,
believing that God is in control. Definitely we
shall come out victorious.

PRAYER: Lord, save all who are facing
diverse trials and afflictions.
