Inverter in 9ja? once you go that way, you will never want Generator again!, ever!! grin

Yeah, its that good provided you do your calculations very well and you have to be disciplined in the usage thats the keyword here.
I have used a 1.5KVA inverter for the last 3 years w/out as simply as looking at the device for one day, why? because it simply WORKS!!,  The only way I know there is no powere is when the Ac goes off and the fridge stops humming too. I don't even have a gen set cos my area here in Abuja has relatively 6 hrs of Nepa power daily which is very convenient to charge the unit.  My set up consist of:
1 (one) 1.5 KVA Pure Sine wave Inveter (Make is Mopower, an Indian company) Got it for 75k in 2008
4( four) 100 mah Deep cycle batteries-- Got 2 initially at 25k each and months later added extra 2 at 20k each

Thats the set up and the load on it includes a 32'' LCD TV, A 1000Watt  Home theater (you don't blast it at full volume when using inverter oo! shocked), A Sony PS3, Fans, Laptops, DSTV, about 4 energy bulbs (Buy original OSRAM bulbs, they are expensive, about 600 for a 10watt but they have lasted 3 yrs now, and still going strong!).
This unit lasts through out the day for me, honestly i can count how many times I have heard it bleep and run totally flat! and that is on occasions when there had been no nepa for about 2 days!!!.

I'm interested in putting together a set-up similar to this but I have some questions I'll like you to help me with.

Is it safe to have the set-up (battery and inverter) indoor?

Can I start with just one battery? I don't have alot of appliances at these point, I intend to use it mostly for powering my laptop, light bulbs and fan(s). Do you think I'll be able to get reasonable value from a minimal set up like this?

Thanks.

Please i need advise on solar I can buy that will carry TV, fan and deep freezer and maybe 3 bulbs...

And the cost

A fan is about 80 to 100w for the regular fans and about 30 to 70w for the rechargeable type. A TV is from 55W (if 32 inch LED) if more the wattage increases, conversely, if less it'd consume less. A deep freezer wattage ranges between 200w to 450w depending on the size, make and model of the freezer and the temperature of the items in it. The freezer draws more current if, for instance, the things inside it are not cold; and the freezer takes less current if already cold.

The favourite low energy bulb ranges from 3w to 20w. I'd assume the lamp you are using is 15w; therefore total power consumption is 45w for the bulbs.

So assuming your total load, I can say you have 300w ( deep freezer) + 100w (fan) + 45w (bulbs) = 445w

You didn't make any mention of the number of hours you plan to use it, so again, I'd assume you want to use it for six hours (between 10am to 3PM)

Energy consumed is 445w x 6 hours = 2670 watt-hours (WH)

If you are running a 24V battery system, i.e. an inverter that needs two 12V batteries to function, to calculate the theoretical number of batteries capacity required we have:

2670wh / 24v

111.25Amps dc per hour draws from the system.

Battery capacity is expressed by how many Amps for how many hours a battery will last - Amp-Hour (A.H.) capacity.

For 6 hours for a 24-volt battery, we will require 111.25 amps DC x 6 hours = 667.5AH

If you are buying 200AH batteries that will be 667.5AH / 200AH = 3.3375 or approximatively four batteries.

I see someone selling 200ah batteries 70k here. Though prices change dependent on make and quality. That means you require 70k x 4 = N280k for batteries.

Now since the calculated energy is 2670wh, you will need some solar panels to replace the 2670wh of power consumed by the devices you run.

A 300watt panel will produce in 6 hours of sunlight 300*6 = 1800wh.

But we know in reality that it will not produce 100% of its rated capacity but rather between 30 to 50% of that. Going by worst-case scenario (30%) we have 1800wh * 0.3 = 540wh

Therefore we will need 2670/540= 4.9444 which we round to the nearest figure- 5 numbers of the 300w panel.

Assuming you buy the standard Chinese clone which ranges between 52k to 60 k you will require 52k x 5 = 260k

In Summary

Battery cost = 280k

Solar panel cost = 260k

I did not add the cost of the inverter and charge controller.

I can only say the budget between 200k to 220k for both.

That makes the total cost approximately 740k.

This may be less or more depending on the quality of the product used and the person running the installation. I was only trying to give you an idea.

Experts are welcomed to weigh in on this smiley

FYI: I did not add the cost of wires, installation of the solar panels, breakers and other accessories as that is dependent on the person(s) doing the job for you. This is just purely an approximate estimate. cool

Your calculation is somewhat confusing.

You already multiplied the total consumption (445W) by 6, so why multiply the current which you derived from the power for 6 hours by 6 again?

Superb... Iv burnt it once by using a faulty extension which shorted out the output, and it was repaired. I surprise say e to still work.

Recently i made another mistake of not disconnecting it before switching on phcn supply and it burnt, its still in the repairers hands.

But for operation, its smooth. Take note iv not loaded it past 150watts in use.

Before u buy another battery, what inverter brand are you using and how do you charge ur battery? Without getting ur charging process corrected the same thing will happen again.
