Haitian American Traveling To Nigeria For The First Time by TheKongoEmpire(m): 12:25pm On Mar 28, 2019
Hello everyone since this is my first post I'll make this as concise as I can. I am a 30 year old Haitian American who is planning to visit Nigeria for the first time within the next 12 months. Since I do not want to bore anybody here with any Afrocentric rhetoric I would just say that I'm visiting to see the culture of my ancestors. Some of you may be aware of the president of Ghana declaring this year the right to abode. Although there is a large African American community in Ghana, Nigeria as always peaked my interest.

There is a brother on YouTube named Search for Uhuru who frequently visits various countries throughout the continent and it seems that Nigeria is his favorite if I remember correctly. Needless to say that has pushed my interest over the edge. That being said I would like to be in the continent for at least one year and in Nigeria for at least three months. I am an AC mechanic who is also going to University to study mechanical engineering so I hope that in the future instead of spewing old rhetoric I can actually do something conducive for the continent as a whole and for Nigeria specifically among other West African countries.

Since I hope to be in Nigeria for some time I have begin looking for rental properties. Specifically studios or mini flats. Since the air conditioning season is going to start soon in the state of Florida I will be busy for at least 6 months and hopefully I can save at least 6 months rent for this trip. I'm going to presume depending on where I stay the US dollar will take me far. That said I do not plan to live a absolutely lavish style but I am looking for recently built housing specifically within the last 2 years. I have been looking in cities in Lagos Abuja and ibadan. Since I don't have a family I would like to be in a city with a decent nightlife. To be honest I want to be in a city with a great nightlife. But as someone who sees himself as a pan African I do not want to be sidetracked and hopefully can get into productive are conducive social circles. I would also like to volunteer my time in anywhere my skills knowledge and intelligence would be deemed useful.

Any comments suggestions or recommendations or highly appreciated. I do wish I spoke Yoruba or Igbo fluently but I guess that will come with time. I don't want to make this longer then I already have so thank you for attention.

Ibadan is cheaper and with safe and moderate hangouts and nightlife. I speak Yoruba and Igbo fluently. Send me message if you need my help, I'll help arrange decent accommodation that suit your taste. If you're concern about knowing more of Yoruba culture then Ibadan is best for you and an hour or less journey to Ife, the home of Yoruba culture

be wary of cheats and crooks here who will want to be your friend to spend your money. remember.. this is an anonymous site

Nigeria is big and very diverse place with different tribes living in different location.. since you are new, you will be stopping at the Murtala airport in ikeja, that is the gateway into nigeria..my advice will be to stay and live in lagos, if possible visit the haitian embassy, you will be given help on accommodation, you might be lucky.. someone there might accommodate you for free but if you want to see the real lagos, then my best will be to stay in a low cost hotel that is safe with facilities.. hotel.ng will be of good help in finding hotels that suits your cash..and always use uber or taxify for your safety and cost but if you dont mind the local transport.. you are free to use it.. that is if you are confident of where you are going to

airbnb site can also be of help if you are looking for short stay apartments in lagos but it might be expensive.. check them out and see.

Thank you for all the replies. I plan to spend up to N2M for a flat. I'm currently using OLX to look for property. Anymore recommendations as for neighborhoods would be great!

How do I handle money? Should I try to open a bank account?

Any social events I should look into? I'm NOT trying to be around other tourists.

Thanks again.

Welcome to Africa. Lagos is the best place to be. Mind you, houses are not as expensive as you thought it is. Please, don't use Olx to find house. You can easily get one when you get here. Just stay in a low cost hotel for some time upon arrival and get a decent mini flat (under 1m)thereafter. You would live the beaches and night life in Lagos.

OK, I won't use them but it was a point of reference in addition to NPCentre, to gauge rent prices especially for new built flats (if I may be so "American"wink. What I need to do is find a way to stay in the country for more than the initially alloted 90-day stay. Nigeria would be a good pivot for the rest of the continent as previously mentioned.

Sure, it might've not been your intention...it's usually subjective. You descendants of slaves(and non) generally think condescendingly, albeit subjectively. I've seen videos on Search for Uhuru in which a lady implies: "because we're coming from America, we ought to teach them or lead them..."

Let's be clear here: if you guys a running away from a sinking system, don't presume to think you should raise it here( I know that's pretty much all you people know--that system)!

Keep in mind Nigerians are well travelled people and excel pretty much globally. We're well aware that it's not all rosy in America. So, anyone that thinks they've got teaching/leading rights over us simply because they're from America, is dreaming! (the aforementioned is not directed at OP) We won't be "taught" as the video suggested. At any rate, if there's going to be any "development" of the continent and its people, it's most certainly going to be championed by locals first, and not going to be on the back drop of a sinking system!

Now that's out the way, welcome, man!

You might consider ignoring responses which does not help what you are looking for.

Having read your requirements and needs, I would strongly advise you visit Abuja. You can easily blend into the Nigerian lifestyle faster starting from Abuja when compared to Lagos. Even Nigerians are told to shine their eyes when visiting Lagos the first time let alone foreigners. And the good thing is, you can easily visit Lagos from Abuja at cost less than $100 anytime you wish.

A budget of $4000 can give you a decent accommodation in a place you can be sure of 20 hours of power in Abuja City. Abuja is the capital of Nigeria and has good planning and setting compared to Lagos.

One thing that stands out from the comments above is the fact you need to be very careful. Immediately you step into Nigeria, create an account with a bank, do not move around with cash.

This is the reason I strongly recommend you start from Abuja. At least you will have a fairer experience of Nigeria than you would with Lagos. Remember, $20k is like about N7m.

Wishing you the best in Nigeria.

I want to end this by telling you to be careful and very careful.

1. As a Haitian American, there's already a disconnect b/t AAs vs everyone else. Trust me.

2. The US and the West is a sinking ship. No civilization or empire lasts forever. The white birth rate is below replacement across the whole West while the top 19 of 20 countries are in Africa. This fact is so prevalent, white supremacists are showing their true colors across the internet. All you have to do is read the comment section is videos are demographics.

3. I will go where I am wanted and celebrated. Surely you'd have the same to say if I was European, no?

4. I'm well aware of Nigerians through out the world. Where do you think Haitians came from? smiley cheesy

5. I'll teach when asked and ask when I need teaching. Again, I'm not an English you views you as subjects and needing of civilization. I'm Haitian — we killed all the Europeans grin

Omo Iya mi (brethren) let me be honest with you. If you really want to experience Nigeria in it's true form, Lagos is you best option, don't even goto ibadan because it's not as lively as Lagos, although it's rich in cultural heritage and relatively cheap. If you want to settle in Lagos, I suggest you stay at ebute meta, ikeja axis, surule, my best recommendation is gbagada area. (no go Lagos Island oooo)

Second advice: don't act foreign, try to master Nigerian accent ( one or two nollywood movies should help you learn that). Learning pidgin will do you great help because almost every tribe understand our pidgin English. But since you will be staying in Lagos, Yoruba language will come in handy in variety of ways atleast 80% of igbo people that I know can can speak or understand Yoruba (some even speak it better than the real Yorubas)

Third advice: nwanne (brother), don't flash your dollars publicly o, especially in a crowded area. I suggest you goto yaba (bureau de change) or any Nigerian bank to change your dollar to Naira soon as you get here.

Fourth: Try to dress like a Nigerian when you get here. Your appearance will make you feel among and others will perceive you to be a regular person who already knows the status quo. In the short run, they won't bill you much when selling stuffs to you cus they will think you know alot already.

Lastly: if you want to make friends with any Nigerian lady/guy, be sure that they are okay on their own. Because most of the people who would want to befriend you will do that just to see what you can offer them. Although there are good average Nigerians who don't care about befriending a foreigner to get something from them. All they wanna do is help you catch fun and blend you in.

Fun tips

-Visit our national stadium at surulere every Saturday (the stadium is not really great, but the athletes are)

- There is a particular bar under the bridge at funsho Williams Avenue, that's place is lively too

- Ikeja mall is also a cool place to visit

- just so you find your way to ibadan, plz visit university of ibadan zoo and help me to greet imade ( an old gorilla)

- if you want to club, goto Lagos Island but don't get drunk, our drinks here are very strong. Infact don't even near orijin bitters at all

Oh and don't forget to try these foods before leaving... You don't chew them, you swallow them ni o, or else they get sticky on your teeth

Amala + gbegiri and ewedu soup
Pounded yam + efor riro soup
Yellow eba + egunsi mixed with ogbonlor soup
Moi Moi and Eko
Agohin beans + soft white bread
Nigerian jellof rice ....

It's good you've expressed your interest to visit this country. I am currently based in Lagos and I work with a financial institution. I could show you around if you wish. Ask for my number if you think you need me to show you around. Stay safe G.

Not particularly. I flat out dont want them. Nothing good ever comes off an african-non African relationship...for the African, anyway. BTW when I say African, not geo limiting.

Again, you or any descendant of slaves are absolutely welcome...as long as you guys are rid of condescension--direct or indirect. Oh and, are absolutely conscious of the fact that you can, and most likely will be used by our mutual enenmy. Yes its happened before--Liberia!

We're brethren, welcome!

Yes, we've got tons to do!
