Singer Burna Boy has joined other celebrities to speak up against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, (SARS), after their operatives killed a young man, Johnson Kolade ,yesterday in Lagos. According to Burna, until we are ready to fight SARS and the powers that be, nobody should include him in the hashtag because we are all 'pussys'. he's right. we shout #endsars whenever something happens, mostly recorded events. After a week or so, e don end. everybody goes back to their normal business. I stand with Burna boy.It is not about shouting#endsars everytime a casualty courtesy of the excesses of SARs occurs.We really need to make appreciable strides towards that effect. It is baffling why the police force is hesitant to dissolve SARS agency.They have outlived their usefulness(if they even have any).Since their inception,what has characterised them is their penchant for unwarrantedly harassing innocent citizens and their irrepressible urge to shoot anyone at the slightest provocation. Any attempt to revamp them would be fruitless because what SARs need in my opinion is psychological overhaul of their members which would be impossible to implement in a country like ours where important measures put in place to remedy a problem are paid lip service to and not the preposterous reformation they underwent at the behest of Osibanjo that involved only change of uniforms. Here are the points: 1. This country must learn how to publicly punish evil doers be it SARS, Senators, Legislators, Governors, Ministers, Police, Military, etc. This will serve as a deterrence for others who wanna follow in their footsteps. 2. Shooting sporadically is a sure sign of poor training. Police do it. SARS do it. This is not done anywhere else in the world as far as I can tell. Only in Nigeria will a security agent enter a crowded place and start shooting carelessly. This training issue must be systematically addressed. If you hand over a killing machine to someone who is not trained then what do you expect? Especially if that some1 has a very low IQ to start with? 3. Nigerians have to start questioning their politicians about these issues. Ask them what they intend to do about SARS and police brutality.
