Hmmm. Ndoki being an Ijaw clan seems a bit farfetched. I mean, how are they related? what are the links? When did Ndoki stop being an Ijaw clan that they are now reuniting?

@pazienza & HopeAtHand. Besides nairaland, I don't see anyone claiming another tribe as Ijaw. Linguistically, the Ijoid tribes are similar. Culturally, some are more similar than others. The affiliations did not come out of thin air. If a Nembe man speaks, a Kalabari, Okrika, Ibani, Biseni and Akinima person will understand what he says to an extent as the languages are similar (should i say dialect ). It is difficult for a Kalabari man to grasp anything an Izon man says, but fluent speakers will understand a few sentences. A Kalabari man can be understood by many Ijoid tribes especially in rivers state.

There is no "forced" association. What about the Obolo? (I presume this is what HopeAtHand referred to as claiming Ibibio). Most people call them "Ijaws" simply because of their language and history. Their language is Ijoid (not Ibibiod as most people on nairaland claim) with Ibibiod and Igboid influences. What they choose to identify as is entirely up to them.

I'm not gonna talk about Bonny and Opobo because it seems some people are not abreast with reality. Moaning about it changes nothing on ground.

Your post seems very honest and free from the sort of propaganda this sorts of topics usually attract. However, why do you think the Ndoki (being Ijaws) is far fetched?

I have been hearing this claim about Ndoki being Ijaw for a while now but anytime I talk to offline Ndokis I get conflicting responses. While some outrightly deny it pointing to some far off interaction with Ibanis, others say that they were actually Ijaws. Someone actually told me that a lot of older Ndokis were fluent in Ibani. This may be the case because I have met a lady that I initially thought was from Rivers State only to later find out she was actually Ndoki from Abia. She even had an Ijaw name.

It may also be that ethnic divisions was a lot more fluid in the past than it is at the present time. It could be that these groups we struggle to classify along these hard lines were made up of people with differing origins. It could be that Ndoki in the past simply identified as Ndoki and while speaking Igbo did not give a lot of importance to whether they were Igbo or not because that classification had very little political value as the larger Nigeria we see today didn't exist.

You're very correct. No one bothered about ethnicity those days. What matters most was survival and ease of business. This Ndoki connection to Bonny actually tells a lot. The Ndokis were business people who were able to connect so much with the Ibanis hence the acculturation. There's this masquerade found among both groups called Nwaotam. Till date that masquerade is still displayed in Bonny town. It's origin is from Ndoki. This clearly tells that Ndoki people were pure Igbos right from the onset. Opobo and Bonny has a dual identity. It's like that in many other regions of the world.
