There is no monopoly here. An average customer would opt in for quality service delivery with easy access to the network. This is what other networks lack hence the major operator continues to enjoy large patronage. Forget that assumption that many Nigerians are stock to a particular service provider because that was their main line. If you watch closely, you would discover that mtn keeps adding subscribers on daily,monthly and yearly. bases.Haven't you for once thought why it keep increasing? These are what I noticed about them;
1. Mtn knows that attention is been shifted from calls to data hence to get more customers, they introduce 100% data bonus for a limited time. More customers will opt in because their browsing speed is fair in many states
2. Mtn copied it's competitors hence the introduction of yanfuyanfu plan. Infact they copied airtel's innovation including price adjustment.
3. Investing less on celebrity for publicity. You would notice that many of her ambassadors are rarely used these days on advertisements. This is as result of no positive significant impact on their sales. Many Nigerians are wise hence they would opt in for a product that would be beneficial. A good example is the recent use of two young Nigerians on their advertisements for Instagram bundle plan although such strategy may be to reduce cost .
4. Large economies of scale: They enjoy this that is why their call rates are still cheap( including international calls). They call tariffs are targeted at certain market segment unlike other operators with the exception of airtel that have high call rates. Mtn can afford to reduce it tariff to N5 and still make profit because of this however with the persistent rise in the cost of goods and services, they wouldn't consider that. Although there have been slight adjustment in two of tariffs as a result of this phenomenon.

you made very imlortant points and I agree with you but I want to bring to light the untapped opportunities in telecom. It is still the same monopoly because you mentioned the reasons that are very visible to all. Of course you don't know what NCC does with MTN that undercuts their competitors. Come to think of it why is that all the Nigerian billionaires are all about oil and none is investing in telecomm only adenuga. Imagine if MTN was owned by several nigerian firms as it is in oil, my brother many families would be rich. Of course you know MTN is South African. Most of the time they underreport their earnings to the government, pay bribes to the regulatory bodies and off they go just like the oil mncs, sending money to their countries. In a nutshell, what I am trying to say is that so many foreign countries are milking billions from us through monopoly, while the govt turns a blind eye. Unbundles these companies give to Nigerians and let our people prosper. Even in the oil and gas sector, all the oil servicing companies combined cannot generate 300 billion in three months and one company is pulling out 300 billion in three months from our country and we are clapping.

Yeah I agree with you on this but why aren't the billionaires looking at the telecom apart from Adenuga?
We so concentration on oil and gas when they can diversify?. Multinational companies would always circumvent because our system is corrupt. The last time they placed huge fine on mtn but many Nigerians were wailing without looking at the crime committed. They were too sympathetic towards mtn because of their personal benefit.
