Offkey:been following your thread from Boston to Nigeria and your little squabbles with cityngr

Hehehe I have no squabbles with heavenlybang...rather he needs me to feel relevant about his choice of the derecrept apparition he acquired from Boston..... Now he's graduated to needing my personality in life to give his existence a meaning...hence his creation of a new moniker legalo to mimic me.... This only happens when your life is so dark and you need reflections from someone to light up your life.... He should enjoy my shadows where he rightly belongs!! grin grin

gurus in the house, I greet you all. I've been wanting to buy a car for my wife after selling her 1998 Sienna but I've been so confused as to what to buy. after much pondering, I've narrowed my search down to Camry (big daddy) and Highlander (200-2007 series). aside the 4cylinder and 6cylinder engines they both carry respectively, is there any other thing I need to consider? what would the gurus advise I buy.

NB: I'd also drive the car when in town and I'm a 6ft 2inches guy and I'm considering the naija-used of both cars. thank you

it's a good car, reliable though body parts are a bit on the high because there seems to be no Chinese clone in the market and tokunbo aren't much. But a solid car all the same whether it's the Mazda variant or the mariner. They use same engine throughout the line.

Thanks for the response.... Is it advisable to get a naija used?

Do all the important inspection if the faults aren't bank breaking you buy.

Naija used cars are not advisable
Even with inspection, u will still have to deal with alot of hidden faults

I am currently dealing with one naija used now, already regretting why i bought it, from one issue to another, d problems are unending. I won't even advise my enemy to buy a naija used car.

Mechanic is quite experienced
They can't see everything no matter how experienced they are, there are hidden faults that will start popping up when u start using d car as long it has been used in Nigeria, they may not be major fault thou, but will just keep coming

You were simply unlucky with your choice. My 1st car is a Nigerian used car bought really cheap and is still running fine even with so much abuse from me.

Some people don't know this but never buy a Nigerian used Toyota..It's always 100% abused. Small small faults would just keep popping up everytime.. I always advice people to look towards Honda for Nigerian used. Owners can't abuse it like they do Toyota.. so the faults wouldn't be much though there would still be small small things to fix after purchase Sha.. it's normal with all cars both Nigerian used and tokunbo to fix small small things after purchase

Good evening HeavenlyBang, Nurey and other great members here.

Please I would like to buy Es 350 ( NG used ). I've been seeing budget of 1.8 -2.1M on Jiji. Going for Es 350 is just my decision as I love it been classic in one way.

This is not a car I'll most likely be driving often except selected 1-2 days per week as I'm just completing my youth program and really want to use something that looks good to fuel my business and attracts top guys.

What's your opinion about the choice of car and prices on JIJI please ?

Thank you

The ES350 is a good car that stands out. My question is are you bouyant enough after the purchase to maintain such a vehicle, it's a luxurious car and parts would be on the high side also it is a used vehicle expect to change some parts with few usage times. As for the price, the least tokunbo I have seen is 2.8m, I think your quoted price is fair enough but ensure you inspect before buying or parting away with cash.

One more thing 2.1m could land you a very clean 1st generation Infiniti G35 or an Acura RL, Acura legend which are also luxurious enough to compete with the ES. But if you have decided on the ES 2m for a well maintained naija used 08 or 09 Lexus with the upscale premium trim isn't too bad either

Its a lexus, good choice.

As for the price, this is what I do which seems to work for me. I search for the prices of Toks and compare with prices of Nigerian used that are up for sale.

If the price difference is much, it's a red flag. That is not to say I can't buy, it just triggers my defence and makes me approach with caution.

In your case, that vehicle mostly sells in the 3m region when all boxes are checked. Only someone who stole it will buy it at 3m and sell for 1.8 if it's in good condition.

Also note that my model is mostly applicable to vehicles that have only had one owner in Nigeria. Considering what you need the vehicle for, vehicles with single owners post importation are your best bet.

Thank you for your swift response and recommendation Mr Nurey ! For the high side you mentioned , does that mean would be costing me alot to maintain monthly ? Please do you any idea price of fuel cost monthly on occasional movements? I can it it's on 3.5-liter v6 engine.

Thanks for your other suggestions as well ! I will have a look and see what decision is best for me.

Yes , Your model make sense totally - But it's the data I'm having currently with which has made come about such quote. I've seen people having 2,300,000-2,400,000 as the asking price and I was able to drag them down to 2.1M and ones on asking price of 2.0M to to 1.8-19M. This conclude my assertion of the current SP for Naija used model.

Just a novice question - Do you think most people who have invested a lot 2.8-3.0M on such still use them really that bad ?

It won't cost you much to maintain monthly if the vehicle is in good shape and you use it as required by the manufacturer. Heck you can even use it a whole year without fixing anything if you live in high brow areas with good roads and other sane drivers.

9L/100km highways

13L/100km city

70 litres total tank capacity, you can get better fuel economy though depends on your driving habit.

somewhere like Lagos you can get the parts but you go Waka Taya and some parts may not be readily available. If you don't mind you can always import your parts the downside is some important part replacement will keep the vehicle at a downtime constantly

Sorry I had to find u here with my problem as I've bn very sad. My Siena battery ran down today cos I left the ignition on with the key inside tho the car wasn't steaming and I was seated inside. Unfortunately as I tried to start it the battery refused to start. This has never happened b4. A good Samaritan assisted me with his battery to start mine and I put mine back inside. Ever since then my car stereo will come on but u wouldnt hear anything. I've done everything on my own but the sounds wouldn't come out even though the stereo is on.
Plz anyone with experience on how to resolve this should airpme.

You mean all the 4 speakers aren't working? The last time my car did that it was only the front speakers I just banged them and it started working again.

The best DIY I would say is to check the volume control whether it is the issue

Also check other forms of play, like CD, fm transmitter and radio to see if it works

The other things to check can only be done by a qualified rewire not a ladies job

The ones going for 2.1m should be fair. Also remember that these things aren't blue and black. The one selling for 2.1 may just be greedy and may be in a worse shape when compared with the one going for 1.8m. Can also be an overinflated price by the middleman. So ensure you approach with caution, detailed inspection cannot be over-emphasized.

As for your question, I don't seem to get it. Are you asking why someone who bought a 3m car will not maintain it properly?

Oya ooo, make una come help my guy decide again o.

He has a budget of 1.5m.
Between 2005/2006 Lexus ES330 and 2008 infiniti G35.

Both are decent naija used for 1.5m.

Consider
Class/prestige.
Speed
Maintenance / repairs
Not attractive to robbers
Not a regular car.
To be used for 3 years

Thanks.

The ES330 isn't a low quality car but against a G35 2008 the build quality, luxury and rep margin is wide.

fuel economy, resale value, ease of maintainance all fall on the Lexus side

Hmmmmm.

On one hand, if the G has had just one owner in Nigeria, it may have likely been very well taken care of. It's an enthusiast's car, and usually isn't bought by those who don't know anything about it.

On the flip, side, if the G has been abused, your friend is about to step into a world of pain. Nissans don't like abuse, especially electrical abuse.

The Lexus is a safer option.

Prestige: G has more prestige, it's not even close. Much rarer, looks sportier, and has weight to its look.
Speed: grin
Maintenance: See above. ES will be cheaper to maintain, though.
Not attractive to robbers: Depends. G looks more expensive than it is, which may make it attractive. On the flip side, the ES is a lot more common, which could also make it attractive.

If you want to drive it for three years, G definitely. ES already looks outdated.

I've owned both cars.
