Today June 19, has been set aside for the celebration of World Sickle cell day. But really is there anything to celebrate? What does Sickle cell really mean to the rest of the World? How many people, especially here in Nigeria know their genotypes? Even those who know their genotypes, how many really make a conscious effort to know more about genotype pairing for the sake of marriage and birthing children?
Even some of you educated and should know better, how many have created awareness of sickle cell disease just in their own corner of the world?
Currently Nigerian has the largest number of people living with sickle cell disease. And until we start making conscious effort to reduce this number through creating awareness we will still hold this unenviable title in years to come.

Taking the following steps to stay healthy may help you avoid complications of sickle cell anemia:

Take folic acid supplements daily, and choose a healthy diet. Bone marrow needs folic acid and other vitamins to make new red blood cells.
Choose a diet that focuses on a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains.
Drink plenty of water. Dehydration can increase your risk of a sickle cell crisis.
Drink water throughout your day, aiming for about eight glasses a day.
Increase the amount of water you drink if you exercise or spend time in a hot, dry climate.
Avoid temperature extremes. Exposure to extreme heat or cold can increase your risk of a sickle cell crisis.
Exercise regularly, but don't overdo it.

One of the major issues in Nigeria is religiosity. Tell them AS X AS cannot marry, they will tell you pastor has prayed for them. To be honest, some pastors will not even wed you if you both are carriers. We need to change our mindset.

WHO IS TO BE BLAMED?

Yellow eyes, fading white teeth
Hair Dreadlocked, forced smile
Was all I could see on her face
As her mum was smiling back at her

I looked closer
Her legs were thin too
Belly swollen like a two months pregnancy
This baby is in real pain
I whispered to myself

I tried not to look again
But, I can't
The young girl is not happy
She cannot be happy
She has learnt pain at this tender age
I cried gently.
And I left.

Hence, came this thought
God why would you allow such?
Is it a punishment to her?
What has the baby done to face this
Suffering at this early stage?


Could it be the parents fault?
Were they meant to be punished through her?
But the baby is not guilty
Or is she?

This time, I was thinking too much
Life is unfair
Throwing anything at us
Nobody is really safe

Who is to be blamed?
The parents? for not thinking?,
The baby? For what?
Life? For hosting this suffering?
Or is it God for allowing the suffering?
I cried again and left....
