Her mother was totally surprised. 'Really?'

Julie appeared to be in thoughts for a moment and nodded meaningfully. 'So, he has not even touched you?'

Her mother thought for a while. 'Janet, my dear. I want you to know that I want the best for you. I think you should not act harshly. I'm not
saying he is innocent, but.. .'

'I don't know. That carol day, the way he read his lesson. I don't know ... but something struck me about him.'

Janet stared at her mother. 'What're you saying, mum?'

Julie sighed deeply. 'When your dad and I discussed his issue, he was so miffed about the idea of you and him having a relationship. I could not
really agree with him, although I didn't voice out my reservations.'

Janet nodded. She looked at her mother and smiled knowingly. 'I can see how I fell for him. He has a look that is deceptive! Mummy, don't be

Her mother was bemused. 'Don't be ridiculous, dear. I'm not talking about any seemingly innocence. I'm talking about the aura I could perceive
about him. I think he is quite sincere.'

'Mummy?'

Her mother smiled. 'Just give me his number. I want to talk to him.'

Janet looked confused. 'What d'you want to tell him?'

'Don't worry. I just want to ask him why he must put my daughter in such a distress.'

Janet brought her phone out and switched it on. She then scrolled through the contacts and dictated Raphael's number to her mother.


Raphael was in his sitting room working on his laptop. Well, he was not really working; he was only surfing the internet. His Facebook page was opened and he had just sent a powerful message to Janet, since there was no other way he could reach her for now. His message was simple: I will never stop loving you.

Then he decided to read online news. A major local headline was the abduction of more school girls by a sectarian group. Raphael could feel for the victims and their distressed families. He silently mouthed prayers for them.

His phone rang. It was an unknown number. He picked it after the third ring.

'Hello.' It was a female voice, a mature female voice.

'Hell, good afternoon, ma'am.'

'Am I talking with Raphael?'

'Yes, ma'am. Who're you ma'am?'

'You don't need to know me for now. Becky, your friend, is well known to me. She has told me a lot about you and the promises you have
made. Why are you now treating her so bad? Why are you breaking her heart? It's not fair, you know.'

'Is that the aunty she stays with?' Raphael was sure it was Becky's aunt. Without waiting for an answer, he went on: 'I will very much like to
meet you, ma'am. She has told me about you. I don't know what came over her yesterday. She came around to my place and behaved so
strangely.'

'What d'you mean strangely?'

'It wasn't her first time of coming, but she always conducted herself decently, unlike yesterday. Yesterday, she acted very indecently, and I
had to leave the room for her at a time.

'What do you mean indecently?'

'Well, I think she wanted us to be really intimate, but I couldn't do that. I'm very strict about morals. She wanted to have her way but I stood
my ground.'

He paused briefly, hoping he was not condescending.

'Right now, she's trying to ruin my relationship with another lady. She told that one all sorts of lies.' He became emotional. 'She even said I
tried to rape her. Can you imagine, she left her underwear behind to rope me in? All these are lies. Then she gave that my lady the impression
that she and I are lovers. This is not true. Becky and I are only friends. I ...'

'Are you denying that there's no serious relationship between you and Becky?'

'I don't have to deny anything. The fact is there's nothing serious between us. All along, everything was platonic, ma'am. It was just
friendship and I never promise her anything. I was completely surprised the way she acted yesterday.'

'Are you sure of what you're saying?' The voice sounded skeptical. 'The impression I have is that you promised to always love her, but when
the daughter of the rich man came into the picture, you changed your mind.'

What an accusation! Raphael felt he was facing a court trial. 'That's not true, ma. Please you can give me your address, give me the date and
the time to come. I'll also like Becky to be there. There was never a time I told her about love or promised her anything.

'I think Becky must have been carried away yesterday. She was probably hurt by the fact that I wasn't keen about what she wanted. But
really, she's overreacting, especially in the aspects of the lies she told the other lady.'

'Alright.' The caller seemed satisfied for now. 'Thank you.'
