I know a certain Mr. James. He holds a Master’ Degree in Economics and is studying for his PhD. I understand why he is studying for a doctorate degree; what I don’t understand is how he is funding it. Mr. James teaches in a Private Secondary school where he receives N15,000 per month (about $45) as salary.
I know another James, a popular DJ who I will refer to as DJ Jamzy for privacy reasons. He is a kind of local celebrity even though he can’t speak good English. James is not educated, but he has a nice car and doesn’t wear the same cloth twice. He plays in the biggest parties in town and is a brand ambassador of a newly introduced beer brand.
Looking at the two men, I understand why people question education. To be honest, Mr. James is nowhere near DJ Jamzy when it comes to money. In fact, Jamzy’s manager earns more than Mr. James.
Reasons like the illustration above has created a big misconception in Nigeria and many other African countries. There is a slogan making rounds in most Nigerian streets today – School Na Scam. Literally, this means that School is scam. Why do people say this? There are several reasons why many Nigerians talk down on education at the moment. We generally value education in Africa, but some realities have made many to question if education is truly the key. Some of the most prominent reasons people look down on education now include:
 The richest men are not the most educated men
 Many wealthy people in Africa are not educated
 Many educated Africans are not wealthy
 Many graduates in Nigeria and the rest of Africa are very poor
 Unemployment remains a big issue in Africa
 Many street hustlers are living large
 And frivolous reality shows have bigger rewards than educative ones.
While the above are all valid points, there are numbers behind some figures the ordinary person will not bother to look at. While there are lots of people that have achieved success without education, there are several other people that attribute, at least, a significant part of their success to their educational backgrounds.
Education may not be the most important ingredient of success but it is essential. For those that can afford it, education should be embraced. There are different forms of education but the one obtained from formal institutions is distinctive. If offers so many opportunities you should not throw away for uncertainties. If you find yourself in school, appreciate the opportunity and use your time well.
Why Exactly Is School Still Worth It?
While attempting to stress the point that school is still worth it, I have tried to avoid making any bogus claim or stating any fact I am not sure of. At this point, I will discuss what I believe are the major reasons going to school is still important:
• You Can Get the License to Do What You Want To Do In Life
Most professions require certain level of education to be part of it. You can’t become a doctor/surgeon, for instance, unless you study medicine/surgery. You can’t practice law if you don’t study law, just as you can’t become a pilot until you receive formal training in aviation school. Education may be your only shot at living the life you truly desire to live. There is no need to settle for anything other than what you want for your life. If you need education to live your dream life, pay no attention to the detractors and their flawed argument and do well in school.
• Your Certificate Can Make Ways When Entering the Workforce
Unemployment is a major issue is some economies like Nigeria. Things are not so different in many other African countries but that doesn’t mean the certificate you will get from your school will be trash. There may be more emphasis on skills than certificates at the moment but that doesn’t mean certificates don’t pay again. So many organizations place their new entrants on different levels based on the certificates they present. You will never be considered for certain positions if you do not have the basic qualifications for it.
• You Can Discover Yourself in School
School can be the perfect place to discover yourself. Unless you have it all figured out and very confident that education is not something that will make any meaningful impact in your life, there are concrete reasons to stay in school. School may be the perfect ground to discover yourself and become your best self. There are other ways to discover yourself but school offers a great opportunity to do that.

Education is worth it. Being educated doesn't give you money. It makes you knowledgeable of the opportunities around you. That's the best education can do for you financially.
