You are a miserable sod for replying in this manner.

So who told you if some are left for cash that even the residents will not resort to using that route hence causing hold up.

Good. This will work if well thought out. The toll barriers need to stay there because we don’t have adequate records to send people their toll bills at home. So, if they don’t have tag, the toll barriers don’t open. Otherwise we will have people speeding through without ever paying.

In advanced country, they usually have a lane where you can be attended to manually.. so I guess same partner maybe adopted to ease those without tag or cards

You'll pay every once in awhile. They scan plates then mail your bill.

Thanks for these sane replies unlike that unfortunate imbeccile.

The scanned plates make sense.

I just feel taxing people everyday for leaving and coming back to their houses is just not fair at all, considering they already pay tax.

Why mount tolls in a mostly residential area?

Somebody gets to the barrier and for some reason has not paid the barrier refuses to open for him, meanwhile there are already like 20 cars behind honking. By the time they realise what's going and decide to manoeuvre to another lane the chaos starts.

Well they will have attendants there to collect the cash and manually open the barrier. That is common sense. We can’t have free toll gates. The state will lose a lot of money. Some people are even carrying fake plates.

Toll tags have always been available and discounts have been available too . I use a windscreen tag on lekki toll gate all the time but cash on the Ikoyi link bridge because there u still have to manually place your plastic card on the reader for it to work which defeats the aim

I thought ikoyi toll also has windscreen tag

Finally someone with brains. This should have been done long ago. The state could give discount by selling toll tags.

Mark my words that this will not solve anything. Any bright idea must take into account the kind of people (animals) you are dealing with and this I suspect is another knee jerk reaction that will lead to more problems.

There are etag lanes and automatic lanes but what happens? ....people without credit, expired Tags or no tags will clog up the lanes and create bottle necks. When you make all lanes electronic, you simply bring the lawlessness of Nigerians to ALL lanes because now there are more points of conflict....mark my words! How many times have you been held up on etag lane by someone who has no etag or no credit There will always be someone who forgot to top up or someone trying to chance his luck and trying to pay cash knowing full well his credits have expired. What is going to happen when the man visiting from Aba or Ilesha or Jos gets to the toll...how does he pay?

The solution is to remove tolls completely, build alternative routes and raise the lost revenue from other sources like vehicle tax but they wont because they are mentally lazy people who do not want to do the work required to raise revenue in a state like Lagos and so reach for low hanging fruit like tolls

Electronic tolls should scan license plates or tag on windshield. There's no reason to stop if they scan plate and mail your bill. If you have tag your account is online. Make the street fully electronic then your problem is solved.

What your mentioning sounds like toll you see at airport. Those issues exist since they don't work the same as toll I mentioned above.

AutoReportNG:
A cross-section of Lagos residents and motorists on Friday commended the State Government for proposing a “touch and go” electronic payment system that will allow motorists pass quickly at the toll plaza of Lekki-Ikoyi Link bridge.

The State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu had on Wednesday announced that the mode of toll collection at the bridge would completely go electronic by October this year, saying that the development was part of efforts to ensure free flow of traffic within the axis.

The Governor further declared the use of toll plazas at both Lekki-Epe Expressway and Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge free of charge on Thursday July 11 from 6:30am to 9:30 am, and in the evening from 4:30pm to 8pm, also in a bid to tackle the gridlock in the corridor.

Reacting, a resident of the axis, Mrs Bimbo Fatoki said the development was a well-appreciated one, saying the free access at the toll plazas hugely reduced travel time.

“This is a welcome development and everyone is happy; kids did not get to school late this because the road was free and I want to say that more of this development will be welcomed,” Fatoki said.

Another resident simply identified as Mr Alimi, said the development was an eloquent confirmation that the government of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was responsible and listens to the people.

“This development is good and it shows that the government is responsible and listens to the complaints of the people. Although I welcome this, however, in my opinion, Thursday is not the best day for the survey due to the sanitation because not everyone will come out at the same time.

“I also think that the roundabout in this area should be taken out because it is also part of the problem,” he said.

On his part, Mr John Okechuwu said he was pleasantly surprised to see the toll gate free as it was usually jam packed, adding that the electronic system would make movement faster.

A truck driver, Mr Fatai Omotayo said the electronic system was the way to go, adding that he was already using an E-card; while another motorist, Mr Coker urged government to fix the bad roads and review the traffic light, especially in terms of allocating more time to green light to enhance movement.

“I have passed through several junction before getting to the toll gate and there was hold-up but I must say I am happy with the step taken by the government on the free access as well as the electronic system,” said another resident, Mr Christoper.

Other residents, who spoke, urged government to explore the possibility of an alternative route to be created, as well as ensure that all the booths at the toll plazas are functional.

This is not about the technology for scanning, what happens when a man gets there with no money on his account, what happens when a man from benin or Jos or Ilesha gets there? You have to have the money in your account to deduct for the toll to operate. you have to have an account for this to work, what happens to the man from outside lagos, are you going to ask everyone in Nigeria to open an LLC account because they may come to Lagos one day?

Well from my understanding they are using the toll gates to recoup investment of the contractors. I could be wrong on that though. I have been to big cities in the west and there are toll gates when going from one area to the next. Having a car is a luxury in most big cities so they try to discourage car ownership and encourage public transport.

The tolls also help maintain the infrastructure especially in high traffic cities like Lagos. Infrastructure is bound to wear down really fast when there is such a high level of usage. To stay in a big city is not supposed to be cheap

that is the bottom line, they should calculate how much they are getting from The tolls and increase vehicle tax to retrieve it and spare us the aggro of toll and all this trafiic abeg

im sure if they introduce annual vehicle tax of 50k, they will get their money back. if you are driving a car and cant afford 50k you have no business being on the road, truth is over the course of a tear you will lose more than 100k burning petrol in traffic.

If he has no money on his toll card. You get mailed a bill. You can have your account set to automatically top up. If your not from area the toll scans license plate and mails you a bill. The solution shouldn't be over complicated.

If they refuse to pay tack on late fees then ticket. If they refuse to pay ticket they gey warrant for their arrest. Going to a Nigerian jail over ticket would suck so most would avoid that.
Re: Lekki, Ikoyi Toll Gates To Go Electronic From October - Sanwo-Olu by Godyke(m): 7:31pm On Jul 12, 2019
In my opinion, firstly they should open up more inner roads to act as alternatives. There are more inner roads especially the Water Corporation drive, Landmark Road through to Elegushi beach to as far as Lekki beach, Ologolo, Igbo Efon, Alpha Beach road and beyond. Most people who live around these areas may not always have to use the expressway.
Secondly they should increase more manpower to manually help in collecting money from motorists on queue, and issuing them with receipt and free them to go. This will reduce the waiting time needed to be attended to by only one person at the payment booth.

do you live in Nigeria? You talk as if you do not understand the behaviour of Nigerians

you are talking of mailing a bill to a Nigerian, especially and out of towner? laughable. There is a reason why this is a cash and carry society, The average Nigerian has no credibility, cannot be trusted and has no trust in the govt and hence any sense of responsibility to fullfil any obligations to his community or govt. The car is probably not registered to his address or his name/address is spelt wrong or backwards. A typical Nigerian will hold back traffic arguing he never received the mail because his data has expired or blah blah. These things work in a society built on trust and underlying structures for tracking people.

let us even take the scenario where a man is allowed to pass on credit. how many times is a man allowed to pass on credit before he is flagged and stopped. How much must a man be owing before it becomes worthwhile to send manpower after him? 60 times? because 60 times is only 9K are you going to send manpower to chase a man for 9k? if you stop them at the toll gate after a maximum, do you realise the tailback that just one stop creates? Now can you imagine how many Nigerians would have hit the maximum number of credit passes on any given day?

October is not far, you will see!!

Please when you talk about solutions, bring solutions that work for the your local environment. Nigeria is full of white elephant projects that have failed because they work abroad but local factors have not been taking into consideration. The oyinbo man that uses electronic toll has a sense of community, trust and a conscience and a sense that he can hold his govt to account. He is a completely different beast with a different pysche from the typical Nigerian.

Which western state that they will toll residential area so that every time you leave your house you must pay toll? 2 abi 3 tolls on that same road, although they don't have the liver to open the others. That toll should be at the outskirts of epe.

If they say they want to use it to maintain the road, I will not argue with them even though that line has been overused. October is not far, by God's grace we will be here to witness what will happen.
