In the first place, your mum knows why she did that. Only she knows your dad's weakness around women. It shows a level of bonding and affection when kids sit on their parents laps. There are many adults today that their daddy especially never carried them on their laps. However, as a girl grows up into puberty, the sitting on the laps is done with some decency. For example in this your case, if you had just greeted him as you came and sat on his laps briefly, that would be viewed as decent and morally appreciate. But if is not brief and longer than necessary it is wrong. A morally sound dad would even jokely tell you 'its okay, don't come and break my thighs, abi u want your mum to be jealous, abeg get up and get me a glass of water' . The daughter will smartly decode and understand. It is only an irresponsible dad that would allow grown up girl to sit on his laps and be gisting and watching TV. @ OP your mum knows best please listen to her, times have changed, there is nothing wrong in sitting on your dad's laps but your mum has her reasons, she doesn't have to explain herself to you all the time. For example, was there anything to suggest to your mom that this was a sexual gesture or was it just that you innocuously sat on his laps? However, I will assume positive intentionality on your part and offer that there is nothing inherently wrong with sitting on your father's laps. Your mom is wrong to sexualise your relationship with your father. By so doing, she has casually objectified you and your father to one dimensional beings whose singular motives is sexual. This can be forever injurious to all of you, but especially you, as a young woman since her message now is that there is no man in your life, not even your father, whom you can trust and feel safe with. It will also deny you the opportunity to experience the full range of your platonic affection for your parents, which is unfortunate. I still struggle to express my affection to my parents because of these kinds of unnecessary barriers. Perhaps the most damaging effect of her action is that it feeds into the prevailing culture of toxic masculinity that victimises women and forces men to project a false image of the disaffectionate, malevolent sexual predator.
