It is very rare to see an Igbo man who uses double names. But when that happens, this usually because the surname is also commonly used as a first name

I think it is because they are close relatives of Shiites. It was really amazing seeing how they demonstrated and protested for zakzaky in Abuja. I think it was their protest that made Buhari release sheikh zakzaky. cool

There are more muslim ibos especially Shiites, than catholic ibos. Anglican ibos is the least. That is why you see most of them on the forum hate obiano with passion.

Because of lack of database and for quick identification in the olden days, it was the norm in Igbo land to take up your father's first name as your surname.

It was also a sign of respect to name one of your children after your parents.

You take up your father's first name as your surname. You still go ahead to name your child after your father. What you get is double same names for your child.

Unlike the olden days where records and history are not properly documented, things started changing when Igbos started keeping history. People started bearing their father's surname instead of their father's first name as surname.

Ahamefuna (nwa) okonkwo = grandfather.

Silas (nwa) Ahamefuna = father.

Ahamefuna Ahamefuna = son.

However, the pattern is slowly disappearing because it's easier to recognize someone by his grandfather's name instead of his father's first name which might be in English language.
