Please don't do that - you don't borrow to finance an expense unless of course you can find a way to monetize it. A car will drain you financially. It's a potential liability in your life's balance sheet, unless of course it makes you money (from car hire or taxi services).

Always had access to a car right from my secondary school days (I'm a terrible driver though), bought my first car from my personal savings. In retrospect, I shouldn't have invested in an item with a high depreciation rate as a car, should have put that money in a friend's business. Almost a decade later, regrets here and there but no permanent damage.

I never wanted to buy one. Our parents always told us how important it was to build and own a house before buying a vehicle and how having one is nothing but a liability.

As a result, the first few bucks I made in life was invested in real estate. I got married and the pressure to own a vehicle started coming but Iocal man managed to resist till I one day saw a newly born baby brought to the house with keke napep.

Anyone familiar with Onitsha before the Okada ban will know that getting cabs wasn't easy. Transportation was mainly through keke, bike and buses. There and then, it dawned on me I may have to go the same route, transporting my little one in a keke napep when he comes and I couldn't let that happen.

I had to divert funds(mostly from personal savings and returns on financial investments) I was planning to invest into buying the vehicle and that was it. Looking back now, I'm glad I bought it and no regrets at all.

After researching on pros and cons, and from personal experience.
Going for a car is super important for hustle and entrepreneurship

Avoid the trend or what friends would say (like, don't buy Matrix, it's a woman's car) and go for a fuel efficient, small car. It really helps in my productivity in hustle (there were some small deliveries runs in office that brings extra money).
In handling building project, going to site and moving small materials isn't a problem.
And like you have come to experience, my wife is not jumping 3 Keke + mini bus to keep her antenatal appointment

And the car itself, I budget 1500 fuel for it every week, any hustle that makes me drive more than I should, I make sure the hustle buys the extra fuel

Your choice makes a car either a liability or an asset

Mine was a different story, I wrote the story and published it on wattpad, a month later, it had over 1m reads then someone contacted me that he is from a publishing company in US and they want to buy the story so they can publish it in hard copy. Well, I sold it for $15,000 (3.6m) after setting up 2 businesses, I was left with 600k, not enough to buy land, not enough to build house and I already have two running business. Knowing that I'll spend it, I quickly decided to buy that Honda 2002 for 450k and spend the rest on refurbishing it to my taste.

Cars give peace of mind and it gives you more class. That baby boy caused me a lot of embarrassment since it was my first car and I wasn't familiar with anything. The leg just dey pull anyhow for road. Sometimes it will cause hold up from here to Lagos. grin
Last last, I sold it for 550k cuz it was very well customised then I bought another car after buying a land.
It's my third car now. I'm a big Honda fan.

I disagree.

A car is different things to different people. If you look at a car as a liability, a wife is also a liability, a child is a liability, our old parents are liabilities, even our friends and extended families are liabilities. Hell, even a girlfriend is a liability. Yet, we keep having them even when we cannot afford them in some cases. What is the essence of life if one cannot make himself comfortable? Why should anyone refuse to buy a car saying its a liability.

Would you rather buy a car (liability) or be constantly late to work risking your job commuting in a bus or taxi. Would you rather buy N500 fuel to go to and fro the next street 3 times or pay taxi N300 each way (N1800).

A car is an unnecessary liability only when it is unreliable. A car becomes an unnecessary liability when you have another you can use or another means of travel that is time saving, cost saving and fits exactly in your schedule.

A car is always a liability, a necessary or unnecessary liability.

If you work night shift and close by 12midnight when your safety in public transportation is not guaranteed, would you refuse buying a car for your safety because a car is a liability?

In your own case, you always had access to a car right from sec sch, op doesn't. Buying your own car is an unnecessary liability but for his case, it can be a necessary liability.

Yeah, I generalised a bit and to a large extent you're right. Anyway, the context I referred to was for him/her not to borrow in order to buy a Car. I won't support that, he should save first and foremost, irrespective of whether the car is an asset or a liability. Fixed assets will depreciate over time, servicing of loans and debts will not. Interest rates don't just drop (amortisation) on their own.

The wife/girlfriend analogy really made my day grin grin grin grin
