Fortuna Dusseldorf’s German-born goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, has been called up for the first time ahead of Nigeria’s friendly with Ukraine on September 10.

Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr, called up 23 players for the game scheduled for Dnipro Arena, Igbere TV reports.

Director of Communications of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ademola Olajire, said in a statement on Wednesday that Saudi Arabia-based team skipper, Ahmed Musa, heads the list of invited players.

Tyronne Ebuehi who missed the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals due to injury has been recalled.

Scotland-based midfielder Joe Aribo also got his first call-up.

The statement said: “Equally, Oluwasemilogo Ajayi and Kelechi Iheanacho, who were cut from the roster just before the AFCON finals, have been invited to Ukraine.

“England-based duo of Alex Iwobi and Iheanacho have been listed in midfield roles.

“Germany-based goalkeeper Emil Maduka Okoye has been invited for the first time, alongside Scotland-based midfielder Joe Aribo, but there is no place for South Africa-based goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.”

Mr Olajire added that goalkeepers Francis Uzoho and Ikechukwu Ezenwa, and defenders William Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo, Leon Balogun and Jamilu Collins have also been called up.

“The rest are midfielders Wilfred Ndidi and Oghenekaro Etebo and forwards Victor Osimhen, Moses Simon, Henry Onyekuru and Samuel Chukwueze,’’ he said.

Okoye’s Strength;

” Okoye is among the tallest goalkeeper in the German 4th division aside his height he is a a typical German modern day German goalkeeper in the sense that he plays very well with his feet. The Manuel Neuer style has got to him. For the games I’ve watched he is also good in one and one situation and also organises his defence very well.

Okoye’s weakness;

” The one drawback in his game has to be his ball handling. It’s a little suspect as he drops balls more than he grips but his recovery rate is near perfect. He is also not the best in dealing with crosses and that is a problem many goalkeepers of his age have”.

Still don't understand why Iheanacho was cut. He might not been in form currently but he is, in my opinion, a key part of Super Eagles future. Rohr should have taken him and left that Nepa pole at home. As for Okoye, lets see him against Ukraine. If he performs well keep him. If he is another Akpeyi with light skin please send him back to his German mother.

I wish him all the best with Super Eagles and hope he has a long career playing for his father/motherland. Always puts a smile on my face with diasporan Africans wanting to represent the continent.

Nigerians must compain. A coach wants to try new talents in a friendly match and Nigerians are complaining. I don't even understand what a person can do to satisfy a Nigerian.

Am not surprised to see Joe Aribo name in the list. Dude has scored 3 goals in 4 matches for Rangers Fc. He is tall, quick, strong, tackles hard, very good offensively and defensively, has energy to burn, has a sweet left foot and he knows how to hit the back of the net.

At last maduka okoye has gotten his chance, let's see what he has to offer in the goalkeeping department. One day goal keepers like Sébastien Osigwe and Nwokolor will have their chance.
Ezenwa cannot be the best we have in the NPFL, let other have their chance too from the NPFL.

Tyrone Ebuehi is a lad full of potential but injuries won't let him be. When I see Liverpool RB Arnold do his thing, I always remember Ebuehi. We hope and pray Injury doesn't Mar his career, dude plays intelligently.

With the addition of a Lookman Ademola after his switch, we will be more deadlier in attack from the flanks.

In the nearest future, we will be seeing the likes of Ovie Ejaria, Ebere Ezeh, Onomah, Ofoborh in midfield. Odey, Awoniyi, Okereke in Attack.

The future is bright for Nigerian football.

Their 4th division teams have far better training facilities than our NPFL teams.

The guy could be good. But luck hasn't found him yet. Thus his continuous sojourn in division 4.

Super eagles without Mikel and Odion Ighalo will take some getting used to.
