Please read below carefully.
1. Teaching is a beautiful profession. The ONLY profession where you leave a part of you in EVERYONE that you teach.
2. You sold yourself into the situation you are in! It's not about teaching, you would have done the same, if it's any other profession.
3. Now that you've realized what's up against you, challenge yourself and work a way out. If you are good at what you do, look for real schools; learn something new; trade in something; etc
4. That school owner won't budge. He needs exactly people like you. You make his day.
5. My two cents.
grin
you are on point...God bless you real good, presently working on pulling out...

Hello,

This is just to encourage you. Do not see money as the only thing you can gain from a job. I will specifically speak about my experience as a teacher but this can apply to any job.

I served in private secondary in Ekiti state. Every end of the month the school gave me two 500 naira notes for twenty -two days of work. But I looked beyond the money to other things like the fact that the children needed me. I was the only person there to inspire them to a better life.

I did my duty gave notes, attended staff meetings and thought the children, in short, I gave it my all. I would have been satisfied with that but other things came with me doing the right thing. The school administration was both shocked and impressed. They have never seen a cooper who took their duty seriously.

By the time I left the young girls, I thought where dreaming and aspiring to greater things. The school awarded me the best cooper testimonial and a gift something they had never previously done for any before me.

Now, I only thought because that was what was given to me as my primary assignment. However, if I had chosen a teaching career that testimonial alone would have open doors for me into a well-paying school. So by doing what I had to do, I gained something that would have improved my chances for better pay and working condition and as well as helping this our already decaying educational system.

In summary, when you work do not only think that it is only the money you can gain. Anything you can add to your c.v is a boost and way to better things. Anything you can do to help children is a good thing.

A lot of people have adviced trying other things that is also very good. Few people get rich by sticking to a job so be open doing something else.

Good Luck

P.S: If you haven't already read the story about this Ghanaian teacher who was doing his duty and how it open doors for him and his country. Read it and be encouraged.

hi you don't seem to get the whole point. the day I left I made a decision not to look back. Even though I worked for the money and it's my sweat, I made the decision not to make a mockery of myself.
You keep emphasizing money but you can't sustain your passion on empty tummy or can you.

went back to the staff room and wrote a resignation letter and in the letter I told her my decision is irrevocable. When I dropped the letter, she started begging me, she even called my referree who referred me to the school to beg me but hell no, I'm done with the school and ever since then, I always thank God for taking that decision. It's 3 years now and I'm now collecting almost times × of that shit called salary.
it good to take a stand no matter how difficult it may seem. The fact is while at the private school you can't go for other interviews and you won't even just have the strength to think straight about making headway

Any job you take should put food on the table. And leaving the place eventually was the right thing to do. Self-respect, self-worth and being successful are important. I was just saddened by the fact that you felt your short stay there was a complete waste of time. That was why I wanted you to see that you must have gained something even it wasn't the salary you agreed and worked for. Even if you didn't gain the children you thought did.

I wish you success.

The longer you stay, the harder it would be to get out. Start searching for business ideas/skills. They abound on NL. Your time is precious, don't waste it in the education sector.

Please I need the links to such business ideas/ skills. Kindly help me out. Thanks.

SirWhiteFish:
I looked back at the beginning of this year, precisely 14th January 2019 when I started working at a private primary school. Three weeks later, I was told that I had to be taking two primary five students extra lessons after closing (3pm), and the pay was 1k each. With my monthly salary which was 13,000 added to the "1k" each makes 15 thousand.

You would think I earned 13k for three months abi! No I didn't. The first salary I got was the half of 13k. The woman just called the staff on the 28th of January and gave me 6.5k. I had no idea what was going on and I thought she was going to balance up at the beginning of February just like she said while addressing us but it was a lie. it was at the end of the term, the third month April, that I got to know I am being ripped off. She said she was going to pay 5000 naira at the end of the term as salary because school opened for just 10 days. It was the greatest shock of my life. A graduate, a grown up man like me, taking 5000 naira home!!
I wanted to leave but I couldn't because I wouldn't be paid for the common entrance lesson and I had not gotten any other opportunities elsewhere.

Sometimes in early February, She called me that I would be handling primary 5 Common entrance lessons which is meant to hold every Saturday and at the end of the third term the money will be shared between Me, a staff that partners me and the proprietress. She said the money will be shared 60%(I and another man) to 40%(the proprietress). The formula was very unfair and strange to me. The sharing formula seemed very strange to me and I challenged it but she enforced it.

Fast forward to early this month, precisely 3rd of July, the proprietress started acting strange and insulting all the workers and all that. The following week she sent one of the oldest staff by to inquire what will be the staff reaction if they are not paid at the end if the term. The staff said they won't agree to such and some even threaten various actions. Fast forward to Thursday 25th of July, vacation day. the woman started up a plethora of complaints deliberately she said she was going to pay 4000 as July salary. The same thing she did at the end of second term. At the end she ended up not paying a dime. She didn't pay any of us. Not even the common entrance lesson which made me stay.

I cried and stayed inside throughout Friday. I had a deep thinking, with my academic background! Was it that I didn't know my worth? with all my struggles to be successful academically I am now slaving in one private school for a paltry sum of 15k, money wey I no fit cope with as an undergraduate! Money wey be say no reach my NYSC allawe!
I really feel for graduates going through phases like this. I really feel for graduates teaching at private schools. I pray better days finds you and I soon.

Honestly teaching in a private school is the worst thing that can happen to anyone as per the work.. But then again location matters. Some don't pay much but are very prompt in the little they pay plus any lesson you do is definitely yours and has nothing to do with School.

It's always easy for them to say money is not every thing.. In as much as you work whole heartedly, wont you feed, pay bills, transport fare and family already looking up to you as a graduate. It's easy for him to say because he had a stable income to rely on as of then.. If NYSC was not paying him I am sure the narrative will be different .

Very true.. That's the challenge I am facing now.. You'll work and talk from the moment you walk in till you walk out and then their parents keep calling over one thing or the other.

Learn a skill and offer services to people for a pay....Even if you get 15k for a whole month, at least your independence and space for expansion is guaranteed...Some jobs are blunt slavery

The only remedy I see is for everyone to roll up their sleeves and fight for themselves. Graduates should learn the skill of freelancing. If you study accounting, create a portfolio for yourself, create your business card and go out there to look for clients. If you studied electrical engineering, do the same. Etc. Let graduates stop waiting for someone to build a company and then hire them for peanuts.

I didn't apply but it's just like what is said in the brochure. Choose the track you intend specialising in - preferably backend - the most profitable and study.

I'm not in Lagos presently and do have other things to do. The course IMO needs time to practice while learning, something I don't have presently.

But from my analysis, it's a better package compared to what Decagon offers.

I guess I was a bit lucky.. taught in a school in Ilorin.. starting salary was more than the minimum wage then. Opened a pension account for each staff and the school pays 70% while d staff pays 30% into the pension account every month. welfare packages every December, before I left the school the cleaner was earning 12k.
And salary increases every new session. I missed the school but I have my own dream to achieve also.
hi, what was the name of the school

Let me tell you my story. I finished my NYSC 2014 and after 7 months at home I got a teaching offer in two schools, one is 12k while the other is 18k so I took the 18k offer. The woman gave me ss1_3 booking keeping and financial accounting (p.s they are two different subject) and I write lesson notes for the two subjects. And after a year and three months, the maths teacher for jss1_3 left so she called me to start teaching them, I told her no problem if she's ready to add to my salary. The next thing I heard was of you can't do it, take your
mumu people will find it hard to ask for increment
