Hello Nairalanders, This thread is to encourage members in the Agricultural sector to brainstorm and come up with alternatives to commercial feed. As we know up to 70% of the cost of running a successful poultry or fish farming operations come from feeding. We at freshdews farms ltd have evolved a number of approaches to achieving this objective. We will be bringing to you from time to time our proven methods. This edition will dwell on Duckweed/Azolla We have successfully used Duckweed and Azolla to significantly reduce the cost of feeding our catfish. See pictures below. In due time we will update you on our effort in Broiler as well. Meanwhile you can source Duckweed/Azolla from us and we will guide you on how to grow them. 1 Like

UniversalDove: It has a fibre content of 5 to 15%, a crude protein content of 35 to 43%, and a polyunsaturated fat content of about 5%, depending on the species involved. Source Fao |

UniversalDove: The combination of both duckweed and azolla can replace up to 80% commercial feed in catfish according to our research in the farm. The protein contents from most academic literature is around 40%. 1 Like |

Cat fish is a carnivorous omnivore whose main food in the wild is smaller fishes. And someone is claiming that you can turn it to a herbivore to feed it with 80% of watery plants. Are you for real? If you can create an artificial ocean that is even big enough to produce as much quantity that can replace 80% of it's diet factoring in the fact that the water part of the aquatic plants won't count, would they accept to consume that much of what is not their natural diet? If you belief this then you'll belief you can feed lions with grass. Mind you, I didn't say it can't eat plants at all. If you can even get it to eat up to 80% of these aquatic plants, what is it's ability to digest them and convert to flesh? How long will it take to grow your fish to expected size? Will it be worth it for commercial purpose? If you can even make the required setup to provide 80% feed replacement I think you should better be looking at herbivorous fishes. 2 Likes |
