Chapter Five

Ajoke stared in silence through the opened window of her bedroom, her mind was far deep in thought of her future, making it difficult for her to live her daily lifes.

Staring through the window, she watched as her gateman opened the gate for an incoming vehicle. A white BMW rolled into the compound, and pulled to a stop.

Ajoke watched as Daniel got out of the car, offering a small polythene bag to the gateman who accepted the offer with a beautiful smile.

Her gaze was fixed on Daniel as he walked toward the front door, wearing a slight smile on his face, the kind of smile that would make any woman fall at first Sight, just as Ajoke did on the first day she met him.

It still surprised her that it had taken so long for her to realize that Daniel was such a play-boy, and she, the smart sensible girl, had been such a fool.

Daniel had a high public profile, and was on the A-list of every socialite and celebrity. Their relationship had been quite and private. He comes to Ajoke whenever he feels like, but always out of sight of press of any other interested parties.

Ajoke still didn't understand how she had been fooled, and dumping her marriage for the sake of Daniel, who care only for himself.

Despite the lesson, here she was, still been used, and still not sure of how to stop it. So lost in her thought, not noticing the presence of Daniel that just walked into the room.

Coming a few feet away from Ajoke, Daniel cleared his throat, causing Ajoke to turn from the window and met his gaze.

"Hi." Daniel smiled and took a Step toward her. " No one knows I'm here. Officially, I'm still in Abuja. I just thought I should check on you."

Ajoke stared at him silently, still too unsettled to speak. She slowly turned toward the window, staring outside.

Daniel stared at her quietly, surprising at her response. He smiled softly and pushed his hands into his pockets. "Is anything the matter?" He asked.

"Yes," Ajoke turned to face him, struggling to control the anger in her voice. "Dan, do you even care about my feelings? You comes here once in a while and disappeared for many weeks, is that your promise?"

"Hey...baby calm down."

"Don't touch me.'' Ajoke fought off a shudder and took a step back. "You've been deceiving me, Dan. Do you think I'm a fool?"

Daniel pulled his gaze away from her with a slight smile. Now she knows, he thought. As a man, he did all he could, as any other guy would do to put her to bed. Ajoke was a very beautiful lady, whom Daniel admired a lot, and made expensive promises to her, just to have a taste of her.

When Ajoke left her husband, Daniel had no choice than to rent her an apartment, after Ajoke had refused his words to go back to her husband, forcing herself on him.

On the hand, Ajoke believed him. Marrying a big celebrity like him is a big plus to her life. She never really love Femi from the start, she only married him for his money, and when things got bad for him, and a better offer came, she was having no choice than to embrace the life she had dreamt off.

"I'm sorry for not being there," Daniel met her gaze. "You should know I'm a busy man."

"Busy enough to forget me?'' Ajoke took a step closer. "You abandoned me here like I'm nobody to you.''

"I never forget about you," he said. "That's why I'm here."

"Ofcouse, that's why you're here, to satisfied your lust and disappeared for weeks, months," Ajoke folded her hands over her chest. "Are you telling me you care?"

Daniel let out a soft breath and met her eyes. "I'm not here for quarrel, I just to came to see how you're doing. If you want to make it a quarrel, I think I better leave."

Ajoke stared at him for few seconds and pulled her gaze away, turning her back at him. "I'm pregnant," her voice became soft.

Her words hit Daniel like an invincible blow. "Pregnant?" He narrowed his eyes.

"Yes." Ajoke turned to face him.

Daniel was silent for a moment. If Ajoke is saying the truth, then the worst is about to happen. He walked toward Ajoke and held her close. "Are you serious?"

She met his his gaze. "I'm two months pregnant."

Daniel was silent, pacing the room.

She stared at him. "What's the matter?"

He met her gaze and walked toward her. "I'm glad you're pregnant, but I'm not sure I'm ready," he voice was very soft.

Ajoke narrowed her eyes, surprised at his words. "Why?"

"I still have a lot to do, I'm not ready to become a father." He became serious.

"Then I will keep the pregnancy." Ajoke pulled her gaze away from him.

"You can't do that," he said. "You will have to get raid of it, at least for now."

"Get raid of what? Tell me you're joking." Her voice trembled.

"I'm serious," he held her close. "This isn't the right time."

"Is that your promise?"

"Listen, woman." He was feeling irretated. "You just to do it my own way."

"Now I got you, fine," she said. "You've shown your true color. I will do as you say, but I will let the world knows how you had been able to deceive a married woman out of her marriage, for the sake of having sex with her."

Daniel's eyes went cold.

Daniel paced the room for a long moment. There was no way he could accept the pregnancy because he had someone. Someone he loved dearly, someone that means the world to him. If he didn't want this to go the wrong way, he need to be very smart. He stared at Ajoke and went down slowly on the edge of the bed. "I want us to settle this once and for all, and I don't want us to go over this again." He said.

Ajoke stared at him silently.

"There's no way you can force me to do what I don't want. So for that reason," he met her eyes. "I will give you 15 million, to get raid of the pregnancy and forget about me."

Ajoke got up in annoyance. "No way."

Anger ripped through Daniel and he got to his feet. "20 million."

"Nonsense." Ajoke snapped with a large amount of annoyance. "To hell with you and your money. Do you realize how much damages you have done to me, you idiot. You think you can buy me with money? Just as you deceived me...."

"I never deceived you," Daniel raised his voice in annoyance. "It was you forcing yourself on me.''

"Forcing myself on you? Me?''

"Look this is over, over. Do you understand?"

"Of course I understand, but listen," she met his eyes. "I will make you regret every moment of your life."

Daniel felt his eyes narrowed in anger, but proud of his self control. He stared at her thoughtfully for few seconds. Knowing how ugly things will be if Ajoke blackmail him, and being a man of the people, he wouldn't let that happen to him.

At once, he started laughing, clapping his hands. "Wonderful.."

"You could laugh as much as you wish," her anger surged, harder to control. "but listen, you will regret it, I assure you."

He smiled. "I'm impressed."

"What do you mean?"

"If you could reject 20 million, for the sake of being with me means a lot. I mean, that shows the real you." He took a step toward her. "Now I've found a woman who love me for who I am. Now I have a wife." He smiled. "I never knew you love me this much."

Convinced. "I'm not getting you." She said slowly.

"I just tried you, to see the kind of love you have for me. I know it sound ridiculous but it's the truth."

His words surprised Ajoke. What is he talking about? Trying me? "Daniel?" Her words came out very low. "Are you playing with my feelings?"

"I'm sorry if it hurt you," he held her hands.

"Don't touch me," she took a step back.

"Came down, baby, I didn't mean all I said."

"Don't tell me that."

"Hey..." Daniel held her very close into his arms. "I swear I didn't mean it, I'm really sorry."

Whatever it was that Ajoke wanted to say, got swallowed up by a deep kiss that followed.

Femi opened his eyes to the sounds of thunder strikes as it's light brighten his room. Still on his bed, he watched as the wind played with the curtain. His room was dark, only the lights of the thunder strikes illuminated his bedroom. He made an attempt to get up, to stop the wind from gaining access through the window, but a kind of force held him down.

Finally, he set himself free, and made it to the window. He successfully closed the window, then turned to the sounds of footsteps coming from the sitting room.

He made it to the sitting room and stopped, eyes widened.

"It's nice to see you again, brother Femi."

Femi took few steps forward to be sure of who the person was. "How did you get in here?"

"Dose it matter?," Mike pulled himself up from the chair. "What matters is that I found you."

"You don't have the right to come in here without my permission," Femi said.

"I don't need your permission to get things right," Mike smiled.

"I'm not interested in whatever you called it." Femi's voice sound more confident then he felt.

"But you're already in."

"No, I'm not. I'm going to return your money, right here, right now."

Mike stared at him. "That would be unkind of you.".

"I don't care."

"It doesn't matter, we already have a bargain." Mike moved closer to him. "And nothing can change that."

"Are you forcing me against my wish?"

"Did I?" Mike met his gaze. "But you asked for it, remember? And it must be fulfilled."

"I can't do it."

"Then, you shouldn't have ask for it in the first place. You will have to come with me."

"Get away from me," Femi took a step back and fell into the chair.

"You're part of us." Mike was transforming.

Femi widened his eyes as he watched Mike trasformed into a ugly beast, with three horns on his head. The beast advanced toward him and held him by the hand, dragging him into darkness.

"NO!"

Femi jerked up from sleep, breathing hard, sweating. He stared around his bedroom slowly from one side to the other, he hurried out of bed and walked into the bathroom. He splashed water on his face then leaned his back against the wall, and fear kicked in. The dream was so real.

When he returned back to his room, his phone was ringing. He slowly walked toward the dressing table, and picked it, it was Mike calling.

He replaced the phone back on the table, then pulled his gaze toward the wall clock, it was 11:45pm.

He paced the room for many minutes. What was he going to do? He blamed himself, and hit his hand against the wall, realizing his mistakes. He must find a way out of this, but deep down in his heart, he knew it wasn't going to be easy.

He walked out of his bedroom and slowly opened the door to his son's room. He stared at the sleeping innocent boy, and gently closed the door.

He walked into the sitting room and sank into the chair. He thought about his son for a long moment. He did not want his condition to affect the innocent boy's life. He had planned to take him to his mother while he remained in the city to find a better job.

He stayed in the sitting room for many hours, trying not to fall asleep in other not have another nightmare, and the night was taking too long.

"AH!!"

A load scream echoed through the sitting room.

Femi jumped up in fear. "David!"

He ran toward his son's room. When he pushed the door opened, he met the biggest surprise of his life, David was sound asleep.

"What?" He took a step forward, staring at the little boy. What Was that? He thought. Was he dreaming? No. Femi was sure he wasn't dreaming, he heard his son screaming.

This is getting serious, he thought. He will never forgive himself if anything happened to his son. He sat on the edge of the bed and stared at his son for a very long moment.

The following morning, he was eager to return Mike's money. Maybe Mike will reason with him, he thought. After he had dressed up, he opened his wardrobe and brought out the big envelope containing the money. Femi narrowed his eyes in disbelief as he felt the weight of the envelope, it was empty.

"What?" Femi open the envelope in a hurry and widened his eyes. There was no money in it. He threw the envelope on the floor in desperate search in his wardrobe.

He searched and searched for many minutes, but he couldn't find the money. How the money disappeared he could not tell. He thought of Ajoke. No it can't be her. He had collected the keys with her the last time she came, and she had no other key to his apartment.

"No!" Femi screamed and fell to the floor. "God!"

Ajoke stared out through the window as her driver drove through a small village far away from the city. She was there to see someone she had never met before.

"Stop here," Ajoke said to her driver. "I will be back in a while."

She alighted from the car and pulled her gaze around the village to see an old man sitting at the front of a small mud house. She advanced toward him.

"Good afternoon, sir." Ajoke greeted.

The old man stared at her. "Welcome my daughter, how may I help you?"

"Please am looking for a man called Olaifa."

"Olaifa, the mighty man." The man smiled and pointed his hand toward a building at the opposite side of the road. "Follow through the corner of that house, there is a small road at the back, follow straight down, it will lead you to Olaifa's compound."

"Thank you, baba." She said, and walked toward the direction

Ajoke walked through the small part leading her into the bush and she was afraid. She walked far into bush without sighting any house, then stopped, wondering if the old man had given her the right direction. She made up her to go back to the old man or maybe ask someone else around the village. As she was about to turn, she saw two men in rags, with cutlass in their hands. Her eyes widened in fear and she attempted to run, but the men stopped her.

"Don't be afraid," one of the men said with a laugh. "We won't harm you, why are you so scared?"

Ajoke let out a breath and studied the young men. They were farmers returning to the village. "Please I was told Olaifa lives somewhere around here."

"You're almost there," one them said. "Just a few feet away from here."

"Thank you," Ajoke said with relief, walking forward, staring back every few seconds to see if the men were following her.

After few minutes she set her eyes on a small house made of clay. As she approached the place, she was surprised to see about four men and two women, chained, and she shivered. She stopped and survey the place for a while. She was afraid, wondering why those people where chained, and why would Olaifa live in the bush faraway from the village. Is this the right place or is she walking into a trap, she thought.

She stood at the same place for many seconds, on able to decide wether to go forward or to turn back. She could see no one else around the place apart from the people that were chained. As she was trying to decide, she heard a sound behind her and turned in fear, to see an old man staring at her with a frown.

The old man studied her for few seconds and sensed how scared she was. "Who are you?" He asked.

"I'm.." Ajoke cleared her throat. "I'm here to see Olaifa."

"What do you seek him for?"

"Actually, I'm from the city. I was directed here by a friend."

The man nodded. "Come with me."

"Are you the one?" She asked.

"Yes, I am." Olaifa said while Ajoke followed behind him.

As they approached the house, two young men came out from the back of the house. They tied red clothes designed with cowries around their waist. One of them approched the old man and collected his bag.

"Welcome baba," the men greeted.

"Welcome madam," they also greeted Ajoke while she forced a smile in return.

Ajoke stood still staring at those that were chained, wondering why they were in that condition.

The old man caught her gaze and smiled. "They're sick."

She stared at Olaifa. "Sick? But why chained?"

"That's the best way for now, till I will have the time to attend to them, they were brought in this morning."

"Are they mad people?" Ajoke asked.

"Exactly," Olaifa said as he opened the door to his shrine. "Come inside."

The room was a small room with no chair, only mats were spread on the floor, and walls were decorated with all sorts charms in different colors, mostly red and white. Ajoke settled on the mat opposite Olaifa then pulled her gaze around the room.

"What brought you here?" The man asked.

"I need your help."

"On what issue?"

Ajoke let out a slow breath before she spoke. "It's about my man friend."

Olaifa nodded. "What about him?"

"He's trying to play smart on me," she said. "He deceived me out of my husband's house with the promise of marrying me, but he had been acting funny lately. It's very clear he doesn't want go on with me anymore and I'm already carrying his baby."

Olaifa nodded. "What do you want me to do?"

"To tie him down." She said. "To make him love and be loyal to me for the rest of his life."

Olaifa stared at her for few seconds. "It is not a wise decision to make." He said. "Why not abort the pregnancy and return to your husband."

Ajoke shook her head. "I can't. He's not helping matters, so lazy. Besides I don't love him."

Olaifa slid his gaze to his right and picked some cowries from a small Calabash. "What's the name of your man friend?"

"Daniel."

Olaifa said some incantations and threw the cowries on the floor in front of him. He stared at it for some minutes and met Ajoke's gaze. "The man has no good plan for you. For it is better to eat chicken and live long, then to eat cow and die."

Ajoke drew in a slow breath. "I don't understand your Proverb."

"Taking a long road that lead to Joy, is better than following a short cut that lead to destruction." He leaned his head forward. "Your relationship with him will not end well."

Ajoke let the words settled in her for a long moment and slowly met his gaze. "That's why I'm here. I knows his plan and I want you to help me change that. I don't mind the cost."

The old man took a deep breath and leaned his back against the wall. "According to what I'm seeing, your husband will be more richer than your man friend in a short time to come. I can see him in mist of great wealth and power." He leaned his head forward. "It's never too late to return to him."

Ajoke shook her head in disagreement. "I don't see that coming, I can't go back to him, I love Daniel. And all I want is for you to help me make him surrender his life to me, I'm not here for advice, I want action."

"If you insist." Olaifa got to his feet. "I will be back in a minute."

Ajoke let in soft breath and pulled her gaze to wall. She could not picture herself with Femi anymore. For him to be richer than Daniel, well, maybe in his next live, she thought. Things may get better for him, but being a multi billionaire like Daniel, Ajoke don't know how that can be possible. Besides she loved Daniel, and if she could gain his love, she will have access to his wealth, gain all his properties and maybe kill him before the juju bonce back on her. She smiled.

"Take this." Olaifa said as he returned back to the room. He handed her a small white Calabash. "Put it under your bed when having sex with him. You need to do it once, then throw the calabash into a moving river."

Ajoke stared at it. "And?"

"And he will love you and be loyal for the rest of his life."

She smiled. "Thank you, baba."

CHAPTER SIX

Femi pushed through the crowd of people along the road, still wondering what had happened to Mike's money. He thought of Ajoke, but he wasn't very sure 'cause he had collected the keys with her the last time they met, and Femi was sure she had no other keys to his apartment.

This is strange, Femi thought. Will he ever be able to bear all the strange things happening around him? Or should he just accept his fate and follow the devil? He was very much aware of the riches and fame behind lucifer's offer, but feeling scared of losing his soul to the devil. He was so sad about the situation. The past days had been too scary for him, due to his nigthmares and the pears of eyes spying on him everywhere he goes. Femi wished he never met Mike, he wished he never went to him for help, blaming himself for not been patients with God. Knowing there was no way he could raise 500 thousand for Mike, he decided to see a prophet to help him fight the misery around him.

On getting to the bus-stop, he deep his hand in his pocket, and brought out his Ringing phone. "Hello."

"Baba David," Joy said from the other end of the cell phone. "Where are you?"

"I'm in Ojota, heading to Ikorodu," Femi said. "Any show?"

"Yes, I'd met the man I told you about, and he has promised to offer you a job in his organization."

"Really?" For the brief moment, Femi forgot all his worries as a wave of joy washed over him. "I'm so happy, thank you very much."

"Don't thank me yet, come over and let's go see him tomorrow morning."

"Sure I will," he said. " First thing in the morning."

"Okay then."

Femi ended the call happily, returning the phone into his pocket. At last, he was going to have a job. The thought made him smile as he waited for a BRT bus that was taking too long to arrive. The job Joy had told him about was a good one that would see him back to his feet in a couple of months. He was so exited about the news, but sad about the challenges that surrounded him. He Believed all will be fine if he locate the prophet, knowing only God could help him through his challenges and there was no other way he could fight it without God intervention.

A black car pulled to a stop in front of Femi, and his eyes got widened in disbelief. He just knew it.

The glass of the back door slowly went down to show Mike's smiling face. "Brother Femi." He said. "It has been a while."

Femi stared at him silently, feeling too scared to talk.

"Are you alright?" Mike asked. "Where are you heading, let me drop you along."

"I'm... I'm fine," he stammered. "Thank you."

Mike nodded. "I understand. We've all been through it, but we never knew we were running away from our freedom." He met his eyes. "It's a journey you're destined to take. A destiny beyond your control."

This time Femi stared into his eyes. "You knows what happened to the money, don't you?"

Mike silently stared at him for few seconds. "Even if the money is lost, it doesn't change anything. It doesn't makes you a failure."

Femi nodded and slid his gaze toward the crowd standing at the bus stop and back to Mike. "I want you to do me a favor."

"What?" Mike asked with a sweet smile.

"I don't want to walk on your part anymore."

Mike was not surprised at his words, he just smiled and stared at him. "But the part has chosen you."

"Then, it has chosen the wrong person." Femi felt more confidence as he spoke.

"I bet you don't have the source to withstand the great one who had chosen you." Mike said. "For he takes whatever he desire."

"Please," Femi pleaded. "I can't do it, I rather die then serve the devil."

Mike stared at him silently and nodded his head toward his driver to move the car.

Femi stared as the vehicle disappeared from his view and sucked in a long breath.

****

The Holy Mountain Church compound was crowded with different tribes of people, mostly young women waiting to see the prophet, and and the smell of burning incense filled the air. The white garment church was a 42 years old celestial church, seated beside a small river. At the back of the river stood a very big mountain in which many were seen climbing it, heading to the top for prayer.

Femi sat on a plastic chair very close to the wall of the church main building, staring silently as people kept going in and out of the prophet's office, wondering how powerful the prophet would be.

A young man in white garment with red robe glanced at a list of many names in his hand and pulled his gaze toward the crowd. "Mr Femi Ogunsanya." He called out.

Femi got to his feet with a sigh of relief after waiting for many hours. He slowly walked into the prophet office and closed the door gently.

The office was a large one with three big windows. The wall was painted in white and a big poster of Jesus was blasted on it behind the prophet's chair.

"You're welcome," the prophet said, "please do sit down."

"Thank you sir." Femi settled in one of the two chairs opposite him.

The prophet was in his early thirties, looking very fresh and handsome in his white garment."What do you want God to do for you?" He asked in a soft voice.

"I met a man sometime mouths ago," Femi said slowly. "It happens we had a kind of bargain when I needed money for my son's operation. And I..I'd been scared to comply."

"What kind bargain?"

"Giving my life to the devil."

The prophet leaned forward in his chair. "Giving your life to the devil?"

"Yes," Femi nodded. "The most disappointing thing of all is that the money that brought the bargain disappeared from my wardrobe, without using a penny out of it."

The prophet stared at him thoughtfully. "Did you made any blood covenant?"

"No."

"I understand all that you've said, but what I'm not getting is the disappearance of the money, are you sure it wasn't stolen?"

Femi shook his head. "I don't think so."

"What about your wife?"

It took Femi many seconds before he spoke. "I stays alone with my five years old son," he said, not waiting to mention anything about Ajoke.

The prophet nodded. "What do you want me to do!"

"There's this pears of eyes watching me over me, it's always there each time I stare through the the window at night. I do hear strange sounds at night and dreadful nightmares."

"Pears of eyes? How does it look like?"

"So strange," Femi met his gaze. "A kind of red eyes, no body."

The prophet widened his eyes.. "Eyes of Ashi, the messenger of Lucifer." He said. "You must have gone too far in your bargain."

"Eyes of Ashi?" Femi breath out the words. "How did you know?"

The prophet gave a soft smile, and pulled himself up, pacing his office."I had a similar case sometimes ago in which the spirit of God showed me the eyes of Ashi, and whoever could see those eyes, will hardly get away from it."

"That's why I'm here," Femi said. "I know only God can help me."

"But in your situation," the prophet met his eyes. "You put God in a tight corner where he won't be able to help you."

Femi narrowed his eyes in disbelief. "How do you mean?"

"God doesn't take what belong to the devil, you have made a bargain with the devil and only you will have to fight this battle, at least, to an extent before God's intervention."

Femi was more than surprised to hear a man of God saying such. He began to wonder if the prophet was a real one or not. He stared at the man and leaned forward in his chair. "I don't think I got you right, pastor. Are you saying Jesus can't deliver me from this nightmare? That I have to face it on my own?"

"I'm sorry I can't help you, Mr. Femi." The prophet got to his feet. "The power watching over you is more than what I can withstand. And in case you don't know, you're dealing with the devil himself."

Femi let out explosive breath and got to his feet. "Thank you. I will have to go."

"No problem, but I must advice you to accept your destiny."

Femi stopped and met his eyes. "To give my life to devil?"

"No, but to learn more about life. You're chosen for a reason."

Femi felt his eyes narrowed. "Chosen?"

"Yes, you're more than what you think you're are." The prophet's voice was soft. "You're unique. You have a mission to fulfill and only you have the power to save the world."

"Save the world?" Femi felt more confused. "How?"

The prophet walked toward the window, staring outside. "It is for you to find out yourself, and that means to accept the offer."

"Accept the offer?" Femi shook his head. "How can I save the world by joining force with the devil, and who told you that?"

The prophet turned to face him. "That's what the spirit of God told me."

Femi let out a soft laugh. "Thank you, pastor. I will take my leave now." He walked toward the door and pulled it opened.

"Remember, your mission is to save us."

Femi stared at him over his shoulder and closed the door behind him.
