The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has launched Leo, its artificial intelligence bot, on Apple business chat to help merchants drive their businesses and the cashless policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Speaking at the launch in Lagos, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive (GMD/CEO) of UBA, Kennedy Uzoka, said with Leo now on all IOS devices in English, the bank planned to launch in all other languages across the African countries in October, 2019.

Uzoka noted that the bank’s aspiration to ensure its customers got the best in terms of service had been a determinant of who it partnered with to develop the technology.

He said, “UBA currently operates in 20 African countries with over 18 million customers and our aspiration is to see this figure grow rapidly; and we know that serving this number of customers will require a lot of resources.

Currently, Leo is live in English, Portuguese, French and Swahili, with the capacity to do the basic things that customers expect from the bank such as transferring money, utilities bills payment, scheduling payments and airtime top-up.

Leo is also very simple to use, it is as simple as chatting with a friend the way it is done on WhatsApp or iMessage is the same way when operating Leo; and it is powered to take on banking transactions and bank inquiries.

This is long overdue at least it will ease the stress of going to the bank and having to queue unnecessarily. It's also nice to see UBA extend their chatbox to iPhone.

I thought Apple users were left out of the benefits we Android users are enjoying from Leo.

AI bot? Wow! I've seen this LEO before on their ATM when withdrawing but I felt it was just one of those messages, this AI bot idea is on a whole new level.

This is a very nice move. Customer service has taken a new turn in the banking system with this. Atleast, Customers' complaints would be attended to seamlessly.

good question, I wonder why they are launching it just for iOS

UBA be showing why they are truly the United Bank of Africa, never heard of a bank using an AI bot before, this will be very efficient in tackling the issues of their customers. I think anyone banking with UBA should have a reason to smile for this.

Fact, AI technology is fast becoming a sure aid to human labor especially when humans fail to meet up to demand. It more of an easy way out.

The days of banks having physical locations is numbered. I really feel bad for those employed in the banking sector as many will lose their jobs. CBN new cashless policies make having so many numerous physical locations pointless and now they have AI that can pretty much do what a live customer service rep does. If you are in the banking sector, hope you are acquiring other skills, growth forecast isn't looking too good right now.
