I think we have NBC and APCON for issues like this. I'll forward my complaints to them and tweet to their handles too.

Others can please suggest any regulatory agency that I can contact.

Many others would have been deceived by their promos and offers but they probably swallowed it. I do not easily swallow bitter pills and if I must, it is my civic duty to warn others so that they can be careful.
You can write to Consumers Protection Council nearest to you.

They get away with their anti-customer policies because Nigerians don't speak up or report them.

If everyone calls them out, they'll start to behave.
I think the media has a role to play here. Since there have been scandalous reports of lecturers, imams , pastors , politicians and just to mention a few, attention should be focused on service providers too. Forum of this nature can help checkmate their activities on the long run. For example creating a thread about a particular service provider on forums, blogs, youtube, twitter and facebook will do. The print media as the mentioned ones are shying from this because they benefit from the scam perpetrated by these fraudsters.

Hello Nairalanders,

I actually purchased a new DStv decoder last month. It came with one month free Compact bouquet subscription. Towards the end of the subscription earlier this week, I received a call from a DStv marketer (01 280 6877). I was asked to upgrade to a Compact Plus bouquet for N10,650 in order to get double upgrade to the Premium bouquet. Since I wanted to resubscribe anyway (I actually wanted to maintain the Compact bouquet), I decided to do the upgrade and pay the extra in order to get the premium channels.

I paid the money and went ahead with the upgrade, believing that I was going to get the premium channels. After 48 hours, I was yet to get the upgrade and I sent an email. My email was not replied. I decided to call the customercare to make my complaint. The agent that spoke with me then told me that the promo is not for me as my account was only created in September. I queried her on why the company's marketer called me for a promo that I was ineligible for without mentioning it. When I got the message about the offer, it wasn't explicitly mentioned that it was for old customers ONLY.

My anger now is that I was essentially deceived by the company and their marketers to upgrade even when I did not want to. I do not actually need a Compact Plus (it's virtually the same with the Compact, apart from new sports content which I don't need). I only upgraded because I wanted to access the premium bouquet. I expressed my dismay to the customercare agent and told her that the company had tricked me. The extra money I spent is not the issue but the thwarted expectations that I had. I promised the agent to call out DStv for this blatant misuse of advertisement.

I have also tweeted @DStv, @DStvNg, and @DStvCare on this issue and have not gotten any response. I am bringing the issue here on Nairaland so that all Dstv customers or potential customers can know of the deceptive tactics DStv uses in its advertisement. Before you deal with DStv, make sure you ask them to tell you ALL the clauses because they won't tell you. All they need is your money so they don't care about consumer rights.

I will also forward my complaint to relevant regulatory agencies as well.

This people did the same to me. I have vow never succumb to their tactical scams. They will call you that you qualify for a promo that all you need is to re-sub before the end of ur present sub. When you now sub, you will beginning to hear plenty stories. They all scam. Like them broda empty hen.

It also came as a popup message on my decoder too. The marketer only called as a followup to the message I received. It should be noted that the marketer was directly a DStv staff, not these kiosk operators.
It was not even mentioned that the promo was for old customers or anything of such. I was so happy to upgrade only to be disappointed later on. I consider what they did as fraudulent. What's most annoying is that they have chosen to ignore me completely on this matter. Funny enough, this is even my first month as a DStv customer. You can imagine the bad image they've already created.

Here's the message that came in my decoder...
You didnt read the last part that said T&C applied, terms and condition applied, it is on their own discretion to give you or not , it's not your right but privilege.

Copy of the mail that I sent to NBC and APCON.

I would advise that you download the MyDstv app to check how much was credited to your account. They will most likely not refund your cash but should credit it against your next subscription, and you'll just pay the balanc to make 6,800. Something like that happened to me.

It actually popped up on my screen bro. That's more reason I'm angry cos this is corporate 419. Why didn't the popup message tell me that I'm ineligible.

You are very correct. Its corporate scamming. The level of corruption in private sector is more than what we see in the public sector.

I had same issue and they checked my account and said I was eligible which I already knew cos I had done it b4 and it’s an old account definitely bt for sm reason they didn’t know why I wasn’t upgraded, they said they wud escalate it and resolve it bt It’s yet to be corrected.

When I call next I plan to speak to their supervisor or smtn.

Chief, they CALLED me to tell me that I should upgrade. They CALLED! I am a new customer and don't know the way they do things. Why didn't they mention it outrightly that I am not qualified since I'm a new customer?

The whole point of this exercise is not to get the premium again (I've given up on that) but to warn others who may be ignorant about their tactics.

my friend, a lot of us have encountered this one way or the other. the sad thing is i wouldn't even know where to turn to. that's is why I believe there is a lot of anger in this country. I won a particular amount online at bet9ja, I was only credited 2/3 of the money, I called like two customer care, they promised each time they will look into it. they didn't. plus I was expending my airtime each time I called. Nigeria is so so not working. in a saner country there will be bodies that handle such matter. u can even sue them. But here, u will be forced to forgo the matter. and tension only mount. mtn, glo and even banks are guilty of this shabby treatment of customer.

That's the problem. Reputable companies shouldn't randomize promos. Besides, when they called me, they mentioned my name and knew my bouquet.

Maybe you should open another thread and call to petition them on Twitter with agencies that can penalize them.... We need massive cooperation to bring their insanity to light.

Nope. Maybe you are referring to another one. They said it's a double upgrade. The implication is that compact plus would have given full premium access. Dstv really needs to work on how they disseminate information about their promos.
