Benin Republic has a population of 12 million people. But it is the worlds 5th importer of rice. In 2018, it imported rice worth US$996m.* *Benin is also world's largest importer of _used_ _cars_ and __second_ - _hand_ _clothing_ . All with a population of 12m people.* *DO YOU WONDER HOW?.........* *Don't!* *98.2% of these imports into Benin are only on transit; their final destination is _NIGERIA_ !* *Nigeria is world's largest consumer of used cars and second hand clothing, and is also Africa's largest consumer of Asian grown rice.* *The problem here is that all these imported goods attract appropriate import duty and trade tax, which are paid to the Beninoise Government while the goods are thence SMUGGLED into Nigeria WITHOUT ANY PAYMENT to the Nigerian Government and, thereby, adding zero value to the Nigerian economy!* *Sadly, THIS IS ALL DONE BY NIGERIANS!* *Granted, ECOWAS/CEDEAO charter allows for free trade between member states, but _on_ _goods_ _produced_ _in_ _member_ _countries_ , and NOT on imports from other economic blocs.* *Where foreign goods are transiting through a member country, and ending up in another member country, the ECOWAS charter stipulates that the country of transit MAY collect a token trade tax, and its Customs officials should then escort the goods to the border of the importing country and hand it over to the Customs officials of the importing country!* *But what we see in the case of Benin Republic is that it collects _CUSTOMS_ _DUTY_ plus _TRADE_ _TAX_ , and then allows the goods to pass through its hinterland for onward smuggle into Nigeria!* *This is a clear violation of ECOWAS statutes and no nation can condone such costly infraction.* *Nigeria has tolerated this nonsense from Benin for far too long and it is time to stop the malpractice if we want Nigeria's economy to grow.* *(Therefore, whoever cries foul because we have closed our borders to smugglers while we're putting our act together, IS AN ENEMY OF NIGERIA!)* *Nigeria makes up about 74% of ECOWAS population and about 71% of its economy. It is ECOWAS that needs Nigeria and not the other way round!* ANY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MEMBER COUNTRIES MUST BE BASED ON EXTANT REGULATIONS! 27 Likes 6 Shares |

Bloody hypocritical epistles... Let that damn border stay closed!!! A good degree of self-sufficiency must be attained. The same Ghana that has been mudslinging Nigeria is now talking of a moribund "free trade agreement". Oga, go sleep. Produce and eat your products. 13 Likes |

I normally take Ghana's side on issues but if they are saying Nigeria is breaking Ecowas's agreement of free entry and exit of people then - dem dey craaaaaze, mad! How many Nigerians have they frustrated with unreasonable demands? I know one igbo food seller who dey chased out of an uncompleted building, chased her out of her second place, and then finally out of a shop she rented in the park. If you know how many dollars I paid - thousands of Nigerian students pay for resident permit, you'll cry. This is how it goes. You'll first need to make a foreign resident ID card. If they've not increased it - $120. You'll then use a photocopy of it when making the resident permit. It could be up to 120 cedis now. Both are a yearly affair! 15 Likes 2 Shares |

princemillla:most of Companies in Nigeria closed and relocate to Ghana because of high price in fuel and inadequate of light supply but they always import their goods to Nigeria because of our population. The implications of it is that many Nigerian that suppose work in those companies are jobless. If they need our population , they should come and establish their company in Nigeria. 15 Likes |

Wiseandtrue: My dear u have been brainwashed. The north u are talking about is where u have never been to. Stop listening to political haters and bigots. Buhari didn't bring this hardship. Rather he's trying to rescue this nation. Have realised that no politician can claim any personal benefit from buhari policies. Look at this border issue, if it was under jona they will just open small part of the border for political friends to be bringing in products and only same political friends will be able to sell in the market. Think rationally and don't follow the ignorant band wagon 13 Likes |

Why are Nigerians seeing this as a fight or means of gaining power over other countries? Closure of border has inimical effects on Nigeria's economy and other neighbouring countries. Don't just talk for talking sake if you don't know what economics of trade is all about. 2 Likes |

helinues: While the concept of ECOWAS is welcome, I have always suggested that Nigeria need to review her membership of the association. If Nigeria is the biggest market for rice (about 70%) in the entire region, for example, what benefit is ECOWAS trade protocol to us as concerning rice as it only allows traders from other countries to cash in our market? Nigerians simply won't be importing rice to resell to 14 other countries who account for less than 50% of our local market. Another angle to look at is the fact that a larger percentage of the trade-able goods across West African borders are not made in West Africa! Why on Earth will a French body cream manufacturer ship tons of their goods to a francophone country with which they have zero duty payment, repackage the creams as "Packaged in Togo under license from La Roche Posay Paris" and get a Cotonou smuggler to run the entire shipment into Nigeria duty free via numerous illegal border posts!! It is sacrilegious for Nigeria to have tolerated this situation for this long. These are some of the reasons I support the border closure for a temporary period. We should open the border sooner than later however, we must restrict inflow across our land borders to strictly made in West Africa goods. Any other foreign made items should pass through the sea ports! Chikena!! 18 Likes 1 Share |

kolade560: You must be silly. Do you not realise by now that other neighbouring countries have been leveraging off nigerias population strenght to grow their own economies as they dump anything and everything into our markets and take the forex back to their countries? The border closure would have absolutely no inimical effect on Nigeria in the long run. This is a laudable move by Buhari and should be applauded. Nigerias population is approximately 60% of the population of the entire ecowas countries yet you still cannot see how keeping the borders open would be bad for us as a country when the other ecowas countries smuggle their goods into our country? Guy use your head to think and not your feet 12 Likes 1 Share |
