10 Ways The Upcoming PS5 Will Destroy The Next Xbox by vasaratti: 11:42am On Oct 03, 2019
Discussions around the next generation of consoles have been happening for the past couple of years or so, but it's only got to the point now where the dawning of a new era is upon us.

Microsoft have confirmed they're going to kick off the next gaming cycle at the end of 2020 with the Xbox Scarlett.

That said, it's not fair to leave it a one-sided fight, and Sony aren't resting on their laurels going into the next cycle. They've been on top before, only to come crashing down after releasing a new machine, and it's clear they're not planning on making the same mistakes with the PS5.
At least, you'd hope they're not.

Though they've been cagey on the in-production PS5 console in comparison to the competition, leaks, rumours and comments all point towards an incredibly strong showing from Sony.

To ensure Microsoft don't take the lead, a whole load of changes to the hardware, services and games will come, and that could mean the Xbox brand doesn't stand a chance.

10. PlayStation Now Can Finally Challenge Xbox Game Pass

Sony's Playstation Now service got off to a pretty rocky start. Their original plan to answer the demand for backwards compatibility was to implement the service as a way for players to stream classic titles from previous generations, but that didn't go as smoothly as they hoped.

Fans viewed Now as being over-priced and the streaming technology itself unreliable, two issues which only became more unforgivable when the Xbox One not only introduced backwards compatibility, but also the Games Pass system which let players download full games at a lower cost.

Slowly but surely, Sony have responded to the competition and improved their service massively. First, they allowed the option for fans to download PS4 games, while they've recently announced a new pricing model and a whole bunch of games that are being added.

Games Pass might still have the edge, but Playstation Now is finally a contender, and can only get better going into the next gen.

#9: It Will Revolutionise Game Audio

Okay, wait right there - don't you dare skip onto the next number without reading this first. I know the idea of the PS5 hanging its hat on improved audio doesn't sound all that exciting, but it's probably the space where the new consoles can radically up their game.

In an interview with Wired , architect for the next Playstation, Mark Cerny, kept talking about how his team is looking to revolutionise gaming audio for the next generation. He rightly points out that there was barely any change on the audio front from the PS3 to the PS4, but there's so much scope to alter the how players think about sounds in games

Currently, it's something we don't think about and simply take for granted, but cutting-edge releases like Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice have proven just how integral great sound design can be in crafting a unique story.

Sony can capitalise on this area, and give fans a radical change they didn't know they needed.

#8; PlayStation Assistant Will Be A Better Kinetic

The most recent patent filed by Sony might be the most interesting yet, as it could change the game when it comes to how players actually control their consoles.

Both the PS4 and the Xbox One enjoy voice commands at the moment (with that feature pretty much being the one redeeming part of the Kinect 2.0), but the Playstation Assistant would be an advanced form of that, essentially Sony's answer to Alexa.
Voice commands might be seen as kind of pointless when you can use a controller to accomplish the same actions just as fast, but this patent actually suggests some pretty intriguing in-game possibilities.

As someone who uses a lot of guides to go trophy hunting - and has experienced the frustration that comes from flicking between information on a phone and the action in the game - the addition of being able to call up a walkthrough on the same screen is a dream come true.

That's on top of the increased accessibility options that would come with the technology as well, overall increasing the PS5's ease of use.

It sounds like one of those features like rest mode, where it seems small, but once you have it you couldn't imagine a time where you didn't use it all the time.

#7: VR Gaming Games Comes Into His Own

Even though I've championed it since it first launched, the PSVR has only really come into its own over the past year or so. Before then it was home to some great experiences, but a lot of even the big name releases weren't what the general public viewed as "proper games" - but now all that has changed.

Between the likes of Blood and Truth, Astro Bot, Moss, Firewall: Zero Hour, No Man's Sky and Resident Evil 7, some of the best games of the entire generation can be found on Sony's VR system, and it's clear that they're committing even more to producing high-quality titles for the PS5.

Even better, several leaks have suggested that there'll be an improved headset as well but, importantly, it won't be required to play the new games. That's essential to not burn the players who have already invested, while providing even more incentive for new fans to give the tech a chance.

#6: An Awesome Launch Lineup

Now, the launch lineup for both the Xbox Scarlett and PS5 is shrouded in mystery, but it's Sony who's clearly gearing up to have the better selection of must-play titles to coincide with the release of their next console.

For one, they've purposefully held back on announcing anything new for over a year now. Refusing to show up at major trade shows like E3 and show off what they have in development, they've instead doubled down on the few remaining PS4 exclusives already announced.

Consequently, it doesn't take a genius to come to the conclusion that they're purposefully keeping their cards close to their chest in order to have a bunch of big hitters ready for the next console launch.

It's not all speculation either, as the leaks so far back this up. Sucker Punch's anticipated Ghost of Tsushima is rumoured to be a major exclusive come launch day, while sequels like Horizon Zero Dawn 2, a new entry into the Killzone franchise and remasters of cult classics like Demon's Souls are also rumoured.

That would already put it lightyears ahead of the PS4's launch, and also whatever the next Xbox has to offer.

#5: Remote Play Will Be Huge

when it launched back in 2017. Instead of successfully balancing their handheld machines with their dedicated consoles, they decided to simply smash the two together.

Sony attempted something similar over the course of the PS4's life, only it was nowhere near as elegant. They transformed the Vita into a remote play device that allowed for gaming on the go, but they've looked to expand that concept massively with the likes of Playstation TV and their cloud streaming infrastructure.

It's been a rough transition, but now the structures are in place to make remote play as easy and accessible as possible on PS5, and that's without even mentioning the new handheld that was patented which could make this even better...

#4: PS5 Pro Will Be Available At Launch

Both Sony and Microsoft's mid-gen console refreshes have been mixed bags. Though they extended the life of the generation and allowed devs to give players better games that exceeded the capabilities of the underpowered original machines, they weren't totally utilised to their fullest extent.

They came too late in the console cycle, and devs couldn't properly harness their power without alienating the majority of fans who stuck with the base machines. There's no point having the 'world's most powerful console' if 90% of your games don't take advantage of it.

Instead of going back to the idea of one regular console for an entire generation though, recent leaks have suggested that both the Pro and the base PS5 will be available for purchase at launch.

This is genius for a couple reasons. For one, it ensures that the company won't have to limit their console's capabilities to keep the price down, and two, it should mean that developers can really take advantage of the added horsepower.

Extra options are always good, and this approach should mean the PS5 remains affordable and accessible without falling behind when it comes to specs.

#3: Sony Are Acquiring New Studios And Working On Some Secret Projects

Microsoft have made some pretty promising steps over the past year to make sure their exclusives are as good as they can be for the next generation. After some big name acquisitions, their first-party team of developers can now rival anything Sony has to offer, and should lead to a variety of big name Xbox Scarlett games dropping in the console's first couple of years.

Sony has been pretty content to let their already excellent first-party studios continue to shine, but they're now adding even more to the lineup. The company recently bought Insomniac Games and committed to building on the Spider-Man and Ratchet and Clank franchises, and rumours suggest it could be the first of many coming acquisitions.

This is on top of the new studios they've internally built as well. For instance, we know there's a secret studio made up of Naughty Dog and Rockstar devs that's working on a mystery project, and it points to plenty of surprises outside of the big games we already know are coming.

Speaking of...

#2: The Exclusive Line Up Is Amazing And Diverse

Even though not all of the exclusives for the next Playstation have been revealed, it doesn't take a genius to know what Sony is working on. The company has spent the entirety of this generation building themselves up as the pinnacle of big-budget AAA games, launching new franchises like Horizon Zero Dawn and breathing new life into old ones such as God of War.

Fans can expect to see new entries in both of those franchises at some point, alongside Spider-Man 2, Gran Turismo 7 and Ghost of Tsushima.

That lineup alone is enough to guarantee a bevy of must-play experiences on the PS5, but they're just the tip of the iceberg. There's still the secret projects to come, rumoured sequels to older franchises, and the second-party surprises that Sony always like to roll out.

Microsoft will no doubt have an improved exclusive library for the next Xbox, but Sony have spent over five years putting in the groundwork on that front, and are in a better position to hit the ground running once then PS5 drops.

#1: Backwards Compatibility With Every PlayStation Generation

Microsoft nabbed themselves a major win by adding backwards compatibility as a feature for the Xbox One. Suddenly, Sony's smattering of old PS2 games simply didn't cut it, and they've essentially had to take the L for the rest of the generation.

Not wanting to let Microsoft carry on with this ace up their sleeves, they've filed a bunch of patents across 2018 and 2019 that all point to them transforming the PS5 into something of a legacy console. It's already been confirmed that the next machine will be at least backwards compatible with the PS4, and these filings suggest that PS1, 2 and 3 games will also be playable.

How that would impact the relevancy of PS Now is yet to be seen, but a new console that doesn't provide an accessible way to play a library of legacy games - especially a library bursting with titles as good as Sony's - would already feel dated.

Fortunately, Sony seem keen on avoiding this mistake as much as possible.

what you have just mentioned aren't good reason PlayStation and Sony will be the best let me explain
#10 PlayStation now: OK PS now is getting better and by the time next gen reach it will might be awsome "fingers crossed" and I will like to see competition between both game pass and PS now because it will give us great games on this services "also I don't think PS now allow you to download I don't know tell me if people can do that now"
#9 game audio: I should have skipped because that point don't make sense because I always expect game audio to improve over generation on all platform so yeah unless if Microsoft f*ck that up but that is highly unlikely
#8 PlayStation Assistant: yes Microsoft f*cked up with kinect but we still have cortana and now she is on mobile so yeah? I think.
#7 VR: if Microsoft does not explore this part of gaming then they are missing out but I do expect them to do something on VR by next gen
#6 New game lineups: Xbox does have halo coming next gen and I do expect first party games coming too with all those studios they have been buying if not there will be problem
#5 Remote play: Xbox had remote play since on PC and now they have xcloud coming which will be huge I hope
#4 ps5 pro available at lunch: OK I don't have problem with that
#3 Sony are acquiring new studios and working on secret project: in case you don't know Microsoft have been acquiring studios and not any studios amazing studios which have made great games and I don't think they bought them just for look
#2 amazing exclusive lineup: yes PlayStation have amazing lineup but with all this new studios Microsoft have acquired there is bound to be great lineups coming to the Xbox
#1 backwards compatibility: of course PlayStation will I adopt this Xbox too will adopt this as well so
to be honest I want both console to be great next gen so as we can have great content coming from both side which will benefit us all so that what we should be thinking as gamers also if don't like this OK I don't care
