Wanted Nnamdi Kanu vows to cause trouble for Nigeria after court orders his arrest

The wanted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has threatened to cause problems for Nigeria following the recent decision of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to issue a bench warrant to arrest him.

Kanu said the order is an attempt by the Federal Government to limit him from traveling across the world to fight for the liberation of Biafra, a proposed nation of southeastern states that he wants to break away from Nigeria.

Kanu said any attempt to enforce the order will provoke him to activate a 'legal assault against Nigeria', arguing that the charges against him are trumped up.

In a statement obtained by Punch, he said, "I am a Biafran that holds a British citizenship. Nigerian law courts and their judges are of no consequence to me. I am not a Nigerian citizen; therefore, your bail revocation is completely meaningless to me. My devotion to the absolute and puritanical pursuit of the total restoration of the sovereignty of the Republic of Biafra is unwavering.

Justice Binta Nyako issued the arrest order against Kanu on Thursday, March 28, 2019 after the court determined that he flouted his bail conditions.

Kanu had been arrested by the Department of State Security (DSS) in 2015 and charged with treasonable felony, inciting violence and hate speech, among other charges, for his secessionist activities.

He spent two years in custody until he was granted bail on health grounds in April 2017.

In the ensuing months, he constantly violated his bail conditions and eventually disappeared in September 2017 after a week of high-profile clashes between his group and the Nigerian Army. IPOB was also designated a terrorist organisation that same month by the Federal Government and had its activities proscribed.

Even though the group had claimed that Kanu disappeared because he was secretly apprehended by the Army, he was pictured 13 months later later praying at the Wailing Wall of Jerusalem, Israel, on October 19, 2018.

This foolish talk from someone who does not understand the rule of law. It doesnt matter how many bail conditions Kanu broke, it is for the courts to decide if he should be arrested or not, not the government or any of the armed forces. Courts give bail and only the courts have the power to order arrest based on breaking bail conditions. When the government went after Kanu when the courts had not yet revoked his bail, it was not only an illegal act, it was a breach of Kanu's fundamental human rights.

And then you say he made incendiary speeches? Is that against the law? Doesnt he have freedom of speech any more? If the government feels that Kanu has broken the law law through his utterances, they should arrest and charge him to court. How do you send Soldiers after someone just for "talking"? Are we in Stalins Russia or are we in a democratic country? An unarmed man "talked", you roll out Soldiers to go after him? That is pure madness.

Olodo, for your information, the government has the right to use its armed forces to move against what Kanu wass doing i.e open agitation for secession that is against the provision of the Nigerian constitution. The FG was 100% within its right to send in the Army to curb the menace Kanu and IPOB were constituting back then.

Go and read official and reputable reports, not rag-tag Biafra news sources, to note that the FG specifically stated that "security concerns" led to the siege on Kanu's home. How you know kids is that when they have nothing to say, they resort to name calling. You dont even know that the law allows people to campaign for separation. The law allows us all freedom of expression and protest. In addition, Nigeria is a signatory to Article 1 of the UN charter, and article 20 of the AU charter. These are international laws that allows any group of people the right to campaign or agitate for a separate country. What the law does not allow is to declare a separate country "by force", which Kanu has never done, he wants referendum. So why is your government sending Soldiers against those agitating for a separate country when they are allowed to do so under the law? How exactly were Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB a menace? Were they armed? Did they kill anyone? Did they touch anybody? Were they destroying lives and property? Or is just that they "talked"?




Security concerns that was not backed by any evidence? That mean that any government can order the military to go and get anyone in the name of "security concerns" even there is no evidence to that effect. How did IPOB or Nnamdi constitute security concern when they were neither armed nor violent? Oh yeah! They they "talked". Talking is the security concern.

There is nothing called 'hate speech' in the constitution of Nigeria. If anyone has said anything that breaches the constitution, it is the job of the police to arrest and charge to court. It is not the job of the military to go after people for talking
