Legendary Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas has weighed in with his own words regarding who should win the prestigious balloon d'Or 2019 award. The three strongest contenders are Virgil Van Djik, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Despite having a good relationship with his former teammate at the Bernabeu, Casillas feels it wouldn't be 'logical' for Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Ballon d’Or this time.

According to him, 'Van Dijk was the best player in UEFA and Messi was the best for FIFA,' so it makes no sense for Ronaldo to be the best in the world.

He wrote on Twitter:

“Van Dijk was the best player in UEFA. Messi was the best for FIFA. Imagine Cristiano winning the Golden Ball.

"It seems to me that the criteria we follow in football to give prizes are not very logical, right? Friday's reflection."

Virgil van Dijk appears to be the favourite to win the award after helping the Liverpool to an unbelievable Champions League triumph.

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi appears to be second in the pecking order having achieved a remarkable feat of 51 goals and 22 assists in 50 matches in all competitions, making him the highest in Europe. Sincerely speaking, he would have been the undisputed winner had he won the Champions League.

He also helped the Catalan giants win the title in La Liga, reach the final of the Copa del Rey and the semi-finals of the Champions League, while with Argentina he finished third at the Copa America.

As for Ronaldo, he scored 28 goals and laid on 10 assists in 43 games for Juventus, who won their eighth consecutive Serie A title. He also helped Portugal win the inaugural UEFA Nations League.
