What Happens When A Believer “Dies In Sin”. A Biblical Exposition Of What Sin Really Is And What Jesus Did To It

A Bible Study by Prince Gabriel Okocha

One of the most common question I get asked after teaching on the wonderful gift of Salvation given to us in Christ is, “What if the believer dies in sin?”

The other formats the question usually comes in includes, “what will happen to a Christian who died in sin?”, “where will a Christian who died in sin go to?” Oftentimes, they usually expect me to say “Hell”.

While I am aware some people ask these questions with the intent of trapping you into saying something they will cherry-pick and use against you, I am also aware some do so out of the sincerity of heart, to learn the truth of God’s word. However, the question wouldn’t have even been an issue in the first place if we had taken some time to study what the Bible has to say concerning sin.

What does the Bible call sin?

There are two of them. Unfortunately, the first is where most people stop at. I implore you to not learn about the first alone but also pay enough attention to the second.

The first thing the Bible refers to as sin is wrongdoing or wrong acts. That is not rocket science. Nearly everyone knows this. The wrong acts here includes lying, cheating, stealing, idol worship, fornication etc. But that is not all there is to sin. As a matter of fact, these wrongdoings are better referred to as sins.

The second thing the Bible calls sin which is actually the main thing the sacrifice of Jesus dealt with on the cross, is the evil “nature” passed onto every man from Adam. This nature is the main thing that separated us from God, or you can say “killed us spiritually” since spiritual death is simply a separation from God. It qualified every man a sinner even without doing anything evil.

Rom 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned

The sin nature is what produces the sins (the wrong acts) we see present in the world. As long as a man has not received or accepted the sacrifice of Jesus for himself personally, this nature is still very much active in him. It can drive him to do anything, all manner of evil, without remorse. It is just his nature.

Apostle Paul explains it better like this;

Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Eph 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Did you notice in that verse 3 how he referred to us before encountering Christ as the Children of wrath by nature? He took time to explain that the reason we committed all manner of sins as in wrong acts, was because we had the nature of sin within us. As long as that nature was within us, we could do anything, anytime, anywhere.

Without minding what anyone would say or do.
In his prophetic explanation of the reason for Christ’s coming, John the Baptists tells us clearly “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1 :29)

What sin was he talking about? Lying, stealing or fornication? Not exactly.
He was referring to the root of sins which is sin itself, i.e the nature.

So how will Jesus take away that sin seeing that He was not born into it like every other man? How will take it away if he never had it in the first place?

On the cross Jesus willingly had His nature of righteousness stripped from Him and took upon Himself that sin nature and became “sin” or a “sinner” like every other man. Not by evil actions but by nature.

2Co 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

In His death, he died bearing that sin nature in Himself for all who would believe and come to God through Him. He died and was buried with it. But in His resurrection, He resurrected a new man, with a new nature- the nature of righteousness.

This new nature of righteousness is automatically reproduced in all who receives it by Faith in His death, burial and resurrection for them. By receiving it through faith, they become qualified to be called Righteous men, even without doing any good thing at the moment. They become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.

2Co 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

So, the major thing the Bible refers to as sin in the Bible is the nature of sin. That is what makes a man a sinner before God. As long as you don’t have this nature any more through faith in the sacrifice of Jesus, you are not a sinner anymore. You may still do some bad stuffs occasionally, but that doesn’t make you a sinner again in God’s eyes.

In the same way, you can do all the good things in the world, help the poor, pray etc as many times as you lie. As long as you have not accepted the sacrifice of Jesus for yourself, you are not a righteous man. You are a sinner in God’s eyes. If you die that way, you will perish in Hell.

So what will happen to a Christian who dies in sin (nature)?

First the Christian can never die in that state seeing that His sin nature has been taken away by Jesus according John 1:29. He has a new nature in him which is the nature of righteousness. Also if he dies committing a sin (wrongdoing), apostle John tells us his fate.

1Jn 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

1Jn 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

That scripture is not only valid when the Christian is alive, it is valid as long as the word of God is valid. That is forever, and ever , and ever! When the Christian is present on this earth or gone.
That is what the Bible teaches. Not that he will end up in Hell even after being born again in the image of God. There is no single scripture in the Bible that supports that notion that if a sinful believer dies, he will end up in hell. If that were to be the case then everyone will end up there since there are over 613 sins that we can consciously or unconsciously commit before dying. Saying we didn’t do any of it intentionally is not a valid excuse before God. Claiming ignorance does not also work with Him.

Our only hope is His words, His sacrifice and forgiveness. At all times.
Should we then take that as a license to go on sin rampage? God forbid! Apostle Paul tells us:

Col 3:8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

Col 3:9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

Col 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him

He says “put off” all forms of wrongdoings. That is, stop them.
Why? Because you no longer have the “old man” which is the nature of sin in you. You now have the “new man” which is created in the image of God. In righteousness and true holiness.

So, for the man in Christ, the nature of sin has been dealt with once and for all, and his entire wrongdoings has been completely forgiven. This is the Gospel. This is what the Bible teaches.
I hope this blesses you! Glory to God

Ezekiel 18:24
But when the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does (sinners as mentioned by the first presenter), shall he live? All his righteousness that he has done shall not be remembered: in his trespass that he has trespassed, and in his sin that he has sinned, in them shall he die.
I hope every one will be able to answer the question by he or her self from above verse Ezekiel 18:24.
No unclean ( not clean inning by water or oil or sand etc) shall enter heaven as we were told in Revelation 21:27 (And there shall in no wise enter into it (it here means heaven) any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.)
so a believer that die in sin is not in Christ ( may God help us) and he that is not in Christ can not enter heaven and we have two places after this life, heaven and hell.
Note: No prayer after death. either by the individual or those that are life prayed on behalf of the dead. the season of the one that is dead is over. sorry for the presenter is trying to dodge (not saying some fact).

Daejoyoung:

Say you want to preach to an unbeliever, and he asks you how does the death of jesus make me righteous? what would be your answer?
The death of Jesus Christ put an end to the first human creation headed by Adam.

Implications:

The path is clear for anyone who believes in Christ to know, approach, and relate to God.

Also, the believer can recognize, reject, and resist ungodliness which hitherto could not be resisted.

John 6:28-29 says, "Then they said unto Him, 'What shall we do that we may work the works of God?' Jesus answered and said unto them, 'This is the work of God, that you believe on Him whom He sent.' "
The gospel of the kingdom of God is also summarized into John 3:16 because there is no way you get into the kingdom of God without eternal Life which is a free gift of God according to John 3:16.
Jesus taught those who were under the law, today if you are really saved and have the Spirit of Christ within you, you'll find that you forgive people no matter how angry you were. I personally have experienced this many times. I've found myself praying for safety and blessing for those who hate me most.
The only commandment Christ gave us when He was going is the commandment of love (John13:34-35, John 15:12-17, 1 Corinthians chapter 13, etc).
As the op has rightly pointed out, we live in righteousness by the nature and Spirit of God within us as pointed out in Romans 8.
lf you believe in him, you commit yourself to live by his teachings. That is what it means to believe in him.

Why do you call me lord, lord and not do what l say?

l have nothing against John 3v16, and there is nothing in john 3v16 that contradicts what l'm saying. Like you rightly said the gospel of the kingdom is included in John 3v16 but john 3v16 itself is not the summary of the gospel like many Christians believe today, rather you have to take all 4 gospels as a whole package.

The ability to forgive your enemies is in every one who wants to, and the spirit of christ is the power behind the teachings of christ which are the universal laws of God inbuilt in every one and accessible to anyone who hungers and thirst after righteousness.

Many people antagonizing the op does not understand his write up

When you become born again by accepting Jesus, the nature of God that makes you righteous comes into you. But the flesh contends with this nature, Galatians 5:16
So the flesh must be subdued by walking in the Spirit

How does believing in a person's death, burial and resurrection give you righteousness? that's the question you are not answering.
Because that's the foolish thing God did, spoke about his son coming and said that's his requirement nothing more believe in his son and you will have life, kinda silly when you think of it logically but since God said that's just what he wants that it's more than enough for him, fine by me

You people buying this idea should go and repent. If you are in Christ there is no room for any SIN whatsoever. If you do you are down going to HELL. No two ways to that. What the Bible and teaching of Christ is telling us is you should live the life HE lived. Do not in any way or any circumstance commit any : lie, cheat, fornicate, kill etc.

What the op explained is the true definition of the Gospel of Jesus. Salvation and righteousness can only come after believing in the Gospel of Jesus. It will never come by works because no man has ever done it that way including Abraham and all the prophets. Who are you to earn righteousness by works?

Romans 4: (King James Version)
1. What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?

2. For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.

3. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

What did Abraham believe?. He believed a message that symbolises the message of the Gospel of Christ that we preach today. That is why we are called the sons of Abraham. The criteria used for Abraham to earn righteousness is what we enjoy in Christ today.

Genesis 15:
5. And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
6. And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

Righteousness can never come by works.
Galatian 2:
[16] Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

[21] I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

Romans 3:
[21] But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets

22] Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

28] Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Romans 10:
[4] For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

]6] But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from abovesmiley

Romans 10:10
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Romans 4:
[5] But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

[6] Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

[7] Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

[8] Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

Philippians 3:9
And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

I pray that the eyes of your understanding will be enlightened and believe the true gospel of Jesus in the undiluted form.

Jesus is lord...... Remain blessed!!!!

That is a divine spiritual exercise that took place on Gods order, so you can't see it. Just believe by faith that its an automatic thing that has been programmed by the Hevenlies to occur at the death of Jesus or you want to search out how it works? This not science man. It is not like electric bulb where you can explain the science behind how light gets generated to the bulb to lit it up. This is totally the opposite of science and that is why scientists too are against or dont believe so many things about God, His existence and the things he created. Same ish you're having as you are coming at it with a scientific approach.

Relax your mind and just believe.

Apostle Paul explains it better like this;

Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Col 3:9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

Im really blessed by this piece.
A lot of Christians need to see this piece to change their mindset cos most are still living in bondage and have not started walking in the liberty where Christ has made us free.

Imagin some Christians will say, (addressing fellow Christians) if you die while doing the wrong thing by mistake ah....youll not make heaven... And I begin to wonder if what Jesus did on the Cross of Calvary is not total or absolute which forced me to ask a pastor and Sunday school teacher, Sir, is salvation not absolute and they said it is. So I said, then what's all this talk about Christians not making heaven? And they were like... sister, errmm because of our time, "errrmm..its too deep, its not something we can discuss now. "its time for service.".... I just smiled.. Well I've always known the truth and it has made me free. Plus this article has further strengthened my belief.

I pray that God opens our eyes of understanding to better serve and Worship him.

Praise God.

Relax your mind and just believe.
l don't think that's how it works, you can't just believe what you don't understand except you don't truly believe it. The reason l don't believe it is that l don't think that's the correct understanding of the bible. The bible does not say because jesus died therefore you automatically have the righteous nature and all you have to do is just believe this and accept this sacrifice. l understand you get this mostly from your reading of the epistles of paul, but l don't think even paul means this. The cross is an inspiration for us to take up our own cross and follow jesus to the father, l would give you a song that clearly brings out what the cross means in my view and in my understanding of the new testament.

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

O the Wonderful cross,
bids me come and die,
that l may find to truly live.

See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Jesus was God's sacrificial lamb which took away the sins of the world.

During the days of the old covenant, if someone sinned they were to sacrifice an animal, usually a lamb, goat or bull, and this sacrifice would cover their sin and secure God's forgiveness for a while, but when they sinned again, they would have to appease God's wrath by carrying out another sacrifice. Read Hebrews 9-11.

So, when Jesus hung on the cross as God's own sacrificial lamb for the sins of the entire world, He took upon God's judgment for sin and made salvation available to the whole world. His sacrifice doesn't just cover sins like the former covenant, but it takes sins away... All records of it for all who receive it.

Salvation entails righteousness, justification, forgiveness, health, peace with God, etc.

Jesus said, and all over the new testament it is reiterated that the only way to receive anything from God is by believing. He said that if anyone believes in Him, he is not condemned. John 3.

So, to answer your question, the death of Jesus doesn't make you righteous, but believing in the Gospel of Jesus (that He is the son of God, was crucified for your sins, and was resurrected to newline) is what makes you righteous in God's eyes. Romans 3. Romans 10.

The only righteousness that counts to God is His own Righteousness, the Righteousness of faith, that is, His Righteousness which is imputed to all who believe in Him. Romans 10.

Righteousness is simply being made right with God or being at peace with Him.

Satisfied?

i am still yet to understand how the death of Jesus can actually be called a sacrifice when he knew he was going to resurrect after three days. to my understanding sacrificing means doing away with something valuable often with no expectation of getting it back

what an interesting write up...reading thru the comments i have seen how justice has been done by others particularly Ochibuogu5(a master stroke ) in responding to your assertions....anybody who die in sin cannot inherit the kingdom of God take it or leave it...once saved always saved is not a true gospel....he that committed sin is of the devil...a lot of Christians are in hell today because of such half baked gospel, there is no repentance in the grave so if a believer die in sin where will they repent again to inherit the kingdom of God?...it is thoughts like this that gave birth to false doctrines like purgatory, no hell etc...please if you are reading this and sincerely want to make heaven endeavor to live a holy life confess and forsake all sins known and unknown, avoid willful sin and keep company of heavenly conscious friends...don't delude urself that there is a second chance after here, trust me once ur eyes are closed in death its the beginning of eternity either in heaven or hell...the choice is yours!

Who can search out the deep secret things of God? You can't understand the ways of God because he works in mysterious ways. If you try to search out the ways of God with your physical senses, youll get confused and lost.

Yours is to believe, that is your part in the salvation process. Its based on your believe (whether you understand how it works or not) that you'll actually be saved otherwise you might just be operating outside Grace.

Apostle Paul explains it better like this;

Eph 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

You have a little understanding of His Sacrifice. Back then people sacrificed lambs and goats to be made right with God, for Him to forgive their sins. Those animals were mortal, and once they died their sacrifice only has power until the person sins again. They could only cover a specific number of people at a time.

But Jesus, being God, was sacrificed for the sins of the whole world. He is immortal, and so His Sacrifice covers more people and is everlasting unlike the former.

So, because of Jesus's sacrifice, people are made right with God forever, forgiven of their sins continuously, and declared rrighteous and justified by Him.

By Love God made all those things available, and it an be yours if you receive it by faith.
