Claims That Nigerian Died In Iran Plane Crash Are False - Fact Check by Ishilove: 6:08pm On Jan 14, 2020
In this age of social media, it is very easy to give into the temptation of spreading news without proper checks, especially when they are being disseminated by supposedly reputable media outlets. However, thankfully there are still some who take the time out for fact checks.

Several media publications last week claimed that a Nigerian Dauda Onoruoiza was one of the victims of the Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737 plane that crashed in Tehran on Wednesday, killing all 176 onboard.

The news was published by reputed media outlets in Nigeria including, The Punch, ThisDayLive, Legit and several other websites. A Google search of the name “Dauda Onoruoiza” showed, at least, 10-page results.

According to all of these sources, Onoruoiza, a Kogi State-born, until his death worked with Boeing on a three-month training in Ukraine and was attached to the Boeing 737-800 to fly with and study the mechanical noise of the aircraft. It was reported that Onoruoiza was meant to report back to the company because the said plane was scheduled for maintenance on Monday, January 13, 2020, in Ukraine.

Majority of the publications carried a picture of the supposed dead Nigerian.

Many threads were created on Nairaland on this matter and one even managed to grace the frontpage briefly before it was yanked off by the supermoderator. https://www.nairaland.com/5626777/nigerian-dauda-onoruoiza-among-victims

Contd:

But was a Nigerian, Dauda Onoruoiza, on-board?

According to the official passengers and crew members manifests, released by the Ukraine International Airlines and the Iranian Civil Aviation Authority on Wednesday, the name Dauda Onoruoiza is conspicuously missing and a close look at all of the 176 names listed on both releases, show that none of the names is of Nigerian origin.

According to a tweet from Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko, it said the victims include 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, four Afghans, three Germans and three British nationals.

Yevhenii Dykhne, president of Ukraine International Airlines, said that most of the dead passengers were in transit to Ukraine to connect to further flights.

Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister, said 138 of the passengers on the flight were going to fly on to Canada, and that their connecting flight arrived in Toronto with many seats empty.

Boeing, which the publications claimed the ‘dead’ Nigerian worked for acknowledged the crash and sympathised with the families of those that died. It, however, never claimed its staff was on board the ill-fated plane.

When this news broke I searched for sources, but it seems all the media outlets reporting quoting one another without an actual official confirmation. This, folks, is CRAPPY journalism.

It is utterly disgraceful that media outlets like Punch and ThisDay will feature unverified news like the myriad of unprofessional bloggers that crowd cyberspace. Absolutely shameful. angry

I just observed that almost all the names there are Muslim and Iranian names.
if any Nigerian was in that plane then we would have no other option than to declare war with the useless Iran, deploy our able gallant soldiers to Iran under the leadership of the able Brigadier General Tukur Buratai the Slayer or Boko Haram and IPOB terrorists.
We'd have dealt so hard with Iran to show that we Nigerians are the giant of Africa.

What?
To what end is the fake news of the Nigerian for.

A big shame on Punch Newspaper.
They have been reduced to an online outlet like Yabaleft.com.

How the mighty have fallen!

We need a bill in our darling nation to put all these fake news carrier into check.

This is what happens when reputable media outlets rely on tweets from Dauda Mumuni tweeting from a cheap China phone with free data as their source... journalists now lift unconfirmed reports from social media without fact finding.

Copy and paste Lazy reporters.

I don't even bother buying newspapers these days, I am more current than all of them, just imagine buying a newspaper in the morning to read what you already read on your phone last night.
