Wrap materials in preparation for shipment

Types of Forklifts

As a forklift operator, you may work on any of the following types of forklifts:

Counterbalance
Hand pallet trucks
Telescopic handlers
Side loading trucks
Reach trucks

Hours per Week

Typical full-time hours can range between 35 hours and 42 hours per week. Shift work is common for forklift operators, and overtime is often available.

Working Environment

As a forklift operator, you will generally work inside, in a warehouse or factory environment, or outside, in an airport, port, or yard.

Salary

Depending on experience, salary is usually within the $15 – $20 per hour range.

Skills, Abilities, and Interests

The best forklift operators have:

A mature and responsible approach to work
Ability to work efficiently and effectively
Good hand-eye coordination
The ability to judge heights and distances, and assess weight
Knowledge and understanding of health and safety issues
