The Medical and Dental Consultant’s Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), says its members will pull out from all Teaching Hospitals in the country if the National University Commission (NUC), fails to withdraw the circular issued to Nigerian Universities that all medical doctors lecturing in the universities and medical colleges must possess PhD certificates before they would be allowed to lecture, VAM News has gathered. The NUC had on December 24, last year issued a circular directing all University Vice Chancellors and Registrars, National Postgraduate Medical College not to allow doctors who were not PhD holders to lecture in the universities, a decision that was vehemently faulted by the doctors. In their resolve to take a final stand on the NUC’s decision, the association through its National President, Prof. Kenneth Ozoilo said the group had on January 31, issued 24-day ultimatum for the NUC to withdraw its earlier decision, else it will ask its members to stay away from all hospitals across the country, citing that the ultimatum is expiring in the next 10 days. Ozoilo, a consultant at Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), made the disclosure on Friday during a press conference held in Jos, the Plateau State Capital. According to the group, PhD certificate though relevant but “doesn’t add value to any kind of treatment” adding that for a PhD holder to lecture efficiently, they have to be trained and get practical experience from the field. MDCAN which described the NUC’s decision as punitive and acting in error, noted however that having fellowship acquired through residency was more vigorous which could be equated with PhD certificate, explaining that “residency training is purposeful while PhD is cosmetics.” READ MORE below: https://www.voiceairmedia.com/2020/02/doctors-to-begin-nationwide-strike-over.html

I no dey too understand this medical thingy sef. It takes 6 years of residency to become a consultant, yet it is not equivalent to PhD?  And if NUC now insists a lecturer in a university teaching hospital must hold Phd, that means the lecturers must be around 50 years and above. |

Simplyleo: That has been the argument for several years now,. complicated by the fact.that a medical doctor can do a PhD., and whether fellowship is lesser And also complicated by the fact that writing a dissertation is part of the requirements for being a consultant. 1 Like 1 Share |

Though, their argument is logical but not technical enough to go on strike. Nevertheless, NUC should give them more time to be able to attain the necessary PhD. You can not equate your residency to PhD, if they are really equal, those professors in the medical field wouldn't have gone for it. Besides, we are talking about academic in general and that includes qualifications and not profession only. 1 Like |

Anwons:you're oblivious about medical field. professors that take clinical students don't need to have Ph.Ds. Residency is what they do and they become profs some years after.. Medicine is different from other professions. Ph.Ds don't have any relevance in clinical medicine... Medicine is practical not theory. |

MrEgghead: MrEgghead: Medicine & other fields have evolved tremendously over the years through cutting-edge research! PhD is founded in deep research that adds novelty to existing body of knowledge. One of the reasons the field of medicine isn't really advancing much in Nigeria is due to the paucity of research. Those who lecture medicine only recycle old notes to generations of students. No research, no new knowledge, no publications with ground breaking knowledge. This lack lustre approach can not advance the field of medicine or any field for that matter. A PhD should be made compulsory! Not only for medics in universities but for ALL lecturers. The residency programme is not equivalent to a PhD. That argument won't fly! A PhD demonstrates rigor and novelty. There's a difference between a dissertation and a thesis. Read residency dissertations and a well-written thesis. The difference is clear! If it were same, medics in advanced countries won't go back for PhD after MD. Pick up most of the medical texts and check the qualifications of the authors. You'll often see MD, PhD. Kampack: They actually conduct research. They do. Most of the UI's researches that give them the ranking edge over other universities in Nigeria are from the UCH. Prof Isaac Adewole alone has hundreds. That said. They should be told that all their "residencies", fellowships and professional qualifications are not up to masters degree. Afterall, there are academic programmes in medicine. There are medical doctors with masters and PhDs. Dr. Sunny Kuku of the EKO Hospital has 2 PhD degrees in the field of medicine, and he also did those residencies and fellowships as well. But since they have allowed them to get away with it for so long, if there's any need for a change, it is only rational that the NUC give them a cutoff date when the current generation is expected to produce the requisite qualifications while the new policy is applied to fresh appointments. They need time to enrol for masters first then PhD thereafter. |

MrEgghead: Everybody understands that. It is not only in the field of medicine. There was a time in Nigeria (not too long ago) when PhD is not a requirement to lecture in Nigerian universities. That was why people like Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and others lectured for years and became professors without having a PhD. Such is very highly unlikely under the current dispensation. But things have changed. The NUC's regulation now makes PhD a requirement for all lecturers irrespective of their discipline. Perhaps the reason you are just knowing it is because they have limited the enforcement to other disciplines until now. You should also bear in mind that other professions have their own certifications which lead to fellowships in their fields, and they are not equivalent to a PhD. For instance, a computer expert with a CPC certification or an accountant with an FCA or finance professionals with CFA cannot be said to have an equivalent of a PhD. However, it should be emphasized that NUC should give medical doctors time to upgrade their academic qualifications if they choose to remain as lecturers. |
