I love street art so much but it is quite rare in Nigeria. Though, there are plethora of talented street artist here in Nigeria but support from government, private and NGOs still elude them.

Brenda Fassie’s statue returns to Newtown

Johannesburg residents and tourists can finally rest easy as the city of Joburg confirmed that the statue of Brenda Fassie will return to Newtown.

This comes after an outcry from the public when the statue was taken down without informing residents. The city said that it was taken for repairs.

“The much-loved Brenda Fassie statue will be returning to the Newtown Cultural Precinct, to occupy a place of honour at the public plaza outside the Market Theatre. Previously located outside Newtown’s Bassline (currently Music Factory), the statue was removed for repairs on 11 June 2019, following concerns about its safe-keeping,” confirmed the city in a statement.

The city says they were looking for a cultural space that is accessible to the public and protected by local stakeholders.

The sculpture was one piece in a collection of artworks transferred to the City of Johannesburg by the Sunday Herald Times in 2006 to commemorate 100 years of newsmakers and events and intended to be a gift to the Johannesburg community.

The Brenda Fassie Statue is a well-loved, interactive commemoration of an iconic South African musician.

Hi XhosaNosta!

It's a piece called "Perceiving Freedom" in Cape Town. Quite controversial and has been vandalized before.

The glasses face Robben Island & have a plaque of Mandela wearing Ray-ban sunglasses.

Cape Town artist 'fears for his life' after Ray-Ban sculpture vandalised

2014

Artist Michael Elion has responded to the vandalism of his controversial piece, Perceiving Freedom, by expressing fear for his life.

Elion said that he laid charges yesterday against a long list of people, even before the defacement took place on Sea Point promenade last night.

"It is an incitement of violence," he said.
The giant sunglasses, co-financed by eyewear maker Ray-Ban, were erected as a memorial to the late Nelson Mandela. They face Robben Island and are accompanied by a plaque with a picture of Mandela wearing sunglasses.

Elion and his work have been called disrespectful across social media.

Last night, the sculpture was defaced with the words "Myopic Art" stencilled on to them, as well as the words "We broke your hearts" spraypainted on the lenses. This is in reference to the victims of Marikana and in the centre of the lenses, is the famous image of the "man in the green blanket", Mgcineni Mambush Noki, above the sentence "Remember Marikana".

Elion, who called the incident a criminal act, said the damage is costly, because the frames are made from polycarbon and he is not sure if they will be able to get the spraypaint off. However, they will restore the sculpture as best they can.

In other countries, is it government that supports them?
Art is about passion. In Niggeria money is y'all passion. If you dont get paid for doing it you dont venture into it. Many of those artists are not rich

Government support isn't all about financial assistance, but creating a conducive environment and atmosphere for citizens to express or showcase their passion.
