EPISODE 10
It was the beginning of February, the harsh harmattan breeze has given way for a scorching sun. “Climate change” they had called it on the tv, the news lady that had her eye led looking like an old paint brush saddened with heavy mascara, and her mouth bent one sided as she tried mimicked Christian Amanpour. “…according to the Nigerian ministry of health, staying hydrated is very essential…” reported the news lady last night.

A drop of sweat found its way into her eye, she shut her eyes and rubbed them with her fist. When the pain wouldn’t go away, she lifted her blouse to wipe sweats off her face and rubbed her eyes some more.

“I heard it’s not healthy to rub your eyes vigorously like you are doing…you may damage your eyes” Olisa smiled up at her
He was a very warm and jovial young man she met the day she moved in. he had opened the gate for the truck that brought her things and had helped her the next day in arranging her things.

“Olisa, I didn’t know you are around” she returned his smiles

He took the dry clothes from her and walked her up to her door “I didn’t go anywhere today”

“Hmm” she nodded “You hardly go anywhere”

Olisa laughed and handed the clothes back to her “I don’t need to go out to make money, my laptop is my office” he stood at akimbo while she leaned by the door

“Are you a ‘Yahoo boy’?” she squinted at him

“Not at all” he heaved a breath “Let’s Just say I work from home…I am a software developer” he flashed her a smile “You what do you do? You go out early in the mornings and come home before some of us wakes up”

“Business…I buy and sell stuffs” feeling ashamed to tell him what she sells; she turned away from him. luckily, he was ready to leave

“Okay Amaka, I hope to see you more often, I think you are the only sane person in this compound” he gave out a chuckle

She bid him good bye and walked back inside the house which she was yet to see as hers. It didn’t have anything that screams her name;

…I want you to be comfortable so you can begin a new life” Gbenga had said in the letter he sent to her “I hope you finds it good enough…” was he mocking her when he wrote that? The new one-bedroom flat was heaven compared to the death trap she called a house.

The boys he had sent to help her move treated her with respect and it had amused her; “Ma’am this…Ma’am that…Pastor Gbenga said we should help you…pastor Gbenga said we shouldn’t leave until you are settled…” looking at them, she could guess what they were thinking, to them, she must be someone special to their pastor Gbenga.

Amaka carefully lay the clothes on the bed and started folding them. This wasn’t the kind of life she was used to and she felt like ‘Nne Ikwuoma’ who went to omugwo at her daughter’s place in Norway, it was reported that the poor woman got home sick and cried every night “abaghidighim be ndi na asu supiri supiri (I don’t want to stay in a strange land)” she would complain “kpona m ka je hu ndi nwunye dim o (Take me home to stay with my fellow women)

She should be grateful to Gbenga, but she was rather scared. “I am very sorry I will not be here to welcome you to your new home, there is a case I have been working on so I need to travel urgently…” Gbenga’s letter had explained.

Gbenga had ended his letter with “The church boy” and it had made her smile. Amaka walked back to the sitting room and looked out from the window; her landlady just drove in; a beautiful woman that didn’t look anything close to fifty, she remained inside her car for a while. Amaka was about to close her curtain when her eyes caught Olisa walking towards the parked Hunda CRV.

The woman stepped out of the car, looked around before handing a bag to Olisa who smiled broadly and gave the woman a quick kiss and walked off. “Subtle sinners” Amaka muttered and closed the window.

*
The day she was contacted for the job, she had asked what kind of job it was, “It will pay you well and get you off the street for the rest of your life” was the answer she got.

She was a petty thief and a hood drug dealer, not that street life favored her though, but it was all about survival. “Do I have to sleep with an animal?” she had asked when she was told how much was involved; two hundred thousand naira for a night, and it could be constant if she performs well. However, nothing had prepared her for the job she was asked to perform.

The man stays alone in a big mansion, his home drips of wealth yet he had chosen to be tortured half of the night.

Martha took another bottle of drink from the bar tender who looked at her with worry yet said nothing as she drawn herself inside the bottle.

What sin could a man commit to make him subject himself to such self-torture? she has seen things in the hood but this was one weird thing she couldn’t understand.

“No matter what you see there, do not ask him any question or go snooping around…you will get yourself killed” she had been instructed before she went to the mansion the first time.

She didn’t rush this third bottle; she drank a little and wiped her mouth. Yesterday was the fourth time she went to torture a grown man, and each time she wanted to stop, his groanings and cries weakened her, yet he would bid her to continue “Harder!” he would command.

He had instructed she cover her face “I don’t want to see what you look like” he had said, but she had wondered why he had allowed her see what he look like.

Martha drank again and spilled some drinks on her blouse, she searched fruitlessly for a tissue in her bag,

“Here” a man took a sit beside her and offered her a hanky

She took it and tried cleaning her wet blouse, the man took pleasure in watching her breasts bounce like balloons while she cleaned her blouse.

“How much?” he asked, licking his lips and his eyes glues to her bosom

“What?”

“What will it cost me to drink from this fountain of life?” he grinned

“Martha followed his eyes to her breast “Bleep off” she said and threw his hanky back to him

*
“Hi”

Gbenga had his eyes fixed on her, she looked different. With her hair wet and droplets of water on her skin, he could guess she just had her bath.

“Can I come in?” he had never been uneasy before a woman for a long time. What was it about this lady that kept bringing him back to her? He should have gone home from the airport, but there he was before a lady he was supposed to have nothing to do with.

“Yes…sure” she moved aside and he stepped in

“This place is beautiful” he said as he busied himself looking around the house.

Amaka walked behind him and stopped as he did “I got your letter…and…ehm…the guys you sent were helpful”

“Its nothing really” he smiled

No matter how much she tried to block the thought, it was obvious to her that Gbenga was a very handsome man, with eyes that looked as if he just woke up from sleep and a very charming smile. For the first time after a long while, he heart actually raced because of a man “ehm…I want to thank you for everything…” her eyes desperate to look at something else aside his face “But I think we may have given the guys false impression” she blinked severally

He frowned “How?”

“The way they addressed me…I think they may assume there is something going on between the two of us”

Gbenga didn’t respond to that, he heaved a sigh and walked pass her to seat down. “I hope you are comfortable here?”

“Yes…yes” she was uncomfortable with his eyes on her, and the consciousness of her unclothedness came upon her. her heart rose and fall heavily “Ehm…you said you had an emergency” she said

“Yes…a case we are working on…” she sat there listening to him tell about his work, the movement of his lips made her wonder what it would feel like to have him kiss her again “So how have you been?” he asked

“Oh I am fine…” she looked down on her fingers “Gbenga”

“Hmm”

“I…ehm…never mind. I made pottage yam; do you mind?”

“I would love nothing else than to eat right now” he said with a plea

“Okay, I will just…” she couldn’t finish the sentence but she stood up and went inside.

Gbenga followed her with his eyes, the movement of her backside that made her yellow towel dance, the shape of her legs and her slender waist captured his attention. He knew how dangerous staying with her would be, yet he didn’t want to leave.

The days he was away made him to think about what he felt for Amaka; it was new, not like what he had with her years back. this new feeling excited him yet he was worried.

She had changed into a short gown by the time she entered with his food “I hope you like it” she said and placed the food on the table before him.
Gbenga ate in silent, then he turned to her “I missed you” he said and resumed eating.

He waited for sometime after eating for her to say something to him, anything could have been fine. But she kept mute “Amaka” he called “please don’t be angry with me, I know I am not supposed to be telling you this but…I think I am in love with you”

She froze, it was as if he saw her vulnerability, like he read her mind. She had hated him until he started coming too close, preaching Christ and forgiveness. She couldn’t tell when she started going soft for him, all she knew was that the man seated beside her made her jitter and had succeeded in weakening her.

“You don’t know what you are saying” she muttered

“I am a man, and I know what I feel” he moved close to her “I am trying to fight this feeling Amaka but I am not succeeding. I left for Canada partly because I wanted to stay away for a while, to see if I could forget whatever I feel for you but…”

She shook her head “Gbenga please stop! This is ridiculous! You don’t even know me!”

“I know you Amaka”

“No you don’t, I have done terrible things, things I am not proud of!”

“I don’t care!” he held her face “I cannot deny what I feel for you girl”

“But you can change it! See I appreciate what you have done for me so far but…let it end at that, we don’t belong together, we are two worlds apart”

He held her gaze “Love happens Amaka, people don’t plan to fall in love, they just do”

He was a breath away from her, her heart panted heavily and his eyes drawn hers. He didn’t plan it but when his lips touched hers, he couldn’t pull away neither could she. He closed his eyes and sent a message to her with his lips.

She had wanted this, had thought of it severally, so she held his head down and kissed him back hungrily.

He pulled her closer, patted her mouth and took her tongue in his mouth. Desire ran through his body and he felt his manhood grew rigid “Jesus” he muttered and gently pulled himself away.

“I am so sorry Amaka…I don’t mean to do this…oh God” he looked away in shame “See I…you…I mean”

“Gbenga please shut up” Amaka said

He looked at his phone and stood up “I have to leave”

She didn’t stop him, but when he got to the door he stopped and looked back “I love you Amaka, I really do. I know I have done you wrong in the past but this time will be different” she didn’t say a word.

He left her wondering if he had succeeded in making a fool of himself and ended up shutting the remaining door of friendship between both of them. What would she think of him now? What would his father also think of him?

*
He was trying to sleep when he got her message;

“I can’t sleep and it’s because of you, you have succeeded in ruining my night, church boy. And yes, for a pastor, you a quite a good kisser (Laughs) don’t ask me how I got your phone number, I have my ways. Anyways, don’t love me yet until you hear what I have to tell you tomorrow or anytime you are free. Goodnight Gbenga

He read the message over and over again before he began typing his reply, but he couldn’t figure out the best reply for her.
Goodnight, lady that stole my heart” he finally settled for a short reply and slept with a smile on his face

LOL, it's a diary. Any thread created in the diary section of NL is always locked to comments. It's not me, that's how NL is.

Igarra is the town/village, while Etuno is the Language. I speak it fairly though.

Oh, okay, I didn't know that
But it's non fiction right?
I'm from Igarra that's why I asked, I know about my "town" (my mom said I should call it town not village)
I won't bother to write in etuno, I speak the language better than I write it

Lol, please don't do that. Let's just converse in English. I'm a fairly good speaker too. Nice meeting you, Oremeyi.

The light is fairly constant and even when it tries to be constant, the voltage is awful. But I kinda love it there though, no one is ever minding their businesses. LOL.

Would you be kind to modify your post and remove the last word? Thank you.

LOL, Igarra is such a small town and so everyone know themselves there and go to each others houses regularly especially the aged.

I don't live there, I go there once in a while, usually during festive seasons.

I really do not fancy talking about personal stuf on here. Please reply me with your whatsapp digits if you'd like to talk more. Thanks.

Episode 11

Amaka slept like a baby that night, for the first time in many years, she slept with no fear nor burden. Tomorrow she would be revealing the existence of their son and she hoped he would love the little boy too.

Her mother would have laughed at her has she been alive, “Do not harbor hate in your heart Amaka, it’s a small world, you may not know where you will end up with this young man” her mother had insisted even on her sick bed.

“I will never cross part with Gbenga and his family! I hate them so much mother! Heaven help me the day I will set my eyes on Gbenga again, Mother I will…”

“You will do nothing Amaka, you are hurting now my baby but thank God it happened this way, you have a brighter day ahead of you”

Her mother had died with only memories of gloomy days, and there she was; blushing at the thought of the same man who caused her so much pain.

She wasn’t eager to get out of her room even when her phone woke her up at 4:30 am. She grunted and covered her face with a pillow. She would have been getting ready for “town market” where she had to push and haggle aggressively just to buy a bag of crayfish. Amaka yawned and coiled herself on the bed “Not today” she was going to enjoy lazing about today, and would start her hustling maybe tomorrow.

Her ears picked a sound which she ignored at first but couldn’t ignore the second time, she tied a wrapper round her chest and went to the sitting room.

“The Tramp now leaves in Paradise”

The stranger in her sitting room spoke with out turning towards her “Hmm, nice place” he mocked

“Who are you?” she was scared to go close “How did you get in here”

“Oh!” he turned and Amaka gasped

“You!” she said slowly, fear overtook her and her body shivered “How did you find me?”

He placed his hands on her shoulder and she pulled away “Sweetheart, you have forgotten that I am invincible” he chuckled and turned away from her “I don’t blame you, you don’t really know me that much” he squinted his eyes and looked at her questionably “or maybe I need to remind you a little, Amaka the girl with the golden skin” he watched her expression changed “You do remember” he said with satisfaction

“I don’t understand, what do you want from me?” she asked

“Everything” he brushed his fingers on her cheek “but we will take it slowly sweetheart” she slapped his hand off and he ignored “it’s a pity you have stopped coming around the club where you shake your arse off for chicken change, I had gone there every day looking for you”

“Why?” she asked

He looked her from head to toe, “I don’t blame those men dying to watch you every night, you have always been a little dirty thing way back in school…” he closed up on her “how many of those men screw you after watching you spread like a slut?” he held her by the hair and she whimpered
“How much do the pay you to bounce on their miserable erections”

“Get your hands off me you sick fellow, I owe you no explanation about my life” she would not allow him make her weak

“Of course, you owe me” he laughed “Have you forgotten some nights ago, you killed that man and walked away free. I saw you, I recorded everything…waiting for a day like this”

She was scared “I didn’t kill that man, he just died…”

“sweetheart, I know you didn’t kill him” he drummed his fingers on the couch “But someone has to take the blame you know, someone will go in for it”

“You knew I didn’t do it…” she squinted “You were there that night; you took me to him…you framed me!” she pointed accusing finger on him

“Oh yea, the man was already a dead man walking,”

“Why did you do it? What did I do to you?”

“Why I did it? Because I would love nothing more than to watch you beg me for mercy, what you did? It’s a long story” when he saw tears ran down her cheek, he gave a smirk and continued “I have a proposal for you though” he went to couch and sat down:

“Hmm” He tapped on the seat “Good leather, how much did you pay for this?” he laughed “Oh I forgot, you don’t pay for anything”

“Please get out of my house!” she said between clung teeth

“Are you sure you want me to do that? Anyways, I have a proposal.” He stood up, one could mistake him for boxer, his muscles were visible even from his shirt and tight chinos trouser “You will work for me, go where I want you to go to, Bleep who I want you to Bleep…”

“I would rather die than do such, I can never agree to be used by you”

“If you think I will just hand this camera to the police, then you have something else coming” he pulled her roughly to himself “I will make you miserable, I will hand you over to the most terrible men and watch them tear you apart, limb by limb until you have nothing left”

“Please, I can’t do what you asking of me, I have a son!”

He turned to her “Oh, you have a son” she nodded desperately “why didn’t anyone tell me about him” he looked around “He is not here? I don’t mind making my acquaintance” he said smiling

“Please understand, I want to give up this life because of him” Amaka pleaded

“Too late sweetheart, and get ride of that son of yours”

“Please!”

“It is not a negotiation sweetheart; I want what I want and you re going to comply” he looked at his watch and headed towards the door “And cut off anything that you have with that little daddy’s boy. I know he got this place for you” he paused “What did you give him in return by the way? Free pussy?” he chuckled “I know who he is and who his parent is, if you don’t stay away from him, I will kill him and feed you his flesh”

He walked away before she could say any other word.

*
“Hi” Gbenga said with a glowing smile “I couldn’t wait to come and hear what to tell me today”

Amaka stood looking at him like she had not seen him before “What are you doing here?” she asked.

Gbenga was confused “You told me to come today, you said you like me and you have something to tell me”

She shook her head amidst sobs

“Are you okay? Amaka is everything alright?” he stepped inside and she followed

“You have to go away please” she sniffed and wiped tears roughly from her face “Go now!”

“But…Amaka what is going on? Did I do something wrong?”

“No! it is not you Gbenga, it is me, this is what I have wanted to tell you since” she sniffed “I have dark secrets, pasts that are haunting me, you can’t entangle yourself with me”

He moved to hold her but she pulled away “I thought we talked about this yesterday, you agreed to start all over” he said

“Gbenga please! Go back to you quiet life and leave me alone. I don’t want you to die, don’t you understand?”

“What?”

“Get out of my life! Don’t come back please”

“I am in love with you, I want to stay and do things with you. I though we could walk things out and maybe, I thought that you have come to like me a little…you told me yourself” he held her hand “You kissed me yesterday, I felt something, I though you did”

“Shut up Gbenga! Please don’t say any more words, I can’t take it!” how she wished he could understand and save himself “You really want to know what I feel about you? I don’t feel anything” she lied “you mean nothing to me and don’t think that because you got me a house that I will fall for you, you mean nothing to me!”

Amaka saw the hurt in his eyes as she said those words, her heart bled, but it was the only way to save him, even though they had history together, he shouldn’t be blamed for her decisions and shouldn’t bear the consequences with her

She watched him leave and sank on her couch and cried.
