Twelve cattle on Thursday died while grazing at an open field belonging to the Nigeria-Korea Vocational Institute near the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja.

Witnesses said the incident which happened at about 11:00am left the cattle rearer and residents in shock.

Malam Adamu Suleiman, who sells orange near the area, said the cattle were grazing in the open field when suddenly they started falling down one after the other. He said the herder rushed to call for help but “there was nothing anyone could do as they have all died before we get there.”

He said they could only assist in evacuating the animals after the authorities were called in to ascertained what happened. According to him, as at the time of the incident, students were not around due to the closure of the Institute as a result of COVID-19 pandemic.

He said the cattle may have died as a result of poison from the grass, adding that “it’s possible that herbicide was sprayed on the grasses to prevent them from growing that morning”. Also, the Police spokesman in the state, CSP William Ayah, confirmed the incident.

He said the cattle were grazing in the open field when they started dying, adding that the Chief Security Officer of the Polytechnic drew the attention of the police to the incident.

CSP Ayah said the police have reached out to the Seriki of Zango, who took custody of the dead animals.

Watch out how Fulani herdsmen will come for revenge, by killing every body close to that field very soon. Because they will assume the community planned for the poisoning of their brethren. So people living around there should better run for their dear lives for now. Because these men value a cow's life more than an hundred human lives, not to talk of 12 cows. Kai...!

Bubu will not like this... His boy (Yahaya) will have to cook up a believable story to pacify him otherwise "Herdsmen" will come back for return match soon.

I feel sorry for the loss, but herdsmen should have their own fields. Enough of grazing on other peoples fields or farms.

I still fear that town that used thunder to chase away the herdsmen on their land - in dry season, make thunder dey strike and kill only cows for dry season.

This is the kind of news that makes our darling daddy develop high blood pressure.
Meanwhile, some of us at BBQGRILLS are on the way to pick up the carcasses for our dead meat grills

Meanwhile we advise those living in that vicinity to contact the Chadian Army for protection

This is one among many reasons why sane people are calling for prohibition of open grazing. Its barbaric, uncivil, and outdated. They should do ranching dem no go hear. I pray this does not lead to another crisis in that area because the Fulani I know will think the people in the area deliberately kill their fellow brothers, hence a revenge!
