Oduduwa is from Ife. Yoruba. Strong cheesy grin cheesy Suicide loading in Benin Kingdom tonight .....................

No I didn't say Benin is great. I simply said it was grounded into a mere village. And I cited scholars, Ben-Amos and Thornton.

Do you want to read what they said in details. Did you stop getting scared of reading

Oyo was rendered desolate and in ruins, Ife was non existent only in legends, so if u say Benin turned into a village (not true btw) there’s nothing new there.. all Kingdoms decline

As for Oduduwa, he is not Yoruba, no Yoruba blood in him.. He is a foreigner from Mecca.. type oduduwa in google and that’s the only result u will get. He is a foreigner if u like enter deep sleep, when u wake up he will still be a foreigner from Mecca.

You confirmed again that you're scared of reading.

He simply agreed with me that the Benin girl I was replying to was foolish. He also agreed that the former Oba Of Benin was foolish.

He then agreed with me that: Oduduwa is a Ife-Yoruba man. grin grin grin

Go back and read the comments again, but this time take your brain along with you.

So if he agreed with you that oduduwa is Yoruba from Ife, do u agree with him that oduduwa was a coup plotter who was murdered and his followers banished and Oranmiyan came back with guns blazing? Lol una no well sha

You are a liar. The historians didn't say Ife or Oyo. They said Benin. See below

"Towards the end of the seventeenth century, ... the Edo Kingdom of Benin had been racked for some years by civil war. ..., Benin City had been sacked and in his day ("1699 -1701" ) was reduced to a 'mere village'."

And for Oduduwa, we learn Yoruba History from History books not popular Google result.

The mythical "Izoduwa", for example, is portrayed as a real human being on wikipedia, but guess what historians say. They say no human of such ever existed. grin grin grin grin

Oduduwa is an Ife-Yoruba man. You thick skull. grin grin

The article by Ben-Amos and Thornton (a very good article, read it many years ago and it was one of the works I was alluding to in my first mention of a civil war), is only saying that the capital (Benin City), except the palace itself, was temporarily ruined by the civil war, going by van Nyendael's account. In fact there were still active armies on both sides (the royal army and the rebel army), even after the royal army's temporary defeat by the rebel army, and there was not some evidence of Benin as a "state" somehow being reduced to a "village", unless one deliberately misreads the text. Indeed, the authors of the article observe that van Nyendael mentioned that the Benin state's "bureaucracy" was functioning intact (even despite the impact of the war on the kingdom's capital). The king of Benin eventually defeated the rebels by the 1720s with the help of the Ezomo of Benin (a military commander from the Esan/Ishan area) as the main commander of the royal army, in return for which the Ezomo's status and privileges within the kingdom were elevated. The article by Ben-Amos and Thornton ends by stating that Benin's economy was thriving again by the mid-1700s as attested by a visitor, and that Benin City was once again a large city at least by the time that it was described as such by later European visitors to Benin City in the late 1700s.

You may be right, that's why we are now re-examining the whole story because it doesn't sound right and doesn't add up.

Unlike some Yoruba people here, we are ready to research and find the truth no matter where it leads.

The current history of Benin/Ife and Yoruba smells of politics and supremacy tussles.

That to us is not history. People deserve to know their history rather than fabrications and playing politics with it.

I smell conspiracy between Benin and Oyo monarchy against Ife.

All they need to say is Ooni is a descendant of a shrine keeper as recorded by the great Yoruba historian Johnson.

Oba of Benin becomes the most acknowledged senior son of Oranmiyan and Alaafin his junior brother. Or Ooni and Alaafin continue to fight themselves whilst Benin stays senior.

The way it stands, Oyo, Ife and Benin don't agree on who Oduduwa was. They all have their own versions which makes the own history ridiculous.

Some say Oduduwa is

1. Benin banished prince
2. He was from Mecca
3. Climbed down from sky with chains
4. Son of Ham that was driven out of Saudi Arabia

We can all come together to find the truth rather than see it as fight between Benin and Yoruba.

We believe the Benin/Ife connection as it currently stands is a fabrication.

Johnson was at no time a historian, he was a doctor who reduced Oyo history for Yoruba & his contemporary events to writing. The latter part containing data on the Ekitiparapo wars & the establishment of colonial government are regarded among the academic historians as solid.

Having said that, the only reason the early history of Ife [not necessarily the whole of Yoruba] appears not to add up is because the Oyo who had some of the early writers and close contacts with the European skewed history to give their throne a background for the fraudulent position they ascribed to it & have continued to struggle to sustain by citing archival documents about salary scale and signatures with the Europeans - former was based solely on population & the latter was based on Samuel Johnson factor as he acted as the Alaafin's interpreter/writer among other factors.

This misfired and baseless history was what Bini king attempted to provide an alternative for. There really is no problem to be resolved, everyone just needs to recognise that Oyo's history is not Yoruba's national history and certainly not the history of Ile-Ife.

I like your spinning the main capital but excluding its neighboring villages was sacked, ruined, and grounded.

Well, but the article also said:

"... The Edo KINGDOM of Benin had been racked for some years by civil war."

Do you think it's a sane statement that the principal city (and also the neighboring villages within the kingdom) were reduced to a MERE VILLAGE?? Lol.

David van Nyendael's emphasis was obviously on the extent of the damage done by the war to have even crushed the primary city --- let alone smaller towns and villages around it.

Anyways, however you love to spin it (ineffectually tho), the thick skull I was exchanging with never knew of such about Benin Kingdom.

All he know is myth like: Oba Of Benin owns the land from here to Europe.. grin cheesy

Moreover, you didn't return as promised with the alleged Oyo or Yoruba account which claims Ajaka to be the first Alaafin of Oyo. Lol.

This is unclear, care to reword? Thank you.

There really isn't more to share on it. Let us just say that it was Oyo that said Oduduwa descended with a chain & again migrated from the East.

This East has been taken to be Mecca by Oyo Muslims; Sudan by Prof. Biobaku; Egypt by some old fellow with degree in Theology; & lastly, Igodomigodo/Ughoton by the Bini.

All of these Mecca, Sudan, Egypt & Igodomigodo/Ughoton claims were attempts to hijack the East migration tradition. Now what I think I just need to share with you is that this tradition of origin is not Ife's record of the origins of Osin Ora [Oduduwa] and that your people & king wrote a story to respond to a false narrative from Oyo.

Well the article doesn't mention the surrounding towns and villages all or even mostly being ruined, and in fact Nyendael's account portrays the state's structure as continuing intact even after the devastation of the capital by the war. Who knows, maybe that part of Nyendael's account is inaccurate, but it's there. Anyway, I was only clarifying a detail about the kingdom vs. the capital. The rebel army struck a major blow at the capital and gained a victory, but the state continued to function, and then recovered completely later on including the capital itself. I was just bringing that up in case any other readers of the thread were confused about what was really in the article.

I am still looking for the account and I only returned to this thread to comment on a few other things in the meanwhile. I've read hundreds of articles (maybe more) and books on Nigerian and West African history and this was from nearly a decade ago so it wouldn't be easy to track down.

Who knows, maybe that part of Nyendael's account is inaccurate, but it's there. Anyhow, I was only clarifying a detail about the kingdom vs. the capital. The rebel army struck a major blow at the capital and gained a victory, but the state continued to function, and then recovered later on. On clarifying the details about the kingdom vs the capital, my logical angle which I was drawing your attention to is this:

The capital is always the grandest in the kingdom. And in the standard of a late 1600/early 1700 Benin Kingdom, other territories within the kingdom apart from the capital (Benin City) are already villages or at least very small towns.

So it would have been a tautological fallacy for the account to have spelled out something like: The villages too were reduced to mere villages. Lol.

No, the focus was on the principal city in order to emphasize the extent of the damage.

I hope you get my line of reasoning from the account.

As regards your search for the alleged Oyo or Yoruba account which claims Ajaka to be the first Alaafin of Oyo ... I say, GOODLUCK "LOOKING".

Interestingly, I have here with me even as I type, an encyclopedic summary of the different Yoruba accounts on the early beginnigs of the Great Oyo Empire, not once did it talk of the first Alaafin as being Ajaka.

Even Lijadu's Nupe or Frobenius' Nupe/Bariba says nothing of such.

What I got from the account was that the rebel commander (most likely the Iyase, formerly the commander of the royal army before he rebelled) and his forces struck directly at the capital and wrecked it, I didn't see anything about him successfully devastating the whole country/kingdom (and it's unclear how the state would still function as Nyendael described if that were actually the case), and that isn't in the account, but you're welcome to your own interpretation. My interpretation is quite holistic because same article says the following:

"... The Edo KINGDOM of Benin had been racked for some years by civil war."

Anyways, whether it is only Benin City that was sacked and reduced to a mere village; or it was inclusive of other lesser towns; such distinction (if any) actually makes no difference to the education I was providing earlier to the poor thick skull who is absolutely oblivious of such historical fact.
