Donations To Churches: Charity Or Tithes? by Mordecai(m): 12:58pm On Apr 19, 2020
I came across a post on NL front-page today asking if one should pay tithes from the N20000 palliative expected to be paid to some of our needy citizens.

I asked a friend of his opinion and his response got me aghast. He believes they are obligated to take 10% of whatever they receive to the church.

The bolded above is my bone of contention.

Numbers 18: 21-26 specifically notes that tithes are to be paid to the Levites who are chosen to minister in the tabernacle, and not to any other. This was noted as an everlasting statute.

Exodus 20 also specifically noted that only in the place of God's choosing can one take his offerings, tithes, vows etc to.

In the light of these, is it not a travesty for churches to demand that people bring their tithes to them? Are they Levites? Do their church buildings qualify as the place of God's choosing?

While this should not be misconstrued as a call for churchgoers not to donate to their churches, the point is this:

Churches can levy funds on its members. The individuals can make contributions to the church. But the church has no claim on any fixed percentage of the individuals' earnings as the pastors are neither Priests (descendants of Aaron) nor Levites (descendants of Levi). Every donation by a member is a charity, borne of freewill and is not a tithe.

So coming back to the original question, I do not believe one is obligated to donate 10% of earnings or of the palliatives, to a church. Doing so is entirely a charitable gesture, borne of freewill.

It could as well be given to an NGO and it would still be noted as charity.

Again, I am not saying one should not donate to his church.

Don't just call it a tithe.

And the church should not demand tithes nor fixed percentages of member's earnings too. It has no legitimate claim to tithes or fifths or twentieths or whatever.

PS: Feel free to air your opinions. My opinion is not law nor is it final. If you have dissenting views, present them let's review.

If you throw insults, I won't respond. The mods should then notice you anyway and use the hammer grin

Tithe is 10% of increase and as far as I am concerned the palliative is a form of sudden unexpected increase just like harvest, therefore tithe can be paid. it would have been a different the 20k was meant for something specific like a fixed expense (rent, books, fee). In the later scenario it is a money in transit sort of.

Given that the prescribed recipients are Levites, are churches eligible to collect tithes? That's the question.

Thought I was replying to a sane OP. I am out.

Sometimes I donate money for churches, but nothing more. Should I do something else?

The Lord spoke of tithing and that it applied to every person. You must do it. No one asks you whether you want to or not. Of course, it is everyone's choice. But tithing is simply another measure of your obedience to the Lord. I always give the church a tenth of my earnings because I believe I can do it and should. And it doesn't affect my family's finances in any way. I've also done the Car Donation several times instead of selling my old car. No, I haven't given the car to my church or pastor. My church has no reason to have my old cars. I was giving the car away for recycling so it wouldn't just become a pile of scrap metal that no one looks at.

1. Jesus Christ instead explained to you that those are Children of God do not pay tithe/tax in the Name of the King - Matthew 17. So you need to be sure who exactly your Lord is because it can't be Jesus Christ. Those of you who pay tithes/taxes in the name of Jesus Christ deny yourselves sonship with God by your acts of disobedienceundecided
24 Jesus and his followers went to Capernaum. There the men who collect the two-drachma Temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Does your teacher pay the Temple tax?”
25 Peter answered, “Yes, he does.” Peter went into the house where Jesus was. Before Peter could speak,
Jesus said to him, “The kings on the earth get different kinds of taxes from people. But who are those who pay the taxes? Are they the king’s children? Or do other people pay the taxes? What do you think?”
26 Peter answered, “The other people pay the taxes.”Jesus said, “Then the children of the king don’t have to pay taxes - Matthew 17 vs 24 - 26
As Jesus Christ made clear, the Children of God do not pay taxes/Tithe in His name. undecided

2. Jesus Christ specifically commanded that you do your giving to your neighbors, those who are in need and the least of the brethren. He never asked anyone to donate to any of your church businesses or to the rich either using His Name. undecided

Monetary tithing is fraud.
God never requested Gentiles to tithe.
God never requested for money as tithes.
The Israelites never tithed outside of the promised land (when they were in captivity)

Oppose these with scriptural evidences, rather than sentiments.
