TonyRazor 107 year-old man leads protest as community holds mock burial for Nsugbe monarch There was tension on Sunday in Nsugbe, in the Anambra East Local Government Area , following a mock burial for the traditional ruler of the area, Igwe Victor Ntorka, by his subjects. Nsugbe, is the hometown of prominent personalities of Anambra State, including a governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2017 poll , Dr Tony Nwoye, Senator Alphonsus Igbeke and the Naval Officer in charge of South-East region/Delta/ Rivers States, Rear Admiral Perry Onuzulike. The Sunday protest involving widows, elders in-council and youths of the community was led by a 107 year-old blind man in the area, Pa Arinze Obiagwu. The protesters sang funeral songs, carried placards of various inscriptions and moved round the community with blaring ambulance carrying a casket purporting to be that of the monarch. Obiagwu, while speaking with reporters, said their monarch had desecrated the land of Nsugbe and was no longer fit and proper to lead them. Obiagwu said,"He has desecrated this community. Since I was born in this community about 107 years ago, I have not seen a king that has treated his subject this bad and unperturbed. "The worst is that the monarch has refused to recognize me as the oldest person in this community, a situation that has never happened in the history of Nsugbe. "From ages, our customs and tradition have a place for the oldest man in our community who is bestowed with some roles to play in guiding the younger ones, but this particular one said he won't recognise me. Did I make myself the oldest man here. It's the handiwork of God. So, I support his mock burial being conducted by our people today( Sunday)", the centunerian stated. The Spokesperson for the elders of the community, Nzeadigwe Nweke , while addressing the protesters, listed some of the alleged sins of the monarch to include highhandedness, intimidation and flagrant abuse of power which he said had led to mayhem in the community, including burning of houses. Efforts to get the reaction of the embattled monarch failed as his telephone line remained unavailable as of the time of filing the report. But a member of his cabinet who pleaded anonymity, described the allegations against the monarch as false and unfounded He said " Igwe( the monarch) is a good person. Everybody in this community, including the protesters, can attest to his goodness. "The allegations are false and politically motivated. Igwe is a strong supporter of the governor Willie Obiano's government which certain politicians here don't support for reasons best known to them. "No body can remove Igwe Ntorka from the throne. He remains the traditional ruler of Nsugbe and he is the only person recognised as such by the Anambra State government. All you are seeing is about the 2021 governorship election in the state which some people here have vowed to stop the All Progressives Grand Alliance from being reelected. Igwe is innocent of all these allegations.

The Igbos have a quality which i will take as a tradition of penchant quest to stand against injustice without regard for age, position and "timing" (I won't butress this ) Chinua Achebe elaborated this fact in his book 'There was a country' —explaining how Kingship in Igbo land was made so expensive to the point of impoverishing the incoming King, so that he either backs out or loses his respect first. I don't know if it is same till date, especially after some could kiss Kanu's feet and agree sheepishly to every nonsense he says, but this blind old man has proven his age to be 107 and a true Igbo ancestor as the great writer—Chinua Achebe— described |
