I would be having some days off from my place of work, so I could relax for the weekend.

Sunday morning, I was in the church with the rest of the family. I realized my mind was barely on what was going on. The odd thing was I was thinking about Naomi and could not get her pretty face from my mind. Oh Lord!

The only thing I really enjoyed in the church that day was the hymn:

There’s not a friend like the lonely Jesus,
No, not one
No, not one…

After the service, we went back home. I relaxed on my bed, trying hard not to think about Naomi. About two o’clock, her WhatsApp messenger came in.

‘How was the service?’ she asked.

‘Great,’ I replied. ‘What about yours?’

‘Wonderful. We sang wonderful story of love.’

I smiled. ‘We sang no friend like the lonely Jesus.’

‘So, how are you?’

‘I’m not sure I’m fine.’

‘Why?’

‘I’m kind of confused.’

‘Over what?’

That was a hard question. My mind was telling me two things. One said I should damn whatever would be the outcome and tell her I had feelings for her. Another one said no, I shouldn’t.

‘I don’t know.’ I wrote.

‘That’s funny. You don’t know why you’re confused?’

‘Something like that. Sometimes, what should be a simple expression becomes very complex.’

‘Perhaps, you made it complex.’

‘I think circumstance made it so.’

‘What circumstance?’

I grinned. ‘There are many odds. One, she is much older. Two, she earns much more than I do.’

‘Do you really have feelings for her? If yes, go ahead.’

‘She might laugh at me.’

‘Try first.’

‘She might insult me and tell me I should look for my mate.’

‘Perhaps, she will not.’

I hesitated. My heart was beating fast. What was wrong with me? Why was I becoming carried away? Maybe she was just teasing me. Why didn’t I just forget about her?
I soon got another message from her.

‘Be a man, Ola,' she wrote.

I smiled. Indeed, it was not easy to be a man. Alright, I would be a man. And I would damn whatever was the outcome. But I decided I would be subtle about it. I called her number. She picked it after several ring.

‘How is Ella?’ I asked.

‘She’s fine.’

‘My regards to her.’

‘Okay.’

‘Is she as beautiful as you are?’ I grinned at myself.

‘Am I beautiful?’

‘You’re more than beautiful. You’re a jewel.’

‘Thank you.’

I paused slightly. ‘I wondered why you’ve not got a man before now. You’re so beautiful.’

‘Getting a man is not by expediency. It is by choice.’

I sighed. She was surely picking my brain.

‘That’s philosophical,’ I said.

‘Yeah.’

I sighed again. Maybe I should just end the chats.

‘Thanks for your time,’ I said. ‘It’s a pleasure chatting with you.’

‘You’re welcome.’

I dropped my cell phone and stared at the small flat screen in the room. A Nigerian movie was shown. I tried to do something else and get Naomi off my mind. When Joyce came in, I tried to chat with her engagingly, but believe me, I could not push the image of Naomi into the oblivion. Later in the evening, I decided to call her and chat her up again.

‘I can’t get you off my mind,’ I said.

She laughed over the line. ‘Sorry about that.’
‘Is that all you could say?’

‘I should be the one to ask that question.’

I cleared my throat. ‘Were you ever married before?’

‘No.’

‘Where’s Ella’s father? What happened between the two of you?’

I thought I heard her sigh. ‘It’s a long story, but if you must know, her father is far away in Canada.’

‘Why’re you not with him?’

There was another long pause. ‘The relationship did not work. I was supposed to join him over there with the baby but the American wife he had did not make the plan fall through.’

I didn’t know what else to say. ‘Sorry about that.’

‘It’s okay.’

‘You’ve captured my heart, Naomi,’ I said. She didn’t say a thing. ‘Hello, can you hear me?’

‘Sure.’

‘What can you say to what I’ve said?’

‘Nothing for now,’ she said.

‘Nothing?’

‘Yes. For now.’

‘Alright. Think over it.’ I cut the line.

Could it be that I misread her intentions? Could I be making a mistake? Well, even if it was a mistake, there was no crime in it.

I went to the study room to read news online. I always loved to read both the local and international news and to be abreast of happenings. I got a message alert from my service provider. A recharge of two thousand naira was credited to my sim. It was from Naomi.
Immediately, I put a call across to her. ‘Why did you send that air time recharge?’ I asked gently.

‘I just felt like doing so.’

‘You didn’t have to do it,’ I said.

‘Why?’

‘What do you mean, why? I didn’t say those things I said because I want to be getting things from you.’

‘I didn’t say that was the reason.’

‘Well, I really appreciate the gesture, but you didn’t have to bother yourself.’

‘It wasn’t a bother.’

‘Alright, thank you very much, Naomi. Now, what can I send you?’

‘Anything lovely.’

‘Like what?’

‘Oh no, figure it out.’ She laughed over the line. ‘Seriously, don’t worry about sending me something. But if you insist, send me your love.’

I breathed in deeply. ‘Good. I’ll surely do that.’

‘Okay.’

She cut the line.

‘Who was that?’ Joyce asked. I was surprised to find that she was at the doorway and had been observing me.

‘Oh, it’s just a friend,’ I said.

She shook her head. ‘No, that look on your face shows that it’s not just a friend.’

‘Oh, come on, Joyce.’

‘Who is she? It must be a lady.’

‘And how can you tell?’

‘Because I know.’

I chuckled. ‘Yes, actually, it’s a lady I just met.’

‘Hmn, hmn. And you’re falling all over for her already.’

I shook my head. ‘Look, Joyce, let’s discuss something else.’

‘So this is how you’ll treat me.’

‘Oh, come on, what are you talking about?’

‘After all the love I gave you.’ With that, Joyce left angrily, slamming the door.

I shook my head again. How long would it take her to understand that we could not be lovers, no matter the mistake we had made?

By five o ‘clock on Monday morning, I sent a poem I had carefully crafted to Naomi. I wasn’t much of an artist, but I used to be very good in literature in my secondary school days. I was sure she would like the poem. Later, at my place of work, I decided to call her during the lunch break. The phone rang on and on, but she did not pick it.

Maybe she was very busy, I decided. I went back to work. Several minutes later, she called me back.

‘I saw your missed call,’ she said.

‘Yes. Good morning.’

‘Good morning. I saw your poem. It’s beautiful. Thanks.’

‘You’re welcome. How’s work?’

‘I’m not at work. I couldn’t go. I had a domestic accident.’

‘A what? I hope it’s not serious.’

‘No, this morning, I had a sprain on my right ankle while preparing for work.’

‘Oh, sorry about that.’

‘Thank you.’

‘You’ve taken some medication?’

‘Yes. I went to a chemist shop around. I’ll be okay.’

‘Okay. If you don’t mind, give me the address of your place. I’ll come and say hello after closing today.’

‘That’s alright. I’ll text it to you.’

‘Okay.’

Truly, a minute or so after I had spoken with her, she sent me the text message of her residence. She lived at Abina, off Randle Avenue, Surulere. I decided I would go there right after I closed from work.

At six o’clock on the dot, I left the bakery. From Agric bus stop, I took a BRT bus going to CMS. I would have to alight at Barracks bus stop. From there, I took a bike to Abina. I was in front of her residence by 6.55 p.m. It was a recently painted bungalow that looked small but nice.

‘Hello,’ I greeted.

‘Hi.’

She ushered me into her sitting-room. It was a cozy and nice place. A girl soon came in. Even without any introduction, I knew this must be Ella, her daughter.
‘Hey, Ella, meet my good friend, Ola. Ola, this is my daughter, my confidant and my best friend in the whole world, Ella.’

‘Ella, how d’you do?’

‘Fine, sir.’

She looked very much like her mother, except she used glasses.

‘What do I offer you, Ola?’ Naomi asked.

‘Nothing,’ I said. ‘I came to greet you. How’s the ankle?’ I stared at her right ankle and the bandaging around the place was obvious.

She touched the place slightly. ‘I’m relieved of the pain now. It’s getting better.’

I nodded. Ella left the sitting-room for an inner room.

‘Why don’t you want something, Ola? Are you shy?’

‘Oh, no. As I said, I came to greet you briefly and I’ll soon be going.’ I smiled and sat back comfortably. I studied her. She still looked very pretty
even in casuals.

‘How was work today?’ she asked.

‘Fine. It went very well.’

‘I appreciate your coming,’ she said.

I looked around the room again. ‘A nice place you have here,’ I said.

‘Thank you.’

‘I won’t be staying long,’ I said. ‘You know, I’m still going back to Ikorodu this evening.’

‘I understand,’ she said. ‘Thanks for the trouble.’

‘It’s alright.’

She adjusted on her seat. ‘Even if it’s just cold water, let me offer you,’ she said and called out Ella. She then asked her to get me a bottle of
cold water. I took the bottle and the glass and poured the water for myself.

‘Thanks for this,’ I said.

Naomi nodded.

‘If you don’t mind, you can come around on Saturday,’ she offered. ‘You’ll be well entertained then.’

It was my turn to nod. ‘That will be a pleasure.’ I stared at her.

‘Why’re you staring at me?’ she asked.

‘Oh,’ I blinked rapidly. ‘I’m sorry about that.’

She smiled and shook her head.

‘What does that mean?’ I asked.

Still smiling, she shook her head again. ‘Nothing.’

I held her hand. The palm was very soft against mine. In a swift move, I planted a short kiss on her lips. She looked surprised by my action. I
stood up.

‘I should be on my way, now,’ I said. ‘See you again.’

‘You had no permission to do what you just did,’ she said softly.

I gave her a dramatic bow. ‘Forgive me. Have a wonderful night, Naomi.’ I stared at her ankle. ‘And I wish you soonest recovery.’

She smiled. ‘Thanks for coming.’

‘My regards to Ella.’

‘Sorry, I won’t be able to accompany you a bit.’

‘It’s alright. Good night.’

I left the place a happy person. At the Barracks bus stop, there was now traffic gridlock. I crossed the expressway to the other side to take a
commercial bus back to Ikorodu. I didn’t get home until few minutes past nine in the evening. It was quite unusual, but no one raised an eyebrow. The one who could have done so – Joyce – had gone back to campus.

By nine thirty, Naomi called my line.

‘Hope you got home on time,’ she said.
‘Yes. About twenty minutes ago,’ I replied.

‘Good. Thanks for coming around.’

‘It’s a pleasure,’ I said. ‘Were you angry with me?’

‘Over what?’

‘Over the short kiss of the rose.’

She laughed shortly. ‘If I was angry, I would have given you a dirty slap.’

‘Ouch! And that would have been very painful.’

‘Yes.’

‘Ah, thank God you did not.’

‘Yes, thank God.’

‘Thanks for the call,’ I said, smiling.

‘Thanks for receiving it,’ she replied. ‘Well, just to be sure you got home safely. Good night, Ola.’

‘Good night, Naomi.’
