CHAPTER ONE

The sound of thunder claps gave people the impression that there would be a heavy downpour. People ran Helter skelter seeking for shelter before the Heavens sent down the rain. The road was filled with people running and walking hastily, nobody wanted to get drenched in the rain. It was early in the evening but the way the cloud kept giving signs of rainfall, it was slowly turning into night.

Bari held tightly unto her handbag as she increased her pace. Thunder claps sounded yet again making people growl and murmur. She muttered a silent prayer to God, she didn't want even a single droplet touching her, she had closed early from work when she noticed the moody cloud. She opened her bag and ransacked briefly "Oh Jesus Christ, my balm is not in my bag, are you sure i can survive this one?" She whispered to herself. Looking up and sighting a trycycle moving towards her, then she sighed in relief.

"Oga, Nibo Junction?" Bari asked the keke rider who looked at her first before replying.

"Yes, Nibo Junction, hold your #500" the keke man replied.

"#500? Haba na, is it because it wants to rain? Oga collect #200 na, the normal price is even 100 sef" she pleaded.

"if you no wan go tell me make i find better people abeg" the man said irritated.

Bari hissed and made to walk away when a liquid substance touched her face, she wiped it off and then shrieked in fear "Oh no, it has started dropping already" she turned just in time to see the Keke rider moving away.

"Wait, please" she bellowed and the Keke rider stopped, she hopped in immediately urging the driver to drive fast.

It didn't take long for the driver to drop her off at Nibo junction, she handed him a 500 naira note and ran into the street. The thunder claps came yet again but this time around with a few droplets of rain accompanying it.

"Nooo, God please hold the rain a bit for my sake, am almost home" she fearfully muttered scratching the spot where the rain had dropped.

It seemed the heavens listened to her prayers for they became calm afterwards with just the breeze blowing constantly serving as a reminder that it would still rain. She sighed in relief as she sighted her house, she hastened her steps greeting few people she met. She neared the Aboki that sold few things in a koisk just a gate before her apartment, she quickly looked away, she didn't want to have an episode that day. She muttered greetings to the Aboki with her face still thrown to the other side of the road.

Getting home, she unlocked her door, her parlour was still as neat as she had left it in the morning, three sofas adorned the living room, red in colour, complimenting the red paint used on the wall, her 32 inches LG plasma television kept on the TV stand, two home theater stood side by side with the TV stand in the middle, DVD kept under the television just in the second layer of the TV stand. Above the wall was the thermocool A.C sending cold waves to the living room, her dinning area which was occupied by a dinning table with four chairs pushed under it, water dispenser and a fridge, it had a connection door too that led to the kitchen.

She rushed into her room and hurriedly stripped, walked naked into the bathroom and had a hot bath, she came out in a jiffy after drying her body, applied Aboniki balm on her body afterwards and wore a black bum short with a red singlet. her room was sparkling clean and well arranged, her giant bed covered with a blue bedsheet, her wardrobe that had a glass door which also served as her mirror, a long shoe rack occupied with different type of shoes leaned on the wall close to the wardrobe and a ceiling fan rotating at a high speed, but then she sighed and wiped the tears that dropped.

"Life is not so fair" she muttered with a shrug going to the kitchen to look for something to eat.

CHAPTER TWO

The sound of her ringing phone woke her up from sleep. She stretched her right hand to the wall socket just above the bed, and unplugged her phone, courtesy of living in an environment that made use of federal light, there was always steady power supply. She glanced at the screen "My mom" stared back at her, she sighed before picking up.

"Good morning Mom" she yawned.

"What is good about the morning, Bari?" the woman asked swiftly.

"Mom, everything is good about the morning, at least you and i woke up in good health" she replied scratching her head.

"How do you feel waking up alone every morning? no man to kiss good morning or good night. What did i do to you? bring a man home" she barked.

"Mom, are we still on this topic? I will bring a man home when am ready, please understand me" Bari said removing the duvet she covered herself with.

"Look at this old woman talking about "when she is ready" when will you be ready? don't you know you are old? or are you letting your stature deceive you? because you are slim you are now thinking that you are sweet sixteen? bring a man home, Bariludu" the old woman thundered over the phone.

"aaah mommy, but am just 28 na, am not that old" she chuckled slightly.

"I got married to your father at the age of 18 and had you at the age of 20, people even mistake us to be siblings. please, my daughter, bring a man home, even if he is just your boyfriend, bring him home like that let me see him" she pleaded.

"Mommy, i have not seen the right man, when i see him, I will bring him to you fast, i just want to focus on making money for now" Bari replied climbing down the bed, she went to stand in front of the mirror.

"What other money do you need? you are a professional tailor, you are doing well for yourself, remember, no matter the amount of money a woman has, she needs to crown it up with a man"

"yes Mommy, i know, but am not yet rich enough, I still live in a rented apartment and i need a car, you know the state of my health, jumping in and out of commercial vehicles is not good for my health" at this point, she removed the phone from her ear and dropped it on the bed after putting it on loudspeaker.

"God forbid bad thing, so we should wait until you buy a house and a car before you talk about marriage? it's like your senses are not with you. It has been eight years since you parted ways with Rowland, move on, not all men will treat you the way he did" she growled. loudly.

"Okay Mom, we will talk later, i need to prepare for work, i have plenty clothes i want to sew today" she scratched her brows.

"I know you are trying to discharge me, but no problem, we will continue later. Bring a man home"

"Yes Mom, how is Ella doing?"

"Ella is fine, don't worry about her, worry about getting yourself a man, goodbye" the line went dead.

Bari growled slightly, and turned back towards the mirror again. she removed her night dress and stared at her naked body, her hands travelled to her boobs, she cupped them and hissed, doing the same thing to her ass, she hissed loudly again.

"If only God had given me sizeable assets, i would have been happier, just see how straight i am, no nyash, no breast, only me." she shook her head sadly on remembering days in school when her classmates called her "miss bones" yes, that was how skinny she was and when she had met Rowland, two years after she left secondary School, he had told her that her body didn't matter, she felt happy but not until she found out he was cheating on her with a fat girl.

"Such an idiot" she muttered opening the wardrobe trying to pick an outfit for the day. She settled on a floral jump suit, she smiled bringing it out from the wardrobe, gently placing it on the bed, she went to have her bath. Few minutes later, she was out, her body covered with a big brown towel. She applied the lotion on her body, wore her underwears and slipped into the jumpsuit which was sewn by her. She picked up a red hill shoe and wore it at once. Satisfied with the combination, she removed her hair net and touched her hair a bit, picked her bag and zoomed out.

Doctor Daniel Larabee walked towards the door to know who was knocking, he wasn't expecting anyone by that time of the night, he thought. He opened the door but hissed at the person standing outside all dressed seductively.

"What are you doing here, Joy?" he asked not making any move on leaving the doorway for her to enter.

"At least, let me in" she said.

"You are not welcomed here, turn around and go back to wherever you are coming from" he shut the door to her face and was about walking back to his bedroom when the knock sounded yet again. He groaned and angrily matched to the door.

"See, Joy, i had a very hectic day at the hospital today, i handled three surgeries and am very tired, i need to rest" he thundered immediately he opened the door.

"Daniel, please, i know i hurt you in the past but am sorry, i have realized my mistake"

"Just go" he shut the door again and walked back to his bedroom.

Daniel had been the best doctor in Save a Life hospital, after studying abroad, he came back to Nigeria and applied for a job at the hospital, of which he got employed. He was loved by all at the hospital because of his humility, no doctor employed in Save a Life hospital stayed in anything less than a bungalow, but he proved them wrong by going for a one bedroom apartment which was scarcely furnished. His phone rung making him jolt out from his thoughts.

"Hello, nurse Lina" he spoke calmly.

"Hello Doc, come over to the hospital now, the woman in ward 5 is convulsing" the nurse said hastily.

"What of doctor Stanley?" Daniel asked with a sigh.

"He has gone home and we can't reach him on the phone, please come and help her, your house is the closest to the hospital" she said almost out of breath.

"Okay, Lina, i will be right there" he hung and pulled a shirt from his wardrobe, wore it and left.
