The National Union of Road Transport Workers has commended the Federal Government for lifting the ban on interstate travel in the country.

Acting General Secretary of the union, Kabiru Yau, called on the government to subsidise operation cost for motorists.

He said the guidelines outlined by the government for the resumption of operations amid the coronavirus pandemic require operators to carry fewer passengers on each trip, thereby reducing their income.

Yau said, “We thank the Federal Government for lifting the ban; it is a welcome development because it is over three months that our members have been out of jobs and without income.

“At least, our people will now start working and get something to feed their families.

“But at the same time, due to the spacing in the vehicles which will require the drivers to carry only nine or ten instead of the usual 18 passengers, the income of the drivers will be reduced.

“So we want the government to help subsidise the cost of those passengers that we will not be carrying or we will have to increase our transport fares.

“This is because the money that will be generated from the reduced number of passengers will barely cover the cost of fuel for the journey”.

“So, what is the gain? What will you give to the owner of the vehicle? So, the government should please help us look into this matter.”

On maintaining the COVID-19 protocols, he said the union would ensure its passengers obey the use of face masks, sanitisers, amongst others.

It is well. Asking for subsidy will only worsen the situation as government will use the opportunity to steal.

Is it the innocent passengers that caused the pandemic that they always have to pay extra everywhere while getting paid less at work, with some even losing their jobs?

Price of petrol has been reduced and that's a subsidy on its own.
Everyone always thinking of strangling the innocent people

The problem I have with these NURTW people is that they have increased the transport fare due to this reason of reduced passengers in the vehicle, when everything normalizes, they won’t revert the price to the original amount.

NURTW should be considerate of people travelling here and there. The government have done enough by reducing the price of fuel ooo. Nigerians are the problem of Nigeria not the government only, We like taking advantage of anything possible. To travel now will be a big problem again from tomorrow

Nigerians are set of greed bastard people, that any little opportunity they get to oppress others they wouldn't take chances with it. The price for bag of pure water that went up when recession hits the country newly has refused to come down, inasmuch we've countless time been in and out of recession, price of any commodity that goes up remains like that even when such is of no much value anymore. We are 80% of our own problems then the govt is 20%

Nobody has monopoly to everything. As u increase travel fares and cash out, remember u'll use same monies to purchase other products or services at an increased price too. Let's know how far we all can do and undo ourselves

Was there really any ban to start with?

People bribed their way around when moving from one state to another with exorbitant fares.

So which fares are they increasing again?

Especially now the police that eat most from fares would be off the road soon.

This is saddening. The Tf in Lagos is staggering. They use the spacing as excuse to increase fare at first but now hardly will you see them doing spacing but they still collect the same amount of money without spacing.

We all are the same people both government and civilian.

The money they've been making breaking the lock down rules while charging people exhorbitant fare to sneak them out during the lockdown don sweet them.

Putting more hardship on the people. Never wanting to make sacrifices. Its all about gains either by hook or crook

Telling us something that has been done already. All I see in this statement is that they want to make it official.

But you won't blame them though, physical distancing will reduce the number of passengers in the bus.

sad sad

The whole cost of the COVID-19
pandemic is being borne by the
common man & this hypocritical govt
doesn't give a fu©k about protecting them.

The disjointed, uncoordinated & I'll planned policies caused a spike in food prices, transportation, goods & services, which everyone simply pass down to
the common man to bear.

Ministers, governors, security agents etc all got involved in the feeding frenzy on the
common man through the scammish
cash transfers, palliatives , schools
feeding programs & collection of illegal
highway tolls by the various uniformed
arms of government.
