You do know this is about 5% of what the average developer in California earns

Exactly, my first thought was that i should be looking at $5,000 since i am working a backend engineer but i found out that their members are just 7 so i decided to use this to earn more experience..

Let me break it down to you. The average salary of a software engineer in Nigeria is about 200K while in US , it is about $5,000 which is X5 of what a average nigeria software engineer earns.

Before i got the job, i was sure that i should be earning about $2K - $4K but i wasn't able to get that amount instead got $500 which was very disappointing.

Later i cam to realize that it is a new company and they are still recruiting members and also gathering funds to build the company and the product. But i was assured that i will be getting a raise in the few weeks to come.

Believe it or not. I just came to share my experience nothing more..

Have a good day...

Wow...vue.js

Well just try lookin for a job in Nigeria. Although I'm not sure Nigerian developers actually use it (Vue.js) its mostly outdated php

Luckily enough, i got hired as a frontend developer at my former workplace and they used Vue to build their customer products

Hello, I'm an aspiring developer and I've been doing some self-learning. I discovered so many remote opportunities but I don't have enough skills.
Do you mind being my coach?

Thanks, in anticipation

I work for a Californian company too, my work starts at 3:00pm and end at 10:00pm, I have never missed a standup meetings, and I always give an hour heads up if I was ever going to be late for meetings.

One thing my remote team and I agreed on was the time overlap.
So I just go on slack report that I have started working on xyzzy features and by 10:00pm, I go again and tell them what I was able to accomplish and that I'm going to bed. I work as backend using Nodejs and ExpressJs.

EDIT: I saw where you mentioned you earn $500, dude I won't advise you to quit immediately, I would advise you to sharpen your skills and apply to jobs in Australian, Berlin etc. You now have remote work experience.

I've been working remotely for 4 years, my least pay is still $5000. my goal is to hit $10,000 ~ $15,000 per month by 2021 that's why I'm taking algorithm classes.

Sometimes, i look and call myself stupid for accepting such. But Thank God, i had a chat with him and he promised that my salary would increased but not at the moment...

Reason why most of these foreign companies prefer remote workers, they will now have to pay less due to exchange rates and difference in purchasing power.
$500 is a week's average work in the US.
Renegotiate that pay!!!!!

Thanks for the tip.

We had a chat and i explained things to him about my salary and other stuffs, luckily enough he is the fun type of boss. So he agreed with my terms and i will be paid at a much higher price but not at the moment, but in the next few weeks.

They are enslaving you. This is the same people that is shouting Black Lives Matter. You should not be getting nothing less than 3k per month.

Exactly, well said...

Seeing that the company is under development, i didn't want to put the burden of my salary on them so i had a chat with the founder and we discussed about increasing my payment.

After few minutes of convincing him, he agreed on increasing it but in the next few weeks.

$500 is poor, but considering the present economic realities in the country, i think it is managable. Just get the experience, improve your CV and move when a better offer comes. Since the lockdown my sleep pattern changed, i am always up from 8pm to 4am and sometimes 5.00am. Then i sleep from then till 1pm. All i will advice you is adjust your sleep pattern and ensure to sleep minimum 7 hours a day for your organs sake.

Very poor for someone of my skill set.. But still opportunities comes but once so the best thing to do is grab it and hope for the better.

Just out of curiosity. Did you study computer science in the university? I'm currently an undergrad of graphic design at a federal university of technology and while web design/development is actually just a course in my department I'm actually keen on learning it full time. I'm still on HTML and CSS though. What are my chances in the web developer world as a graphic design graduate?

Funny enough, i am in SS3. No computer science degree but i do have lot of certificates . Well, in the web development world, they usually refer to graphic designers as UI designers.

My best advice to you is to pick up UI/UX Design to help you have a higher chance of getting a good well paying job.

Forget that "feeling stupid" thing, you have remote experience now good for your resume and learn how to negotiate better next time.

Find out cost of living in the city where your remote company is based and average developer jobs around there.

I lived in California for 3months+ I survived on $1k per month anything less is just suffering.

well California is massive tbh, I stayed in Palo Alto (rich white people, the only thing cheap is food). Then San Francisco, then Oakland (lots of blacks. I felt a lot better and very affordable too).

I was supposed to visit LA, but my money was about to finish.

I understand that feeling. Palo Alta is a big place and most of my friends stay there but i think it is usually contains Asian-Americans right??

What place would you recommend that is cheaper and affordable to get an apartment which are close to California.

it depends on location, next time I would stay in Oakland fully and take the Caltrain or Bart to Palo Alto and save money on rent.
Although there are some ghetto part of Oakland not too safe but you go dey alright, they mostly steal Amazon packages.

Actually you will see lots of Latinos in California
