Edo election: 35 parties collapse structure, support Obaseki
Published

Peter David, Benin

A coalition of 35 political parties in Edo State on Friday collapsed their structures in support of the re-election of Governor Godwin Obaseki in the September 19 governorship election.

The parties include the Social Democratic Party, Accord Party, KOWA, and 32 others.

Leader of the coalition, Collins Oreruan, who addressed journalists in Benin City, said the 35 registered political parties including those recently deregistered by the Independent National Electoral Commission still have their structures intact.

He said the parties would mobilise their members and supporters to massively support Governor Obaseki to ensure continuity of his developmental strides.

Oreruan said, “We have resolved to advise our governorship candidates to withdraw and join hands with Governor Obaseki to build on the growth, developmental legacies achieved in his first term in office.

“We shall synergise with PDP to mobilise the voters at the grassroots on the reasons why Governor Godwin Obaseki should be returned.

“The governor’s legacies include positive economic development, the industrial revolution, workers’ welfare, security architecture, comprehensive and qualitative educational programmes, development of agricultural value chains, friendly taxes, levies and rates, regime amongst others.”

Oreruan added that the governorship election in Edo State is not about religious titles but the development of the state.

“Our grassroots campaigns shall be issues-based, highlighting the visible projects and programmes of Governor Obaseki, which are devoid of lies, false propaganda, insults and character assassination,” he assured.

Reacting to the endorsement, the state Media Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress for the Edo governorship election, accused the political parties of doing so in exchange for cash payments.

Chairman of the council, Mr John Mayaki, said the ‘motley of parties’ have sold out their platform and done irrevocable damage to their potential for growth in the state by agreeing to offer their support to a widely

“These parties, which ordinarily ought to present themselves to the people of Edo State as viable alternatives to building the necessary followership required for future relevance, have decided to instead cash in on the greed of their leaders and offer their platforms in exchange for an initial down payment of N5m each, and an additional promise of N65m to support a governor widely rejected in his state for his non-performance.

“With this act of betrayal and greed, it is safe to say that these parties have successfully and irrevocably done damage to their integrity and placed a final barrier to any potential for growth and relevance in Edo State.

“It is shameful, and unfortunate, how these persons negotiate with platforms that should contest with the major parties and force through policy changes if at all they cannot, by themselves, form the government in the interim,”

Edo election: Ize-IyamuObaseki in fresh face-off over alleged sponsorship of cultists

Ahead of Edo state governorship election slated for September 19, the camp of Governor Godwin Obaseki who is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his All Progressives Congress (APC) opponent, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, are reportedly engaging in a fresh face-off over sponsorship of thugs, cultists and other criminals.

The Nation reports that Ize-Iyamu on Monday, July 20, at a news conference in Benin, through the publicity secretary of the APC in the state, Chris Azebamwan, alleged that Obaseki was not bothering about campaigns, but was recruiting, training and arming thugs, cultists and other criminals to disrupt the campaign and the election.

Ize-Iyamu alleged: “We are sure you are all aware that the governorship election is only a few weeks away, and for this reason, parties who are partakers in the contest are strategising and developing means to secure victory at the polls.

“Abusing state powers and behaving in a manner already seen since his unfortunate emergence in 2016, Obaseki has begun massive recruitment of thugs and criminals, but this time, officially into government. He disguises these appointments as legitimate in the guise of Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) and Special Assistants (SAs)."

Governor Obaseki, while reacting through his special adviser on media and communication strategy, Crusoe Osagie, accused a philanthropist and a prominent indigene of Edo state, presumed to be backing Ize-Iyamu, of sponsoring confraternity war in the state.

It was reported that Oshiomhole who is the immediate past governor of Edo state made the statement on Sunday, July 19, at his residence in the state.

Ize-Iyamu: ‘I was a member of Pyrates confraternity but I didn’t pour acid on any student in UNIBEN’

Ize-Iyamu says he and other students linked to the incident were rusticated but were recalled after two years.

Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu. denies pouring acid on any students when he was an undergraduate in UNIBEN [thebridgenewsng]
Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the September 19 gubernatorial election in Edo state has denied pouring acid on a fellow student during his undergraduate days at the University of Benin.

In 2016, the former Chairman of the APC and ex-governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole had alleged that Ize-Iyamu poured acid on a student.

Debunking the allegation during an online television programme in Benin on Sunday, July 5, 2020, the politician said contrary to the claim, he drew the attention of the then university management to the plight of the student.

He said despite the fact that he ensured the student got first aid treatment, he and others linked to the incident were rusticated because the identity of the culprit was never known.

Narrating the incident, he said, “When I was in the university, I was a member of the Pyrates Confraternity. At that time, we didn’t look at it as a cult arrangement but some people were already coming in with tendencies to create problems. We had this very confrontational group and one evening, somebody reported to us that they beat up a final year student who was also close to us and they mentioned the names of those involved, and we said no, this is bad.

“Don’t also forget too that I was a students’ union leader, very prominent in the students’ union congress. So, myself and some persons who heard about this complaint said let’s go and see the people concerned and talk to them.

“We went there and met with the people concerned. They opened the door for us and we were discussing the matter under a very cordial atmosphere only for some people to come in and before we knew it, there was smoke in the whole place and somebody shouted acid and was screaming. It was then I realised that somebody has poured acid on somebody and I quickly rushed to the security post. I brought them in and we took the young man to get first aid treatment.

“Of course, the school set up an inquiry, and the person that was affected admitted that I was the one who brought security agents and that I was able to take him in for medical attention. I asked who poured it and he said he didn’t know.

“He said he knew the face but didn’t know his name and nobody appeared to know the name and the university said since you people don’t want to mention the name, we are going to sanction all of you. Before we knew it, they expelled us.

“The reason they gave was that they expelled us for belonging to a proscribed organisation. But the long and short of it is that we were on it for two years till 1986 when the Senate held a meeting and said these guys have been punished enough, that if you look at the records, they were not the one that committed what happened, so, we were called back, graduated and then went to the Law School.”

An old video of the APC governorship candidate in Edo state, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu blasting Adams Oshiomhole in 2016 has emerged.

The 2016 candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for Edo governorship election, vowed to probe the administration of incumbent Governor Adams Oshiomhole if he was elected at the time.

In the video, Ize-Iyamu could be heard urging Oshiomhole to investigate the eight years he (Ize-Iyamu) spent in office as Chief of Staff and Secretary to the State Government.

Speaking during the campaign which at the time held in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of the state, Ize-Iyamu said:

“I call on Adams Oshiomhole to probe my time in government and look at everything that I did.

“Let him do it because by the grace of God, when I am governor, I will probe him. I will probe him; every kobo that has come to Edo State must be accounted for. That is his fear; that is why he can no longer sleep.”

The Chairman of the Edo Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship Campaign Council and Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has urged Edo people to cast their votes for Governor Godwin Obaseki and equally protect the votes in the Sept. 19 Edo Governorship election.

Igbere TV reports that Governor Wike, who spoke at the flag-off of Governor Obaseki’s campaign for re-election, noted: "The All Progressives Congress (APC), for me, does not have any credible candidate. Also, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, according to the sacked National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, is a thief.”

He thanked Obaseki for his “interest in Edo people” which he said made him “fight godfatherism in the state to a standstill.”

"Don't allow your votes to be rigged as APC believes in rigging. I want to assure you this time that this election will be difficult to rig. South-South is for PDP and Edo belongs to PDP. Edo people should not allow Edo to be rigged. I urge you to defend your votes and ensure Obaseki is returned for a second term to continue his good works in the state,” he added.

Wike Campaigns For Obaseki, Says "Today Is The End Of Godfatherism In Edo" by Edo2020: 9:28pm
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has declared that South-South Zone completely belongs to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Igbere TV reports.

According to him, the people of the region will not allow any other political Party to have a foothold in the area any more.

Wike stated this today during the flag-off of the PDP campaign for the September 19 Edo Governorship election held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, in Benin City.

Igbere TV reports that Wike who is Chairman of the PDP National Campaign Council for the Edo Governorship election also declared that “godfatherism is over in Edo.”

“The people of Edo State must reject godfatherism because nobody can rig the September 19 governorship election in the state,” he said.

“Former national Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole is making a u-turn to lick his vomit by presenting a candidate he earlier rejected and castigated.

“Today, we are here to tell the people of Edo State that they should not be afraid because nobody can rig the forthcoming election.

“Today is the end of godfatherism in Edo State. I want to thank Governor Godwin Obaseki for refusing to dance to the tune of godfatherism.”

“Four years ago, Adams Oshiomhole said he cannot trust the APC governorship candidate that he was rusticated from school.

“Today, Oshiomhole is coming back to present the same person to Edo people. He thinks Edo people are fools. I challenge Edo people not to vote any person presented to them by Oshiomhole,” he stated.

Governor Wike assured that as the Chairman of the PDP National Campaign Council for Edo Governorship election, he would be in Edo State during the election to ensure that the state is returned to PDP.

He noted the “outstanding performance of Governor Godwin Obaseki in the last four years in the development of Edo State.”

Governor Wike urged the people of Edo State to come out en masse and vote for the PDP candidate during the election.

“As the Chairman of the PDP National Campaign Council, I will be in Edo State. We will make sure that everything needed will be done to return the state to PDP.

“You should all come out and vote on September 19, and as you vote, you wait and defend your votes.

“Governor Obaseki has done well in the last four years. You should not allow anybody to deceive you again. APC has no candidate. The only person who thinks that the party is running an election is Oshiomhole,” he said.

Also speaking, the Governor of Sokoto State and Chairman, PDP Governors Forum, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal described Edo State as strategic to the nation and called on Edo people to always remain steadfast and resolute.

Governor Tambuwal who took a swipe at former APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole for condemning godfatherism and turning back to practice it, however urged Governor Godwin Obaseki to hold onto God and the people of Edo State to defeat the enemies of the state as he did in Sokoto State.

He also called on the INEC Chairman, Professor Yakubu Mahmoud to build on the legacies of his predecessor, Professor Attahiru Jega who ensured that free and fair election was conducted in Edo State which enabled Adams Oshiomhole to govern for eight years.

Governor Tambuwal also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that his anti-corruption crusade also affects the forthcoming Edo State Governorship election in order to ensure peace and stability in the state.

Presenting the PDP flag to the party's Governorship candidate and Governor of Edo State, the National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus described him as an “accomplished gentleman and performer.”

Prince Secondus who noted that the party is proud of PDP Governors in view of their high standing performance in governance, said they are the reason democracy is thriving in the country.

He stated that “the nation is at a cross road” and appealed to President Buhari to ensure that “free and fair elections hold in the country.”

Responding, the PDP Governorship candidate and Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki said the mandate given to him marked the transformation of the state and Nigeria.

He promised to “sustain the tempo of his developmental strides in his second tenure.”

The flag off was also attended by the Governors of Bayelsa, Douye Diri, Oyo, Seyi Makinde, Bauchi, Senator Bala Mohammed, Delta, Ifeanyi Okowa as well as the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi.

Why Obaseki Was Not Removed As Governor – Oba Of Benin by MRSAWEDOFF: 7:45am

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzL9fuoOV2A

The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, on Saturday, said his prayers sustained governor Godwin Obaseki for four years as governor of the state. He stated this in Benin when governor Obaseki led some governors, senators and other top ranking official of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) to his palace on a courtesy call.

He said: “I remembered when I visited governor Obaseki in his office, he asked me to pray for him to be able to complete his tenure in office. “And I did and today, he has not been impeached despite the ups and downs and I thank my God and my ancestors for answering my prayers.” According to him, plans were on top gear to call the Edo State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs to pray for a peaceful election in the state.

“God and his ancestors have been answering my prayers whenever I prayed and the forthcoming governorship election will not be an exception,” he said. Oba Ewuare II said the Palace was always non partisan, but prayed for the person who has the intention of providing good leadership for the people of the state and create employment “so that the people will be able to put foods on their tables.” Earlier, the National Chairman of the party,

Chief Secondus Uche, told the Benin monarch that they were at the palace to seek his blessings and permission to go on with their campaign in the state. In his speech, governor Godwin Obaseki told the monarch that he decided to visit the palace to seek his blessings before continuing with his campaign. Thugs clash at Oba palace Meanwhile, thugs suspected to be loyalists of All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Ize-Iyamu Osagie and that of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s flag bearer, clashed around the palace of the Oba of Benin on Saturday. It was learnt that there was exchange of gun fire by the loyalists of the duo, leading to destruction of vehicles while several persons sustained injuries.

It was gathered that crisis started when supporters of Obaseki were chanting pro Obaseki slogan while those loyal to the APC candidate, who were at the palace waiting for some APC chieftains allegedly invited to a function at the palace, were also chanting slogans to disparage the governor. It was further gathered that after the governor and his entourage had left the palace, the loyalists engaged in a fight, with the APC – who were more in number – having the upper hand. It was learnt that the loyalists of PDP then ran to the Ogbe Stadium, the venue of the flag off of the campaign and informed their members who stormed the ring road area to engaged the APC supporters.

Source told our reporter that several persons of both side were injured while many vehicles were destroyed. It, however, took the intervention of the police to bring the situation under control.

This is a tactical endorsement and approval for Obaseki continuity, from Oba himself.

This means the Oba is not in support of any form of godfatherism.

Truely Edo is not Lagos.

Unfortunately this is the nation we find ourselves. APC did not need violence to win power in 2015. Unfortunately APC has resorted to violence to remain in power. The election in Kogi introduced a new level to election violence with the alleged collaboration of security agents using helicopters to shoot bullets at voters. In Osun it was money at the polling centers. Edo very likely will witness the mother of all battles as PDP seems prepared now.

The Edo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress has accused the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led Edo State Government of “hatching a plot to illegally detain” Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, a former National Chairman of the party who has joined the campaign for its candidate, Pastor Ize-Iyamu, over “trumped-up charges and a politically-motivated probe” on the eve of the Sept. 19 Governorship election.

Igbere TV reports that the APC also alleged that the Governor, acting through conscripted thugs and cultists, is finalizing plans to set fire on the farm and businesses of billionaire businessmen, Captain Hosa Okunbo, in the State in a bid to coerce him into backing the PDP.

Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon, the Vice-Chairman, Media and Publicity Committee of the APC National Campaign Council, made these allegations in a Sunday press conference in Benin City, monitored by Igbere TV.

He said: “Mr. Godwin Obaseki is also planning to continue his persecution of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole with trumped-up and inconsequential charges at the eleventh hour of electoral politics. Obaseki’s simple plan is to arraign Oshiomhole for a probe that has been revealed as nothing but a targeted political witch-hunt and then deny him bail on eve of election to paralyze the APC.”

“We have also been reliably apprised of the fact that a top security aid of the governor has been frenziedly coordinating different meetings with thugs, cultists, and other agents of state like the discredited politically Wabazigan, a pseudo state police which he has weaponized as a tool of oppression, to devise various demonic plans to ransack the homes of our party members and leaders with the view of destroying their properties and planting incriminating items that would serve as a basis for unjust harassment and illegal detainment.”

“These people, emboldened and funded by our state resources, are also plotting to set fire on the farm of Captain Hosa Okunbo because the Governor believes he is entitled to his support and will see to the destruction of his businesses and reputation if we won’t offer this support.”

Hon. Obahiagbon said the Governor was responsible for the violent attacks in Benin City on Saturday, alleging that he set the thugs on protesters who expressed their rejection of him and his party, the PDP.

He condemned the acts as a show of “desperadoism” and a direct affront on the constitution and rule of law, while appealing to the Police, INEC, and other stakeholders to prevail on the Governor to allow for peaceful conducst of the election.
