I need public opinion on this, please spare me your time.
I currently work in Abuja and my monthly salary is #75k a month, so I recently got another job offer in YOLA #170k a month including accomodation......
I actually asked family and friends for their thoughts and advice on me moving to Yola....and I got a lot of negative feedback. The reply are as follow;
A Male friend: Yola is not a peaceful place, there's insurgency there, and I'm in that stage of my life where I need to start thinking of settling down and this might not bode well for me as I might not want to settle down in Yola...( BTW, I'm a 24yr old female.)
Best friend: I'm naturally an introvert(I'm socially awkward) even in Abuja I don't mingle well, if I go to Yola, my Social life will be dead, I might be living a monk's life and also the issue of insecurity.
Parents: if the place is safe, I should go for it.
Northern Colleague: Yola is a very nice and cool place to live with lower cost of living, but I might find it difficult transitioning from Abuja life to Yola.
Me: I lived all my life in the south, and you know how we have this perception of northern states, the first northern place I've been to so far is Abuja, truth is I don't know how safe Yola town is, I have a colleague who moved to Yola for work, but then she's from there so I can't really compare with her...............I already made up my mind that I was going to reject the offer and keep my job in Abuja while looking out for better opportunities...... HOWEVER, after receiving my salary yesterday and buying food, paying bills and sending money home....I noted that 75k is small sha  (I always know that sha) , and the fact that I've not been getting feed back from jobs I applied for....now I'm having a second though about the offer, should I go?, Should I not go?
BTW, the position will really boost my CV
If you were in my shoe, what are the things you'll consider and what will you do? I'm sure you know the answer. The only question is new place going to be steady in salary payment? Hope they won't be owing |

All the feedback you got from your friends n parents are good feedbacks.. You don't expect to get positive response from all the people you asked. But my humble opinion is this.... If the accommodation for the new job offer is in a safe zone (Definitely its not all places in YOLA that are under insurgency, there are safe places too)... Go for the new job offer but bear it in mind, u re using the new job as a launch pad to get much better opportunity.

In all honesty d pay in those areas are always higher becos they know d first thing dat comes to mind is d insecurity in d region. U arent jus considering d security over there but also d security on those northern roads.... I'm sure there are secure locations in Yola but again d whole choice comes down to U. If you were in my shoe, what are the things you'll consider and what will you do? I will advise you to move to Yola because you will save a lot of money compared to Abuja. Although, the insecurity in Yola is a big issue but Life itself is a big risk. If there is a vacancy there, abeg I need work ooo |

You mean the yola i have lived in for more than 10years is what someone is saying is not safe, bloot of chisos!
Since the inception of insurgency in nigeria more than 10years ago there have only been one bomb blast in yola itself and that occured in 2015, soparadic shootings has never happened in yola.
Local goverment of Adamawa state or better still let me say villages of adamawa state like maiha, madagali, michika e.t.c(those are LGA that share thesame boarder with villages in borno) are what have witness tons of insurgent attack.
There have really been a shallow knowlege of the north from people from the south, and it's pathetic some people just think northerners are some poor, wretched humans.
On the contrary abeg, infact make i no talk....if you know what is called 'best' for you then pick that job jare and do it fast.

If its Yola town itself its still okay, if it were the other local govts closer to bornu then one might be a bit skeptical.
Did a bit of my NYSC in Yola that was around 9 years ago and peeps kept on shouting its not safe , all they watched was aljazeera on that fateful day in January 2012, about shootings in mubi even myself in Yola town didnt know what was happening , some of those we served together are still there, they have gotten married with children they are making it there too.
If you are concerned about social life or meeting a partner, the truth is you can meet your partner anywhere its all about time and chance. Since you are an introvert its all good, Besides Yola is not that far from abuja compared to those of us that travelled from LAGOS .
Once you get married you would be thinking of your family first you can't change jobs within different states just like that, now you are still single make good use of the opportunity.
Yola might be your own land of milk and honey, As long as your accommodation is in a decent area of town you are good to go.
You said its still your company and they got a huge contract and need someone to be there so you are certain they won't owe. You would be spending much less, you would save more and make more investments.
Take the opportunity girl the contract your company got might last just few years.
If I were you I would go for it, I am already in abuja anyway

Had the same fears when I got an offer to move to Maiduguri city 10 months ago. Before then, I have rejected offers offered me by colleagues I ve worked with before. I made enquiries, and took the offer. Wifey cried the day I left home, asking me to come back alive and not leave her and my 10 months baby. Did u know I got to Maiduguri and am still there. However rule no 1 for me is safety. Which means I fly abuja to Maiduguri, when going, and maiduguri Abuja and then took bus to Enugu where my family is. From a personal experience of my stay in Yola for 6 years ( I studied at Federal University of Technology, Yola now Modibbo Adama University of Technology), I will say that if the job offer is in the state capital (Yola North LGA) and other surrounding LGAs like Yola South and Girei LGAs, you should take the offer because those LGAs are very safe and in case of any security breach, you can always find safe places. Yola is a very cool place with a good mix of indigenes and non-indigens and have a relatively balanced religious demography. You don't need much to live a comfortable life as cost of living is cheap and transportation is also cheap. If the offer is in an international organization like AUN or Federal establishments like MAUTECH, career progression shouldn't be a problem but if not, you may have to weigh your options. The career dilemma.
Listening to the opinions of others is a bad idea. Trust me on this.
Deep down, in the silence of your room, what do you want?
Marriage? Solid career? Lots of money so you can gain your financial freedom and retire early?
Forget all the artificial benefits you see in this Yola move. What drives you is all that matters.
If you're passionate about building a career and the firm you're going to work for will add a layer of brand recognition to your CV, then go for it. You can always get better or equal offers in Lagos later.
If starting a family is what you want, then Yola is probably a bad move. I know a few aunties who work in Northern states. They are well past 35; yet no suitors. The universe is a very efficient place. If you want something, you must be where your chances of getting that thing is abundant. Or forget it!
If you loathe poverty and want to quickly raise loads of cash so you can start a business or go back to school to improve your career prospects, then Yola is probably a good move, too. Low cost of living. And zero social activities like parties and weddings where you spend unnecessary money to please people you may not necessarily like.
But in the end, you need to know what you want. What you seek is within! 2 Likes |
