Hello guys, my name is Gabby. I am an avid reader of Nairaland but registered newly in order to share my experience. I would like to share 10 tips with you guys which I think you will find very helpful if you decide to move to Ireland (where I am based) or to a different country abroad… please keep reading and watch the detailed video below where I explained everything.

Listed below are the 10 tips or things I think everyone should consider before they decide to move to Ireland or a different country abroad…

1. Research: the importance of proper research cannot be over emphasized and research is the first thing I chose because this is the stage where you start to think about the school (university, college or institute of technology) you would like to attend, know the course you would like to study and you also want to know if the school is credible and if it is a globally recognised school and all these information can be found on the schools website or if you think that the website is confusing put a call across to the school and get the information you need or better still google the information that you are looking for and I’m sure something will come up.

2. Budget: The amount of money you have set aside for things like tuition, accommodation, transportation and more. Budgeting is important because it allows you to stay within your estimated cost and not to go over it based on the amount of money that you have and the amount of money that you have set aside. You can easily create a budget via excel, Microsoft word or better still the note pad that is on your phone is also a good place to start.

3. Cost of living: it is important to know what the cost of living is like in the country you plan on relocating to. The price varies per counties and cities, so you want to know what it will cost you to live in that city, either school accommodation or off campus accommodation knowing the cost is important and you can also factor that into your budget.

4. Accommodation: when it comes to getting the right accommodation, sometimes you get the best and sometimes you do not. You can start searching for accommodation before going to the country you are moving to. You can google the country you are going to and try to find something that is close to school because this saves you the cost of transportation. And if you do not get an accommodation in time before you resume, you can book a hotel or an Airbnb while you are still searching for your accommodation and always check the school website properly for the section on accommodation.

5. Weather change/clothing: The weather over here hits different and when I say different, I mean the weather is cold and it ranges from -0 to 28 degrees depending on the time of the year. In a country where there is a lot of cold you will need thermal clothes as opposed to chiffon clothes. So, if you are thinking about packing your nice chiffon top or if you have packed it. Take it out of your box and try to find clothes that are thick and if per chance you don’t own any you can budget some amount of money so that when you get to your destination country you can get clothes from the stores over there.

6. Culture change: the Irish culture is way different than the Nigerian culture. In a typical Nigerian culture people are taught to kneel when greeting elders but over here no one kneels, you just say hello to whoever you want to greet and don’t get me wrong guys saying hello doesn’t mean you don’t respect the person it just means that the culture here is not the same as that in the country you are coming from. And also when you enter the bus the driver says hi to you and you say hi to them back and when getting off the bus you simply say thank you or thanks a million because that is what the people over here do.

7. Transportation system: the transportation system here in Ireland is different and it also differs per county. For the county that I live in, we have buses and taxis (inter/intra city) and we also have trains (intra city), the buses and taxis operate in the city and counties while the trains just go to other counties. But in Dublin city they have trams in the city. Also, the payment system is different because you pay with either your leap card (a card that you recharge and just tap when you get into the bus) or you pay with cash.

8. Food: keep an open mind when it comes to the food and if you are a lover of Nigerian food be sure to bring some food stuff with you because buying it here is expensive and you can bring some things that will last you a while before you have to restock. There are African stores and Asian stores and they basically sell anything African from garri to okra, ogbono and egusi even dry fish. But keep an open mind because there are days where you will have to eat chips and chicken and there are days where you eat fufu and ogbono.

9. Jobs: menial jobs are the easiest types of jobs to get here. If for instance you have the mindset that you cannot work as a cleaner or a retail assistant, then I do not know what to say asides bring enough money. The menial jobs are easy to get and they pay good, so pay no mind to what anyone would think or say if it puts food on your table, clothes on your back and pays the bill.

10. Open mindedness: lastly it is important to be open minded because you are going to a country that is probably unknown to you or known to you but either way you want to keep an open mind about everything and you also want to realize that the systems and rules here will be different form the country in which you left.

So, guys, that is all the 10 tips I wanted to share with you guys. Again, if you would like to watch an in-depth video you can check it out on my YouTube channel, I will give a link below.

Thank you so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed it and I also hope that these tips I have shared will be helpful to you or to someone that you know.

The video was very detailed. The research part has to be over-emphasized because many Nigerians don't do their homework before moving abroad, only to regret later. More grace to you.

Bearing in the mind the times we are in, you did not raise any issue on the COVID-19 pandemic as to how it affects the students' chances and expectations. I know most western countries are mindful of who they can allow into their country at this time. Nice points though.

the older you are the less likely one qualifies for 45. Canada PR favours people below 31 32. Add it to your audio travel knowledge lol
