Congratulations on being courageous to release yourself from the golden handcuff.

You can take courses on Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Affiliate marketing.

You can learn copywriting in order to write your own sales pages but don't invest in making a career from copywriting. I'd suggest you delve into the emerging tech fields in order to be strategically positioned in this 4th technological revolution.
I think I also got something from your suggestion above. I have had interest in this data science of a thing. How do I go about it please?
Is there anyway you can help?
I really need your help on this please, this is my whatsapp number or drop yours for me 07088136002

OP,

I understand exactly how it feels as someone who's had similar experience with a leading bank in Nigeria too. Although, I started and finished my 5 years banking career as a contract staff in a very Okay department but the story is very much alike bcuz contract jobs are dead end jobs... At least in Nigeria.

Since you've got businesses to pay your bills, I think you're well placed to horn a skill, and there's nothing stopping you from delving into IT if that's what you want.

I will suggest a few that might not take much of your time to learn...and top of my list is Database Administration. You can Google what it takes to be a database administrator to get started.

Another one that might appear slightly easier is to learn UI/UX. It means user interface and user experience. This skill is good for people who are naturally good designers.

There's also frontend web developer and back-end web developer.... And over time you can up your game and become a full stack developer (that's for someone who has a combination of frontend and back end skills).

Those are like the easiest I know of but the big fish in IT will require lengthy time and resources to be market ready. Those are software engineering and development (cross platform), Business analytics (i.e as a data scientist), Artificial intelligence and robotics, and so on.

Am on course to becoming a frontend developer myself and I can tell you it's not been easy. It requires extraordinary courage and zeal to remain focused while learning online on your own without being pressured by anyone.

@OP,

Pls keep me posted on what you finally settled for and I won't mind if we can create a group or community of IT enthusiasts who are coming into the field as newbies. This is to encourage each other and learn from the group as well as creating a healthy competition to spur us on.

Lemme know what you think about it.

Feel sorry for you bro,

I worked as a teller/ cashier too for like a year before I ran away albeit not a Nigerian bank tho.

Anyway pls help me bro, which banking software are you familiar with or do you know any micro finance sql softwares that you probably used for 10 years which enabled you to help customers withdraw and deposit thier money.

Also during the 10 years was your till ever over or under ( cashier language ) grin

Anyway pls I’m asking for this banking softwares because I plan of launching an electronic online bank and the softwares my old bank used to keep customers information is not available in Nigeria

With regards to your progress in life, it’s crazy how you were just busy counting money for 10 years at the till with no prospect of moving upfwards. Even if there was no vacancy at least there could have been a loans department within your bank, direct debit or standing order department where you should have been promoted to to learn one or two

It’s strange your operational manager saw you on the till for 10 years and left you there this life no balance then tbh

I beg to defer. You must have joined the bank as a contract staff, that was the mistake you made.

I have a friend that moved from access bank to Microsoft another one moved from gtb to Deloitte, both of them are IT expert, they joined as ET. Self development is very key, you cant be in a place for 10yrs without adding value to yourself and expect miracle to happen.

It's never too late bro. I wish you well in you next move.
.

what is ET please?

I wholly agree that it was a total waste of time being a teller for 10 yrs! Im sure it was
A contract position. Being a banker even as a full time staff isn't funny. As a full staff the money to easily pay bills is there, but you are constantly very busy, very stressed with high job uncertainty. - it's not an interesting life at all.
If one will choose banking one must think of these and be confortable choosing of all that.

@OP: There is nothing for you in the oil sector right now. the most viable self employing skills now are in IT- programming, graphics design, animation, social media content manager, data analytics. Then also photography, shoe making, fashion design, interior decoration, furniture making, poultry, fish production.
Programming is really good if you can handle the thinking involved and also the time commitment it demands.
But most important factor is viability where you are and your interest. Whatever it is you must be ready to learn well and produce quality work.
why do you say nothing in the oil sector

Hi all, moderator pls help me push to fp. I need good advise like badly.

I joined the banking system about a decade ago. Young and naive. I got carried away by thier flashy suits and top tech phones.
The moment I entered I realized all these was a scam. Those suits you see are being paid for, installmentally for 3months. The phones in 6 months etc Bankers are one of the least paid professions today considering the amount of time they put Into thier work (7am to even 10pm) and the level of risk they are subjected to. The sad thing about working for a Nigerian bank is once u leave, u realize that you can't use the skill elsewhere. You are technically back to square one.

This is my case. I spent the last decade of my life working in a financial institution as a teller. Quite wastful considering the fact that I know nothing other than counting money for customers. I worked for 7days in a week. 10yrs passed In a flash. No time to even get additional qualifications.

Before joining, my friends adviced me against it, but coming from a humble background the need to get independent fast was more appealing. Why I stayed so long is a topic for another day (have you heard of employment fraud) anyway,
I left last week and I can say I am happy I finally got a chance and time to learn any new trending knowledge and I am prepared to start afresh. I will be 35 this year. With a background in construction mgt I thought of copywritting, digital marketing etc but I love to learn technical stuff.. Pls advise if any. I know IT related careers will sell here and abroad.

I've thought of programming, cloud tech, data tech etc.

Please I need your advice, which path should I follow now that at the age of 40 I will regain all the time I lost in the banking field.

I can get an MSc but I want a high income paying skill that the likes of the oil majors wouldn't mind employing even at my age or if I am to be self employed I can be distinctive in that area.

Niaralanders, pls help a brother

All I.T Skills are lucrative at any time, but the challenge is you must be well trained to be at least a Professional before seeking employment.
I don't know of any real I.T Pros who doesn't earn 7- 8 figures yearly.

I'm sure you'll wonder who is a Professional as many always claim they are one.

The I.T levels (According to me)
.

1. Associate (More like a Beginner) in Nigeria most at this level doesn't have a chance at all, because the competition level is high.

2. Professional (A good level to seek employment) This level proof you have 3-5 years experience on the subject matter (though you don't really need to spend 3-5 years in training).
3. Expert (Consultants) It means you are authority in your choosen field.

Pls whatever I.T skills you later want to settle for, just don't waste your money on quickies (2 wks or 1 month) training.
Get Trained by the Pros It maybe time consuming but the reward his high.

Stay Blessed!!!

Bro, I'm at that beginners stage and I understand there's no cutting corners in IT bcuz it's a competence based field. Hence I agree with you 100% that one needs to be trained by experts who are established in the field and more like being mentored all through.

The challenge for many who fall in my category has been getting a lead who's ready to sacrifice little of their time for newbies like me albeit their very busy schedules. My mentor in the field I currently in Malta where he works as an expatriate.

If you know any Nairalander who can be my guide on this path, plz refer me.

Thank you.

Thanks I appreciate.. My position wasn't contract. I and my peers had just 2 promotions in 10yrs.am comfortable but career dead

Your position wasn’t contract, then what?
As a full staff of Executive Trainee position, your take home is about 170k. You mentioned your colleague who got promoted twice in 10 years and if it’s a proper promotion (without notch), that means he/she was promoted to ABO/ABE/SE (all second level depending on the bank) or BO/BE (3rd level) and the salary of an ABO/ABE/SE is between 360k-380k depending on the bank and for BO/BE, about 400k-420k.
So tell me, how are bankers not well paid. Any banking salary less than 100k is contract. Some banks have made it appear like it’s not contract whereas they are not directly employed by the bank, rather vendors. The contract marketers earn salary plus commission on deposit.

A teller of course is not a banker, neither is HR staff,Fincon,Audit,Internal control or Admin services staff. They are all routine jobs so dont let the lad feel worse. He probably worked in Zenith bank where University graduates are deployed as tellers too and they weren't contract staff.
The term banker in western world is actually meant for treasury/trading guys and investment banking staff.I got the rude shock when I got a placement in Deustche Bank then. I was told I will be in a support team(AML/Compliance) as I haven't got banking experience going through my resume.I retorted I have done 7 years already high flying in departments like Trops,Fincon etc Those had no meaning to them really
It was quite a bitter pill.

And you failed to make a contact list in 10years. You failed in your own respect too, don't blame the bank alone.
You may commit to a data analytics career. You can gain employment in almost any sector.

Thanks for this detailed explanation. It was until this year that I discovered that most Software Engineers in Banks are employed by big tech vendors who have signed agreements with the bank, so the employees are directly under those vendors on contract. Quite weird, that alone is a red flag for me.

I also found out recently from a GTB staff that you get promoted every 4 years as GTB staff. Maybe she was lying, maybe not.

All in all, 360k-380k is a good income if growth is allowed, but promotion twice in 10 years feels like Israelites in the land of Egypt.

FellaG, there is no roadmap to success. There is no trending IT skill that will automatically lead to success. It is the same mistake u made 10 years that you might make again, God forbid. Because ten years ago u were should I say seduced by bankers image and lifestyle, now u are asking to be influenced into picking up an IT skill. What u don't know is that success is all by the grace of God and what u are destined to be. There is one thing bros, at least one thing u can do very well right from when u were a teenager. One thing that even if they wake u in the middle of the night u will do it effortlessly. Now I don't know what it is, it could be u take amazing photos of people and things, it could be u make people laugh just by talking, it could be u are a great cook, it could be whenever something is faulty u identify the faults and fix it at least to the best of ur ability, it could be u have sweet mouth that is u can convince people, it could be u have great fashion sense. It could even be that you are skilled at sniffing out business and money making opportunities. The thing is you and only u know what you're extremely good at, it doesn't have to be a skill but just a passion or intuition that u can build upon and develop. People who are great, as in great at what they do actually ENJOY doing it and not just for the money in it.

Bank job isn't the least paying job, how many engineering companies except the "multinational" and "oil and gas", pay a graduate trainee above 100k, most are between 60 and 100k. If you are employed as a graduate not a teller(contract), you are paid at least 120k as a staff, but as a teller you are under a contract and your salary doesn't go beyond certain point irrespect of the time you put in and it can't be compare to those employ as a full staff.

The disadvantage of working in a bank is they be can sacked at anytime and it become worst when you didn't study anything related to the banking sector because the esperience you get can't be use elsewhere, and it consumes most of your time.

Is a doctor useful outside the hospital? Or is a lawyer useful outside legal duties? Except they work in a designated unit in another sector. This is where some “bankers“ have an edge. Why would anyone be useful outside the bank because they can count money or fill account opening forms?

Someone said a HR is not a “banker“, but a HR can have opportunities to function in HR units across sectors. Same way a core staff can jump from one bank to another. The ones with meaningful experience or skills enter some private organizations to assume supervisory roles. Ex-bankers should stop demonizing the industry that gave majority of them hope and money to buy their first set of good-looking clothes and cars.grin
