Hello fellow dog lovers,

This thread started with Juno when she was 6months old in July 2020.

Now thread is being modified as Juno now has a kid sister and playmate Venus (a 1 month NSD)

Follow up to where you meet Venus.

So here goes the diary:

Juno is a 6months+ female Rott Mastiff.

She is,

Very confident
Well socialised: not unduly aggressive to strangers and other dogs
Highly mentally alert
A lover of grooming and bathing
A lover of road trips
A lover of good food

Talking about foods,

Bread/yam and egg with hotdogs
Indomie crayfish and eggs
Rice and shredded chicken
Fish and chicken entrails
Assorted brands of canned dog food
Milk
Yoghurt

She has a teddy partner Fifi.

She sleeps in the sittingroom but likes being out during the day on the balcony.
She loves action movies too.

OK so, I'm looking forward to meeting someone here with a healthy male purebreed Bull mastiff for crossing from around December thereabout.
Also looking forward to helpful comments/ tips.

Aiit. Let's go.

Thanks

Thank you very much

Now:

- She sits to wait for her food.

- She eats neatly from her plate. No remnants on the floor.

- She even knows when I start cooking.

- She enjoys her baths. Once I pick brush, soap and towel she's happy.

- She goes on walks with me without her leash. She just simply walks and runs along depending on my pace. She doesn't mind other dogs or animals around she just moves on.

- She knows the way home from Abuja-Kaduna expressway (our house in the estate is less than 10minutes leisure walk from the express).

Here, she's saying thanks for a delicious meal.

Please anyone rendering stud services in Kaduna or Jos kindly buzz me. Pure breed male bull mastiff only please.

Juno will be ready by December 2020/ January 2021.

Thanks.

OK. It's a tough love approach.

We both needed to build trust on walks.

No shouting or dragging when using the leash at first.

Sometimes I will lead sometimes she will lead. I let her lead atimes to see how familiar she is with any terrain.

For instance we both did a 1,503ft hike up Mount Patti on a Sunday morning in Lokoja, Kogi state. She was on leash. She did great.

I let her feel the wind, step in puddles, smell grass etc. Then I say firmly, "Juno focus.. Walk with me". She will look at me and we continue.

In recent times, I just whistle a unique tone I have been getting her used to. She hears it and we are back on track.

Concerning animals like goats, chicken etc she will initially get excited and want to give a chase. I watch the moment her attention shifts from me. And reinforce her focus as done earlier.

In case of other dogs, we don't increase pace, we instead slow down. Sometimes we stand to study the other dog's reaction.

She has a strong personality so sometimes she will turn face me and sit with her back and tail pointing to the other dog. Until I give the next command.

Above all, I don't encourage people calling her or making barking sounds at her while on walks. It helps keep focus and reinforce her allegiance and loyalty to the line of command.

I'm still learning too. I have been reading a lot. So I'm enjoying the process.

That's not to say she doesn't exhibit her other side which is immense strength, playfulness and stubbornness for a 7month old Rott Mastiff.

It appears you have put in a lot of hard work into training her and now reaping your rewards.
Keep it up.

Your dog looks great and I love the way you trained her, wish I could walk with mine on no leash, but people will be running unnecessarily and also when the panic he becomes somehow aggressive... but he is cool when you pet him..

Juno looks loved and cared for. Because of this you should allow her develop fully before you start crossing her. Large dogs take 18 - 24 months, do not be in a hurry and cross her at her first heat, you will stunt her growth.

When you look at most female dogs on nairaland, they look smallish and malnourished because the owners rushed in crossing them to cash-out. You can rarely see good looking females like you see males. Allow your dog develope fully.

Wow..

Thanks for this. A lot of people (friends, family, neighbours and admirers) dozens of contacts collected during walks.

All waiting for puppy alert.

I felt so too about the timing. But the pressure now is something else.

Someone even called from Jos to sell me a male bull mastiff yesterday evening.

Please more of these helpful comments are needed. I don't know it all.

Thanks so much.
