Dear authors, I know that majority of us want to have our works read while making a few bucks in the process. That is a fair deal but on Okadabooks, there is no such thing as making money. Before I go on to explain, let me tell you how other book publishing platforms like KDP, Smashwords and Draft2digital work.

On these platforms, they have millions of readers surfing their sites and hunting for books. You can literally make a lot of money without spending a dime on ads as long as your cover, description and keywords are good enough. In exchange for giving you the opportunity for using their platforms, they take 30% of your sales as their share (on average). Ladies and gentlemen, if you make #100,000 on a site without adverts and they take #30,000 out if it, I believe it is fair. Also, if you make just ten naira on these websites, they will give you your 7 naira at the end of the month.

Now let's look at Okadabooks. Go and hire the best graphics designer for your book cover, use the catchiest title and buy an editor for your book, you will make a whopping one thousand Naira if you are very very lucky. And that one thousand Naira usually doesn't come from their so-called 300,000 readers. You have to go to facebook, IG, twitter, etc to get your customers, take them to Okadabooks (thereby bringing new customers to Okadabooks) and then dash them 30% of your earnings (the same cut mega sites like Amazon charge) while their so-called 300,000 customers look almost exclusively for free books.

Now, you may think this is still somehow fair but here is the issue: Okadabooks will say that you must make up to 10,000 Naira before you can withdraw (in contrast to other sites that pay you no matter what you earn). Now, 10k is not a very big amount of money but on Okadabooks, it is extremely a herculean task. Everything that you make before you reach that #10,000 goes into Okadabooks bank account (in addition to their 30% cut). They only pay you If you reach their 10k limit.

Now let me tell you what the trick is. When you consistently publish books for months and months without even reaching five thousand naira, you will get tired and give up. Once you give up, Okadabooks gets to keep everything that you have earned while you go home with nothing.

Why am I writing this? It's because I have been a victim and I know so many other victims too even here on nairaland.

I have been regularly publishing since November and even under pricing books (#50-100) just to attract readers but the truth is, there are very few readers on Okadabooks. I had to get my own readers. From November to July, I have not made up to 4k. I never had issues with this but this is what broke my patience;

Fidelity bank kept my 20k after a failed transaction two days before Sallah. Broke and hopeless, I decided to appeal to Okadabooks to give me even if it is just 2k so that I will not go penniless on Sallah day. These people simply ignored my messages. Till date, fidelity bank is yet to give me back my money and Okadabooks is still ignoring my pleas.

I have decided to give up on the site (Of course, they will buy suya with the 3.5k I made from their 300,000 ghost readers) but please, if you are not willing to advertise or write free books then stay away from these leeches . You won't make much from them and the little you make will go into their bank account while you go home with nothing. I have a friend that has 50 books (including novels) with them but he still hasn't crossed 8k on the site.

Wow!!!
And to think I've been trying to publish my book on okada books but was a bit put off with the prices I see on those books, ₦50, ₦100 and most are even free , was really curious on how these authors make their money or they just want to get their names out there.
And that led me to search reviews on Google with nairaland as reference and now I'm really surprised.

My sister if you want to see a lot of sales, (as in 2-6 salesgrin), you must charge within that range. Even #200 is a no-go area. If you want to build your name then you have to make your books free. That's the only way to get a lot of readers on Okadabooks.

I advise you publish your book on your website or Amazon because even if you make something on Okadabooks, you will only be a slave to them. At the end of the day, they will get EVERYTHING you have earned unless you miraculously reach their 10k limit.

There is no doubt that OkadaBooks is a complete scam and Nigerians and the entire world should stay away from them.

Nobody ever makes money on OkadaBooks. Please all Nigerian writers, stop publishing your books on OkadaBooks because you're only enriching a few greedy and selfish people. They will never pay you whatever you earn. The OkadaBooks platform is not built to make you earn money. It's only built to enrich their pockets at the expense of writers.

They are a bunch of greedy, selfish and wicked people there at OkadaBooks.

Don't publish your books with OkadaBooks and if you have already published your book with them, go right now and remove your books from their website because they're a complete scam.

Go for a more transparent and honest platform such Amazon, Smashwords, etc. Don't ever contemplate publishing your books with OkadaBooks because they're just reaping off Nigerians.

It is just unfortunate that we have no one to save us from them. The main idea behind using that minimum amount is to keep all the royalties when an author inevitably gives up (how many writers can consistently publish for 2 years just to earn #10,000).

Just check the works of some talented Nairalanders on Okadabooks. Brilliant stories that should generate no less than a 200k in an ideal situation are struggling to make #2,000. As if it isn't enough , the authors get frustrated and leave without a kobo while Okadabooks keeps 100% of your profits.

Is Amazon a good site to publish and earn as each readers read?

Exactly. It's a little competitive but as long as you have a good book with good blurb, you will most likely make 10x more than you can make on Okadabooks and they pay you monthly no matter what you earn

I think the main issue with OkadaBooks is that there's no competition.

If someone like me, who's just starting out launch a competition to correct many of this anomalies, will publishers use it?

Most people only go for the big brands. They don't want to use smaller brands - even if it is better.

You see, personally, I have money stucked in many places over the internet because I couldn't reach the payout before quitting. So, nowadays, that is one of the criterias I check before joining any platform.

I think you're being unfair.

What okadabooks promises is a platform.
Okadabooks did not promise that they will force people to buy your book.
Create a sellable product, and it will move by itself.

If the Content you put on the platform is not selling, or you do not know how to market what you're selling, you have no one to blame but yourself.

At this point, what we should ask is why, if you are a writer, and you have poured out from your mind enough to fill the pages of a book, and then you put the said book on Okadabooks, and after five months, your so-called wonderful stories have not made up to ten thousand naira.

What did you write in your book?
What did you say, and how did you say it?
If it is not catchy, if it is not selling, the fault is from you.

I enjoy okadabooks, and I buy books there on a regular basis. So why did I not see your own and buy?
Is your book well written, well edited, and well packaged?
I know authors, some of whom are my friends, who make good sums of money off the stuff they put on okadabooks.

Guy, wetin you dey write?

Have you spent up to 10k on OkadaBooks? Because if you purchase books regularly on OkadaBooks and haven't spent up to that, you just confirmed one of OPs point.

Also, not making a sale does not necessarily mean he's not writing good contents. Rather, many people prefer to read a good portion of a books content before purchasing.

All the books I have purchased on OkadaBooks so far were half read somewhere else.

Like, some authors share a good portion of their story here, get you hooked, then stop posting and ask you to go get the rest on OkadaBooks, Or they post too slowly that you just have to go get the rest.

So, it's not necessarily about OP's content but probably his marketing strategy.

Also, while it might be easier for some people to reach the withdrawal limit of 10k, probably because they are already a well known author or have good marketing strategy, there's nothing bad if the minimum withdrawal is far lesser. Like say 500 or 1k.

Even fiverr that the minimum you can charge for a project is $5 allows you to withdraw as little as $1.

Putting minimum withdrawal at 10k is just a means to get authors to keep posting and marketing (driving people to the website). Many people will never reach that point before quitting.

I have a simple solution for this argument. I challenge you and every other person that disagrees with me to open Okadabooks app and click on any category. You will keep scrolling and scrolling for ages before you find any PAID book that has up to 20 reads. Just go there and check. You can't tell me that 99% of the authors on Okadabooks are not writing great stories.

Also, my main problem with the site is not the fact that I'm not making big sales. My problem is their use of limits. Why make #10,000 the minimum amount one can withdraw when you know that the vast majority of authors don't make half as much as that (even if they all write bad books)? Mind you, it is with these same bad books that my fellow okadabooks author once made it to the top 100 bestsellers on amazon's BDSM erotica niche. Do you think Nigerians are better judges and critics than the whites?

It's simply a way to keep all of our royalties when we eventually give up (just like I have) after publishing more than 30 books on the site. You know what? On the top of this very section, there is a thread where authors on Okadabooks are dropping the links to their books. Why don't you go and look how their books are faring? Is it likely that all of them have bad books?

If there are too many bad books on your site and the bad authors are not making enough sales, then reduce the minimum amount so that the bad authors can eat as well instead of punishing them with slave labour. Why keep their money even if they are no longer interested in using your site to market their bad books?

Does it not surprise you that books from someone as accomplished as Chimamanda Adichie haven't generated up to 1 million naira on the site while the same books have netted more than a million dollars on Amazon alone?

I admit that I sound like a sore loser, but just take your time and conduct a survey for authors on Okadabooks or simply explore the various categories in their site

Guy, you have done your best by freely speaking your mind and sharing your thoughts with us here, with the simple intention of letting us see the downsides of trying to sell on Okadabooks.

It's now left for any reader to decide to filter the information you have shared and learn a lesson or two from it without judging or criticizing you for being open.

The first time I read through their guidelines, I also wondered why there had to be a threshold of 10k. But I just felt that their reason of minimizing bank charges was reasonable enough.

However, some of the reasons you have stated like keeping you on the queue so that you can keep advertising and driving readers to their site is quite understandable and very possible.

Honestly I once thought of the idea of creating a book download site were upcoming writers can upload their works for FREE and also readers can download for FREE.

Nobody gets to make money you only gain publicity.
For me the owner, I will finance it from my pocket or maybe free will donations.

BUT

I know people are only writing for profit. So I shelved the idea and decided not to waste my money on hosting and domain.

This is serious.

Bank charges should be taken from the author's royalty before they send the money to him.

You have no business keeping someone money in this age other than keeping it for a time incase there's a need for refund.

Amazon that is an oversea company and probably should have a higher bank charge still manage to send your N500 earnings to your account after deducting their charges.

If they do that, what excuse does Okada books have? Especially one in the same country as the author.

Bunch of thieves.

Thank God I never considered publishing any of my books with them

I have decided to give up on the site (Of course, they will buy suya with the 3.5k I made from their 300,000 ghost readers) but please, if you are not willing to advertise or write free books then stay away from these leeches . You won't make much from them and the little you make will go into their bank account while you go home with nothing. I have a friend that has 50 books (including novels) with them but he still hasn't crossed 8k on the site.
Wooh! This is insightful.
I don't write for a living but I'm
an avid reader of functional and topical books.

I've written for the Web from as
far back as 2001, so I know that
generating original content is key. This doesn't come easy because
of writer's block, so I can feel your sense of disgust here.

The guys at Okadabooks have
to change their business model
ASAP and adopt the global standard for the benefit of all.

It is unkind that the so-called
Web traffic on their site isn't
converting to real monetisation
for the authors, and when it
does, authors can't withdraw
unless they reach a reach a
minimum threshold... SMH.

Cheers.

People deserve to be paid fairly for their creative works. It's good you folks have got alternative options for publishing your works. smiley

Way to go!

Mention the names of those your friends. I'm 100% with OP.

Op is so right. Okadabooks frustrated me...i got to N7, 000 books sold and my books just stopped selling. After a year, I just used the 7k to buy books of Nairaland authors on their platform and removed all my books from the platform.

Really really surprised!

I read somewhere that their minimum withdrawal limit is now ₦5000.

How true is that?

According to okadabooks, the reason why they don't make withdrawal limit as low as ₦1000 is because they want to avoid unneccessary bank charges.

Makes a little sense, or don't you think so?

I want to withdraw sharperly.

So I shelved the idea and decided not to waste my money on hosting and domain.
so You Expect Me To Write A Book for Two, three Years And Put It For Free Online. Do You Know What It Means To Write An 80k words Novel?

Instead Of You To Think Of How To Help Nigerian writers Make Money, you Want To Make Them Post Books For Free. Abeg Keep Your Idea
