In the area of borehole construction, it is very wrong and wasteful for prospective clients to engage the services of quacks in a professional field like borehole construction. Most people engage plumbers who in one occasion or the other seen where borehole is being drilled, and thereafter claims to be borehole drillers which in turn creates problem as a result of failure in service delivery. There are a lot of conditions and factors that contributes to borehole failures, collapses and drawdown which only a professional hand can ascertain and handle. Key Steps of a Successful Borehole Installation

Siting – includes desk study, field reconnaissance, and surveys to asses the following: sufficient yield for the intended purpose, appropriate water quality for the intended purpose, avoidance of potential sources of contamination, proximity to the point of use, accessibility for construction / drilling team, need for an abstraction licence and avoiding other groundwater sources.
Choosing construction methods – Proper specification of well depths, correct drilling rig specification. The drilling technology used needs to match the borehole design
Design & Construction – Ensuring the well is fit for purpose e.g. yield, diameter, depth, casing and screen, gravel pack/formation, appropriate well construction / development, pumping test and water quality analysis.

Water Treatment – In some cases groundwater may require treatment to bring it up to the required standard for its intended use. Skybound carry out full water analysis and testing and then install a water treatment system to remove the offending substances.

Well, the diagram represents the soil formation and profile of the vertical electrical sound point.
If you look at the data on the diagram, you will observe the values as stated above, 1346.86^m, 663.81^m, 145.54^m, then 111.62^m
1346.86 is high and has no water potential at all,
In 666.81, the value reduced showing the closeness to fractured area.
Then data 145.54 shows the water potentiality of the area.
Note: shale is a type of soil that has no water potential meaning that terminating the borehole at a shale formation will absolutely yield no positive result.
Therefore, based on the established data, it is advisable to drill the borehole and terminate at 60m depth unless the formation proved otherwise.

The person who did this survey says that water is difficult to get but that we'll need a wider bore at even extra cost (between 6 to 8 inches) to give me a 50% chance.... I'm perplexed.

Like I said earlier, shale formation is a very difficult formation in borehole drilling and as a matter of fact has no water potential. However, the information on the survey report show water potential between 40-60m depth. The surveyor therefore would've spread to at least 200meters to know if there are possibilities of having another fractured basement underneath.
Nevertheless, using 6-8inches diameter casing pipes won't do much if there are no sustainable fractures in the borehole.
