Episode 3 - Best Dad Ever

Dele smiled as he stared down at his wrist. The children- Temi, Tomini and Chris- had gifted him a bracelet they made themselves. The white beads with black letters were stringed to read: D.D THE BEST DAD EVER.

He never thought he'd ever live to see the day his children would calling him Daddy. His mum used to say all things worked together for good. He didn't believe that phrase when Tinu relapsed into her depressive psychosis last year.

He would never forget the fear in Temi's voice as he sobbed into the phone. He had been in a meeting when the call came in. He had almost declined the call from Tinu but something urged him to pick it.

Picking the call and hearing Temi's terrified sobs had caused his brain to go zero to hundred in a micro-second. Temi had complained that their mummy was acting weird, that she was acting like she didn't know who he and his siblings were. He'd said she'd been screaming that they should stop calling her mummy and that she didn't know them, and she was asking them where her mum and dad were.

The scenario Temi painted was so similar to what had happened when he visited Tinu in prison. He had adjourned the meeting and jumped on the first flight to Abuja. He also called AJ to get to the kids immediately before Tinu did something dreadful to them.

Tinu had to be checked into a mental institution in Lagos. The children were on holiday and Ajiri was busy planning a continent wide tour for an artiste of her record label. Having to watch six children would be ardous and draining.

He had to move to Abuja to take care of them. They had gotten the chance to bond and he had the chance to prove that he was a father who loved them.

It had been challenging and there had been ups and downs. There had been times they had told him point blank they didn't like him and they wanted their mummy.

Somehow, with all the fights and clashes, there had been rewards.

He'd never forget the day Tomini and Temi approached him with a big request that almost knocked his world off its axis. It was shortly after Tinu got discharged from the hospital and they had come visiting him in Lagos.

Dele typed on his laptop, the clacks of the keyboard and the hum of the freezer punctuating the silent room. He had just tucked the kids in after a long day of chores and crosschecking assignments. Sleep drew his lids down and his hands slowed. He shook his head and reached for his mug of coffee.

What was the point of coffee if he was still going to get sleepy?

He chugged the black liquid and set it down. The tap of the ceramic cup against the glass table top was followed by sound of a shuffle and pushing. He heard muttering. He became alert as sleep vanished from his eyes.

"Let's go nau." Tomini's voice said from the dark corridor.

"I'm scared. What if he gets angry?" Temi responded.

What were they talking about? And why were they awake?

"Temi and Tomini, what are you doing awake?"

He called and they shuffled out of the dark with their heads bent.

"What are you doing awake by this time?" He asked and glanced at the clock on the taskbar of his system.

22:35

"It's to eleven." He said and turned to face them.

Tomini was the first to look up. "We," She started and turned to Temi. She jabbed him with her elbow and he looked up. "We had something to ask you."

"It's more like a request." Temi interjected. "We are not demanding." He bent his head again in fear

Tomini twiddled her hands and said, "We asked mummy and she said we should ask if you'd be okay with it."

He nodded. "Okay. What is it?"

Temi looked up and shook his head, "If you don't like it, we won't do it."

Tomini nodded in agreement. "Yes. If you don't want us to, we won't."

"Okay?" He drawled in confusion. What did they want to do? "You still haven't made your 'request'"
He air quoted the word he borrowed from his son.

"Well," Temi started looking at Tomini.

"We were wondering," Tomini continued and cringed, "if we could call you Daddy."

She clamped her eyes shut, probably waiting for him to decline their request.

He stood there shocked as Tomini's words rang over and over in his head. Fireworks went off in his heart as his finally processed her words.

His children finally saw him as a father.

He was no longer Uncle Dele to them.

This was the best day of his life.

"I told you this was a bad idea." Temi said to Tomini and gloom painted their faces.

"No, no, no, no, no, no!" He cried and jumped out his seat. "It's not a bad idea." He picked their hands and led them to the sitting room.

He sat on the couch and placed them on each of his laps.

"I want you to call me Daddy." He put in as he rubbed their backs.

"Really?" They both asked with their eyes threatening to pop out of their sockets.

He nodded and smiled at them.

"Really."

"Wow! That's great. You know we were really scared you wouldn't want us calling you Daddy. I've wanted to call you Daddy for a long time but I was scared. And then we asked mummy if we could, but she said only you could make that decision. We wanted to ask you but you travelled." Tomini chattered.

"I'm so glad." She continued and wrapped her arms around his neck. "I love you, Daddy."

His heart soared with those four words. That was the first time he ever heard those words from his daughter.

"I love you, ." He choked out with tears pricking his eyes.

"I love you, Daddy." Temi said, smiling.

"I love you, too, Temi." Dele said and pulled his son in for a hug.

If he died right now, he'd die a happy man.

His children saw him a father and one they loved. What more could he ask for?

Tomini pulled away and a frown marred her face.

"What is it?"He asked in fear. Did she change her mind already?

God, please, don't let her change her mind.

"Daddy, it will be weird if we call you Daddy and Chris and Reggie call you Uncle Dele." Tomini said.

Temi pulled away too and a similar frown appeared on his face.

"Tomini is right."

Tomini thought for a bit and smiled, "What if we all call you D.D.. Short for Daddy Dele. You see, it's Daddy and Uncle Dele put together. Then we can call you that."

Temi smiled and nodded. "It's a pretty cool name." He chuckled at Temi's attempt to sell him the name.

"Alright. Fine by me." He laughed out.

They squealed and hugged him again. His heart expanded with joy so much that he felt he'd burst with joy.

"We love you, D.D." They said together.

"I love you both, too. You're the best thing that ever happened to me." He said and carressed their heads.

They pulled away smiling.

"Why don't you go to bed?" He said and they nodded.

"Night night, D.D." They chorused and left.

"Night night."

Tomini returned seconds after and placed a kiss on his cheek.

He had called everyone that mattered and told them of the new development in his relationship with his children. He could barely concentrate on his work and he couldn't sleep either. He just paced around the house reliving the moments his children first called him Daddy and told him they loved him.

He turned on his side as he heard the bathroom door open. His smile dissolved as he saw Seyifunmi in a pair of jeans and a faded pink tee.

She had in her hand her used towel and dirty undies she walked to the burgundy, Chanel overnight bag by his wardrobe.

"Someone's awake." She quipped and opened the bag. She folded in her towel and underwear.

Dele glanced at the bedside clock. It was after eight. Where was she going?

"Where are you going?" He frowned and asked.

She chuckled and said, "Home, of course. Where else will I be going?"

His frown deepened. This was what he hated. That moment after a lovely weekend when she'd pack up and head back to her apartment in Surulere.

"Can't you go tomorrow morning?" He whined and knelt on the bed.

She smiled and said, "Tomorrow's Monday."

He raised his brow. "So?"

"So, I didn't bring any work clothes."

"You can wear one of my shirts and your jeans. I'm sure you'd look sexy in it." He said and crawled closer to where she was standing.

She giggled and said, "On a Monday? Are you trying to get me a query?"

He wrapped his arms around her waist. "Please stay."

"Dele, I can't."

He pressed his lips to her neck and she laughed. "Dele, you can't convince me with sex."

He pouted and said, "I'll do that stuff you like."

She guffawed and pulled away. "You're crazy. I have to go. Come and see me to my car."

He groaned.

"Fine. Let me change."

He put on a wife beater and a pair of old stone wash jeans. He carried her overnight bag and saw her to the parking lot. She gave him a lingering kiss aasked him not to miss her too much.

He stood there and watched till her car drove out of the gates. A familiar and dread tendril of loneliness wrapped its arms around him. He hated this feeling he got every time she drove off. He sighed.

It was high time he got to work to dissipate this feeling permanently. He was going to ask her to marry him,the way she wanted.

He rubbed the back of his neck and decided to place the call to the only person he knew could help.

Tinu.

Nah! I don't think so........ She loves Chris! Loved him then and still loves him.

If feelings were to crawl back, then that should have happened all these while they've been spending time together.

Episode 4 - PRP 101: INTRODUCTION TO PROPOSING MARRIAGE.

Tinu placed the bowl of fried battered peanuts down on the table as the doorbell rang. It was probably Ummi, Wahab's wife.

"Don't touch my peanuts." Tinu warned, glaring at Dele.

He smirked at her and the bell rang again.

"Don't worry, Tinu," Timi, Délé's closest friend said, "I'll make sure he doesn't."

"You think I trust you?" Tinu quipped and picked up her bowl of peanuts. "I don't trust any of you."

"Even me?" Yetunde, Timi's wife asked, laughing.

"Most especially you." Tinu replied and walked to the door. She unlocked it and came face to face with the smiling Hausa beauty.

The lady squealed and hugged Tinu.

"I came as soon as I could." Ummi announced and walked into the apartment. Tinu locked the door and walked back to the dining room.

Ummi hugged Dele and took a seat beside Yetunde, whom she hugged as well. She jabbed Timi with her shoulders and made fun of his bald head.

Timi had gone to get a trim and had fallen asleep. The barber had trimmed his hair to an all time low.

"Congrats, Dele." Ummi said and adjusted her veil.

"Why are you congratulating him?" Timi quipped. "He hasn't even asked her yet."

"Okay, okay, okay," Yetunde said, grinning and bustling with impatience. "Let's see the ring."

She propped her head on her hands.

Dele scratched his head. "I haven't gotten it yet."

They all groaned in exasperation.

"Am I supposed to have gotten it already?" Dele asked in confusion.

"No o. You're supposed to buy it after she has your first child." Timi said and hissed. "Idiot."

"Says the man who didn't even ask with a ring." Yetunde said and smacked her husband up the head.

"What?!" Tinu and Ummi cried in laughter.

"Nope. He was just sitting beside me in the living room and I got a text from him. I love you, you love me. Will you marry me?" Yetunde said.

Tinu and Ummi burst into laughter.

"What?!" Timi asked. "It was spontaneous and unconventional."

"And you said yes?!" Tinu bawled laughing.

"Of course. But I bought myself a ring." Yetunde said and kissed her husband.

"Tinu, please can I get a glass of water?" Ummi asked with tears spilling out of her eyes.

"Of course, honey." She turned to get a glass from the kitchen.

She returned to the dining to see Yetunde fawning over Ummi's engagement ring.

She handed her the glass and Ummi thanked her.

She sat beside Dele and asked, "What did I miss?"
She tossed a handful of burger peanuts into her mouth.

"She just told us how Wahab proposed to her. Wahab is so cute." Yetunde gushed.

Ummi sighed and said, "We were bethrothed since we were kids, so we practically grew up knowing we were going to get married. Along the line, we developed feelings for each other. But Wahab kept stalling. I decided I wasn't going to waste my life waiting for him to get married. I started my MBA at UNILAG.

Wahab came visiting one day and saw me with a couple of male colleagues. We were preparing for an exam. The next week, Waheed showed up one night at my hostel with the question: Will you marry me? spelt out with lit, gilded oil lamps with a string quartet serenade and flowers in tow."

"Awwn!" Tinu cooed and Timi gagged.

Yetunde swatted his arm and said, "I never knew Wahab had a romantic bone in his body."

"Me neither." Ummi said.

"I don't see how all these stories help me." Dele cried out in frustration.

Tinu chuckled and said, "You have to understand, there are two things to every proposal. The scenario and the ring. Both can be wow. Those take planning. Like Wahab's. Lovely proposal, even lovelier ring. Some guys manage to get away with neither. Like Timi," Tinu said pointing at him.

Ummi laughed and Yetunde said, "I wish I had spent more on the ring."

"O jebi." Timi said scowling.

"Never try that at home." Tinu warned and Ummi laughed again.

"You also have to understand that there's a private proposal and a public proposal. Just because a proposal is public doesn't make it wow. And just because a proposal is private doesn't mean it can't be spectacular." Tinu continued.

"Why are you not writing?" Timi scolded, "This is PRP 101: Introduction to proposing marriage."

Yetunde and Ummi burst into laughter and Tinu threw a peanut at Timi.

She smiled and continued, "You have to understand which will faze Seyifunmi. You know her better than anyone of us. You alone know what can wow her."

*****

Seyifunmi pulled the phone away from her ear and groaned. She'd run out of credit again. Who told her to migrate to a new data plan? The new plan came with a costlier call tariff.

"Dele, please can I borrow your phone? She asked.

He lifted his gaze from his laptop and raised a brow. "What for?"

She rolled her eyes. "I need to call my boss. It's urgent."

"Borrow na" He quipped and reclined in his seat.

"I'm already owing," she groaned.

He chuckled and said, "Big girl like you. Why don't you buy from your account?"

She stamped her feet in protest. "Ewo ni pelu gbogbo question yii? I haven't gotten a new ATM card yet, so I can't use my mobile banking app. Give me your phone." She said and stretched out her hand.
(What's with all the questions?)

He raised his brow, questioning her demanding tone.

"Please." She whined, pouting with puppy dog eyes.

"Fine." He said and unlocked his phone. He handed it to her.

"Thanks." She said.

She punched in her boss's number and paced as she waited for him to pick up the call.

"Hello sir. It's Seyifunmi. I'm sorry I ran out of credit." She said and paced out of the dining room.

She walked to their room and listed to her boss the details of the assignment he had given her.

"Okay, sir. I'll do that sir... No sir. You don't have to save this number. Have a nice evening, sir." She said and pulled the phone away.

She saw the call duration.

10:38

Ten minutes and thirty-eight seconds. Dele will kill me!

A dialogue box with his account balance popped up on the screen.

Her eyes popped out of their sockets.

No wonder he always called and could stay on the phone for close to an hour.

She berated herself. He was a CEO, and of one the most successful IT firms in the country.

Sometimes, she forgot.

She contemplated sharing some of his credit, but she shrugged it off. If she wanted credit, she could simply ask him.

With free access to his phone, her brain itched her to snoop a bit.

Find out all the stuff he did on his phone.

Before she could tap the menu icon, a notification flashed on the screen.

Your order from Luxuriosa Jewellers will be arriving tomorrow. Thank you for shopping with us.

Luxuriosa Jewellers?

A smile crossed her face.

Was he buying what she thought he was buying?

She tapped the Google icon and typed in the search bar Luxuriosa Jewellers. Second after, the search results popped up.

Their website, Articles and reviews, Pinterest.

One result stood out. Luxuriosa Jewellers carry a line of beautiful engagement rings.

She tapped on it and the page opened. She scrolled down the black print and saw pictures upon pictures of engagement rings and wedding bands.

Oh my goodness! He is going to propose soon.

She wanted to squeal, but she knew she'd be busted if he heard her scream. She jumped up and down, fanning her teary eyes.

He was going to do it.

She stared at her bare, left ring finger and started picturing a ring on it.

Yes! She whisper-yelled.

After close to four years, he was going to do it.

"Seyifunmi, aren't you done yet? I need to check something on my phone." Dele called out.

No wonder he was so hesistant to give her his phone.

Tomorrow, she'd be getting her ring.

"Here comes the bride!" She squealed.

"What did you say?!" Dele shouted.

"Nothing. I'm coming."

"Be fast, jo."

She exhaled and tried to kill the smile on her face but it was immortal. She shook her head and walked back to the dining room.

"Thank you." She said kissed his cheek.

Thank you for finally making up your mind to do it.

"You're welcome." He said and collected his phone. He scrolled through his phone as she sat beside him.

She watched the man that would soon become her husband.

Her husband.

Her smile, rather than die, thrived and lit up her face. Dele would become her husband.

Any day now, he'd ask for her hand and she'd say yes.

"Are you okay?" Dele asked with a brow raised in confusion.

She chuckled and waved it off. "I'm better than okay. I'm fantastic!" She declared.

"Did your boss promise you a raise?" He asked.

She scoffed. "Nah!"

"Then what's with the creepy happy smile?" Dele asked and dropped his phone.

"Can't a girl be happy?" She said, laughing and stacked up the files in front of her.

"This isn't just happiness. You're ecstatic. What is it?" Dele asked smiling.

"Nothing. Just that my difficult to please boss praised me." She answered and stood.

His brow shot up again.

"Are you sure that's why you're so happy?" He asked smiling.

"Yes!" She said and kissed him on the lips.

"I'm going to bed." She said and left before she gave herself away.

*****
"Seyifunmi, please help me get the door." Dele shouted from the restroom.

Her heart thumped as her cheeks swelled with a smile. The ring had arrived.

She skipped to the living room and want to receive the package in a brown and gold cardboard bag. She signed for it and smiled extra friendly at the delivery boy.
She shut the door and walked back to the living room.

What exactly was Délé's plan asking her to get the package?

He was probably going to ask her to open it and then he'd go down on one knee and say those magic, five words.

Seyifunmi, will you marry me?

Yes! Her heart screamed and she tried to calm and school her emotions so Dele wouldn't realize she'd known.

"Oh, it's here already!" Dele said from behind her.

She nodded, not trusting her voice to say yes without conveying the ton of emotion in it.

He collected the bag from her.

"Thanks!"

She nodded while inside she was screaming, 'Get on with it!'

"Please, come and see this and let me know what you think." He said and sat. She sat too.

Okay? Maybe he isn't the kneeling type. Who cares? I'm sha getting my ring today.

He brought out a red, leather box from the brown and gold, silk pouch in the bag.

Here it comes. Her head screamed.

He flipped open the box and she melted in disappointment. Her animated smile washed away like color being washed from a fresh painting.

What the f*ck is this?

"W-what is this?" Seyifunmi asked.

He turned to look at her in shock. "It's a brooch. I got it for my mum. Her birthday is coming soon. What do you think? The info said it's white gold and and moonstone. Do you think she'll like it?"

Seyifunmi resisted the urge to hiss. She scratched her head and said, "Dele, she's your mother. I think you'd know better what she likes."

She stood and left him there with tears pooling in her eyes.

Nice decoy move by Dele in beating down seyifunmi's expectation.
His instincts must have told him that her usual happiness was due to the possibility that she saw the notification about the delivery of the engagement package.

Episode 4 - PRP 101: INTRODUCTION TO PROPOSING MARRIAGE.

Seyifunmi resisted the urge to hiss. She scratched her head and said, "Dele, she's your mother. I think you'd know better what she likes."

She stood and left him there with tears pooling in her eyes.

Seyi sorry iyeh...urs is coming soon.
