I have noticed the trend amongst most women divorcees.
Perhaps they don't want to draw attention and investigative questions from friends to themselves . For whatever reason, they are just reluctant to drop the name and revert to their father's name.
I thought dropping the man's name is part of the divorce package.

Perhaps there could be some technical reasons, let's hear from lawyers.

Or they might have acquired a property or investment with the name,or even have some certificate with their husband's name.Just like some women still bears their father's surname few years after marriage.

You don’t have to drop your ex-husband’s last name after any type of divorce. No man/court can compel the woman to drop the name, it’s her name and she can do what she wants with it.

OP, some keep it for..

a. They’ve had it for a while and are used to it.
b. Hassle of changing it.
c. Consistency, they want to have same last name with their kids.
d. Prestigious last name.
e. The woman has created a successful business with the name.
f. It’s a nice name.
The only Nigerian woman I can think of is Senator Ita-Giwa, even though she was married to Dele Giwa for 10 seconds.

A common reason is to have the same last name as the kids of the union.

The choice of dropping an ex name goes two ways

It's either both parties agrees she keeps the me after divorce

Or she drops the me for her to return to her maiden name and either remarry bear the new husband's name or retains her maiden name

There is nothing like she bears it before and there is no big deal about it

That’s not how it works, there’s nothing like “both parties agree” the name is the woman’s and she can do with it whatever she wants. Keep it or not keep it. Nobody can force her not to use it, it’s literally a name.

Most of the time, the names are on official documents etc. So it's difficult to change or alter.
I have a family member, who is divorced and she told us she will change her name but that will be after her retirement.

Due to the facts that, some of her certificates and the bank she uses especially the one connected to her pay slip is on her husband's name. And that's not so easy to change.

I remember asking a woman in my office why she was still bearing her hubby's name and she told me to ward off all those ogas in the office who once they know she is divorced will be on her neck. Some women say they keep the name because of their kids. We Sha know it is mainly because of societal stigmatization divorcees go through.

1. Too much paper work abeg. All credentials acquired during marriage will have to be changed? The stress is too much.

2. To identify with the child’s/children’s last name.

3. To differentiate from single-single/never married.

4. Divorce does not mean you have to change your name. All about choice.

I will take my time to change my name. No rush.

She changed her name because she wanted to not because of a court order. Also, we know she changed it on her social media but officially we don’t know if she really did.

Celebrities say they take people to court all the time but they never do. No court will ever tell you to stop using your own name.

Just try changing name on BVN, international passport, NIMC and you will understand why some people don't even bother .

Story!! What's in a name that you guys are so fixated on? I know someone whose surname is Taiye, got married to a man whose surname is also Taiye. So what is there to change if they divorce?? Abeg the major reason is the stress involved in changing names especially on documents.
