Federal government Wednesday approved the sum of $3.02bn for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri eastern narrow gauge railway.

Disclosing this the minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, said “The Federal Executive Council has approved the award of contracts for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri eastern narrow gauge railway, with new branch lines and trans-shipment facilities.

“The council also approved the construction of a new deep seaport in Bonny, under PPP and the construction of a railway industrial park in Port Harcourt.

“The railway line will be at the cost of $3,020,279,549. The industrial park, which is under PPP, at no cost to Federal Government, will cost $241,154,389.31. The Bonny deep seaport will cost $461,924,369, at no cost to the Federal Government.

“The Port Harcourt to Maiduguri narrow gauge railway will have new branch lines: from Port Harcourt to Bonny and from Port Harcourt to Owerri are new lines.

“There is another connecting narrow gauge to standard gauge at Kafanchan. There is a branch line from Gombe or before Maiduguri to Damaturu and Gashau.”

Very commendable..when it comes to rail transport development, the Buhari's govt has done well. If quality critical infrastructures are built, it will serve the people for many years.

Even though Buhari has failed in every other thing, I have to sincerely commend him for some infrastructure he is putting in place in Nigeria.

He is building the Country not the people but you have to "build the man to build the community".

And again, Amaechi shames Wike. While Amaechi is developing critical infrastructure across the country, Wike is promoting Ikwerre superiority and bribing judges everywhere.

Narrow guage in this age and time Amaechi. You built standard guage in West and North, and you plan narrow guage for your people for $3.2b

Lagos to Ibadan is $1.9b and about 200km for standard guage. Why don't you do PH to Makurdi, a distance of 380km with that $3.2b and when there is more money, we can do Makurdi to Maiduguri.

In any case, I know it will never get off pipeline until this administration is over. I am deeply disappointed in you if this is your plan for us

My question is "how important is the railway"?

Will it improve our economy drastically ??

Will it take care of unemployment??

The USA became the world's biggest economy largely by expanding its railroad infrastructure starting from the late 19th century.

Rail transport has the effect of drastically reducing the cost of transporting goods, and hence, drastically reducing the cost of doing business, which leads to an EXPLOSION in commerce, trade, and manufacturing.

Nigeria has a national railway masterplan which connects every single state by rail, and this latest project is just one of many in the pipeline.

Kudos to the Buhari administration.

Unfair criticism. The Port Harcourt - Maiduguri line is being rehabilitated, as there is actually an old line there, albeit narrow gauge. The Lagos-Ibadan line etc are brand new lines, and so had to be built standard gauge in line with modern convention.

Narrow gauge lines are still operated all over the world, and it would have constituted gross wastage of public funds to abandon the current Port-Harcourt - Maiduguri line to build a standard gauge line at perhaps triple the price.

In fact, ''In some countries, narrow gauge is the standard; Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, New Zealand, South Africa, and the Australian states of Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania..''

Who wants to go to Maiduguri, is a waste of government funds. It has no benefits to the south south probably the northerners though. Clueless government, instead of them to embark on a project that will bring economical benefits to the nation.

Bro,
You are a PIPE dreamer to think Buhari will build this line. Just think for a moment how much it will take to construct a railway bridge over the waters from PH to Bonny. Then from PH to Maiduguri. Yet the total amount they hope to borrow is $3 billion dollars? grin grin grin grin

Lol... this is just 2023 election money that they are spoiling for how to get Chinese loans for railway and simply use it for elections.

Recall when Buhari removed a whopping $1 billion dollars from the foreign reserve prior to 2019 presidential elections claiming he would fund the military with state of the art weapons to win Boko Haram. Ask yourself where is that money or the weapons? Answer: The money was all diverted to fund the 2019 re-election! As they will do with this $3 billion grin

Good.. Although it is quite disheartening that this infrastructures are just being put in place in the year 2020. With the oil boom and high prices and when the economy was 'supposedly' working, infrastructure were non-existent.

You can only truly grow as far as the level of infrastructure in a country.

Will the next administration follow up, and ensure completion of the uncompleted projects ?

It is very very clear now that Amechi is probably APC presidential candidate plot for 2023

Else they won't go through the trouble of trying to launder his image with so much empty promises of railway to this place and that. When they already claim to have a railway development master plan.
