Hi everyone, Secondary production which involves processing and value addition is the most profitable and least risk sector in agribusiness aside these it creates jobs and return on investment is fast and guaranteed. Since over seventy percent of secondary production is fixed capital in terms of machineries total loss is almost impossible as the factory could be leased or the machines sold in case of improper management, continuous dwindling or loss of revenue. Unlike primary production that is almost dependent on nature(weather and atmospheric conditions) that's at times beyond human control, competition from other processors and government regulations which are surmountable are challenges of secondary production.
As rice farmers we are looking for partners who can invest in small-medium scale rice mill that can process a ton of paddy rice daily. We are sure of the availability of the raw material and profitability of the venture. We want to establish a stable and reliable offtaker for our produce, making suitable and stone free rice available for average Nigerians and making profits concurrently. Small and medium scale industries play major role in economic development of developing nations.

Procedures involved in paddy rice processing are;

Soaking

Grading


SOAKING
Depending on the dryness of the paddy, it can be soaked for 24 or 48hrs with hot water, freshly harvested paddy takes 24hrs while the dried paddy is soaked for 48hrs. The reasons for soaking includes increasing moisture content of the paddy, enhancing the release of nutrient to the white rice, easy milling and reduce breakages.

PARBOILING
The process of exposing the soaked paddy to steam at high temperature till it reach gelatinization (breaking down the intermolecular bonds of starch). It can be between 2-8hrs depending on the intensity of the heat.
In local or small scale productions, drums are used while big thanks are used in industrial scale.

DRYING
It is the removal of moisture from the parboiled rice by sun or industrial dryer. In local processing depending solely on sun for drying, this where stone and other particles got into the rice most and also in raining season it takes days for rice to be properly dried in some cases the quality of the rice is reduced when it's touched by rainfall. All the challenges faced in drying has been solved by industrial dryers which makes indoor drying possible. Paddy rice can be milled at 12-14 degree Celsius.
Industrial dryers use charcoal and or electricity.

DEHUSKING/MILLING
Removal of the outer layer of the dried grain. Rice bran and the white rice are the products gotten, rice bran is the outer layer which is also very useful and generate income but our concentration here now is the edible part called milled or white rice. Since dehusking is what lead to the desired products, it's the most integral part of the whole operations and more technical because machine is involved. It's the machine used that determine either production is small, medium or large scale based on the number of tons the machine can handle daily, monthly or annually without strain or stress. There are integrated rice milling machines that are automated completely requiring little or no human supervision except getting the milled rice at the other end used in large scale production. however, our focus is the Small and medium scale production in which the machine use requires more attention it should be noted most of this category of machine cannot mill more than 2-3tons conveniently daily. The work of the operator is to ensure that the rice bran is completely removed, breakage is reduced and the white rice is clean. 55-60% of milled rice is expected, that is, a tone of paddy rice without much chaff and dirts give 550-600kg of milled rice.

DESTONING
Stones and pebbles got into paddy rice during manual threshing when harvesting, drying on sack or floors and packing the milled rice on the ground during processing. The major complaint by consumers against local rice over time is the presence of stones. This challenge has been reduced if not removed by the use of destoners, which are used in separating the pebbles from the milled rice. There are locally fabricated destoners and imported ones, the locally fabricated destoners are cheap, accessible, easy to maintain and also effective.

GRADING
Separating the breakages from whole grains complete the process. In most cases when the processing procedures are adequately followed grading may not be necessary but whenever the breakages is over 15% it's easily visible hence grading is necessary. The clean parboiled rice is ready for weighing and packaging.

If we fail to invest in agro industries and continue to finance primary production with the aim of exportation, we are halting jobs creation, our fate in recouping even our capital suffers when the foreign offtakers fail to pick or pay as most investors are facing now and we are defeating industrial competitions that can give birth to new products.

The more processing factories we have the closer we get to exporting secondary products.

Alright

To most rice consumers, rice is rice but to us processors we know rice in different varieties, from lowland to upland, faros to sippi, long grains to short and most importantly from the ones you Cook in the morning and cannot eat in the evening to the ones that still retain it's sweet taste till the next day.
