I experienced similar ordeal until
I began to read the Bible for myself instead of waiting for pastor sermon.
Things began to change the moment I began to read the Bible. I discovered more ethical issues. God servant instructing wild animals to devor children for mocking his bald head. I remembered my youngest brother had earlier mocked my granddad for having wrinkled face. My grand dad laughed at the boy . If he could wave such aside without getting angry, why would a prophet of God kill children for such? While I was battling with the best way to make sence of this? The story of God killing the man who tried to save the ark of the covenant disturbed my spirit. By now, you must have guessed that I have a phobia for violence and death.

The numerous death stories made me anxious that I stopped reading old testament and concentrated on new testament. The Gospel God was a God of Love, compassion and forgiveness.I found it impossible to reconcile the two. It is either they are two different gods or one God who repented . I prefer to go by my third explanation + MAN PERCEPTION OF GOD CHANGED OVER THE YEARS. The old testament toman perceived God the same way they perceived their elders- one to be obeyed blindly and feared. Jesus saw God as a friend to be loved and treated as equal to oneself . Jesus philosophy seemed to resonate with me.

As I studied further, I realized a variation in the teaching of Paul. Jesus seemed to break down patriarchy. Paul supported patriarchy. Jesus taught faith and works as requirement for salvation. Paul promoted only works. I am saddled with the same task of reconciling the two.

I chose to stick with a mentor. It is easier than for a growing child to combine series of mentors and trying to find a middle line amidst the cobtrafiction. No two individual think exactly in the same way. ..Jesus is the mentor . . His philosophy is more humanistic.
Focus more on Jesus and less on the Bible to give your life to Jesus

Mat 16:24 KJV Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Technically or grammatically, the phrase "give my life to Jesus/God" is not found in the Bible. But the concept is very much found. It is commitment and consecration to follow Jesus. It is the life that happens after salvation.

While salvation is not of works and all you actually do is to believe(Accept, Believe and Confess). It happens immediately. Christ's work of redemption is in salvation. The implication is that you are no more your own. You have been bought with the precious blood of Jesus Christ. You now belong to Him.

Okay, that's your born again clean slate. Now your working out your salvation begins proper. You are no more a sinner but a forgiven child of God. Now, you have to breathe, eat and grow and every other thing babies do. This is the real/Your turn GIVING your life to Christ part. It is a daily one step/breath at a time thing.

Luk 9:23 KJV And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

It is a "giving" because you have flesh as a human being. Your spirit was renewed or changed, so that you can be a child of God who is Spirit and Father of spirits. God/Christ gave you that, you can never do it on your own or through any other means. But you as a human being have a mind that must be renewed, and a flesh that is pretty much useless as you may soon find out if you grow enough.
You have a part to play in renewing your mind, and taming your flesh. This is the consecration and commitment. This is you giving your life to Christ, denying self. There are many practical ways to this.

Repentance is first and foremost.

You have to truly repent and turn away from your wicked ways.

Talk to God from wherever you are and empty your heart before Him.

Then you can start living the life of the righteous in accordance to God's Word and instructions.

Study the teachings of Jesus and do whatever He says, and it shall be well with you.

God bless.

Just study the life of christ, read widely and make extensive research about him. Follow his teachings as summed up in Matt chapt 5 to chapt 7. Jesus did not do church or religion. Those were the apostle paul's invention. Jesus's teachings is the way to life.

Hi there.

Here's what I read in the Bible:

12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name
John 1:12 (NKJV)

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
John 3:14-18 (NKJV)

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9 (NKJV)

Practically the whole of the New Testament says the above in one way or another. It is important too to pay attention to what the Bible says about Abraham even in Genesis: he believed in the Lord and that was credited to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6; Romans 4:3).

Because you say, that what you believe is "that christ is the way, the truth and the life," it seems to me that you are already saved, born again/anew/from above, a child of God, a believer in Jesus Christ. Unless, of course, by "Christ" you don't mean Jesus Christ Who is God Who became Man to die on the Cross for our sins and who was raised from the dead for our justification. If that is the Christ you mean, then you are already saved. When you say that He is the Way, I assume that you mean to Salvation. When you say that He is the Truth, I assume that you mean the Truth that saves us and sets us free. When you say the Life, I assume that you mean the Life that we who were dead in our sins can hope to have by faith in Jesus Christ. Because that is what the Bible means by those terms.

Please, know that salvation is not hard at all. It is easy, so easy that even a small child with no understanding of life can get saved. There is nothing demanded of you in order to be saved other than a willingness to believe that Jesus Christ Who is God became Man too and died for our sins. There is nothing more to it than that.

What makes many people to feel like they aren't believers is often guilt because of sin, and I suspect that that is what you are struggling with as well. But salvation is not the removal of all possibility of sinning against God. Even very mature believers still stumble and sin against the Lord from time to time. We are told as much in the Bible even:

2 For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.
James 3:2 (NKJV)

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. 1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
1 John 1:8-2:1 (NKJV)

We all sin. Sometimes we sin very grievously even after we have come to believe. When that happens, the Lord disciplines us in keeping with the seriousness of our sin.

4 You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. 5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; 6 For whom the LORD loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.” 7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Hebrews 12:4-11 (NKJV)

The Lord does not ignore sin. He punishes it in order to teach us (that is, His children) to stay away from it, but He never rejects any child of His just because they sinned. He can discipline a believer right up to the point of killing them (something the Bible calls "the sin into death," see 1 John 5:16; 1 Corinthians 5:5), if they are unrepentant about their sin but also unwilling to give up their faith in Jesus Christ, but He does not cast them away. In fact, when the Lord kills a sinning believer, it is in order to save them from the condemnation of unbelief, because sin attacks faith and unrepentant sinning is able to destroy faith (Hebrews 3:12-13).

It is possible to relax after hearing the above and feel that as long as your salvation is not threatened directly by sin, you don't have much to worry about, but it is wise to not test the Lord by sinning arrogantly. His discipline is not pleasant. Think about Saul. He suffered God-sent depression and mental issues because of the torment of an evil spirit that God sent after him until he was killed in battle. His lineage was nearly completely wiped out after him too. His dynasty was destroyed. What about David? After the Uriah/Bathsheba affair, his baby son died, Amnon his son raped Tamar his daughter leading to Amnon's murder by Absalom and the eventual rebellion of Absalom against David. It was 14 years of pain for him for that sin. Suffice to say that when the Lord disciplines us, we will wish that we never sinned. So, it is best to stay away from sin after we have become believers.

When we sin though, we ought to confess our sins and rest in the assurance that God forgives us because He does (1 John 1:9). It does not remove the eventuality of discipline. But it makes discipline easier to bear. In fact, after we confess all discipline that we suffer is really suffering for blessing (James 1:12).

But how to stay away from sin? It isn't very easy. In fact, it is impossible to be perfectly sinless in this mortal body. But we can get better and better at staying away from sin by growing spiritually:

11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ
Ephesians 4:11-12 (NKJV)

We can get better at walking righteously with the Lord. But it doesn't get better just by squaring your shoulders and straining yourself against the sin in your flesh. That gets old real quick. Many who have gone down that path have been frustrated for their efforts, assuming they did not end up in legalism and self-righteousness. The better way is by growing spiritually, since the Spirit inside us is opposed to the flesh.

16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
Galatians 5:16-17 (NKJV)

The more spiritual you are, the less fleshly or carnal you will be. But that only comes by reading the Bible, seeking qualified teaching on it, believing what you hear, applying it to your life, and helping other believers to do the same as far as you can. That is what spiritual growth is (Ephesians 4:11-16). It is hard work, I'll warn you. There are plenty enough people who start enthusiastically and then slack off. It does not end. You begin and you have to go on until the end of your life or until Jesus returns. You can never stop. Stopping is the recipe for spiritual disaster. If you never start, you are already in spiritual disaster, however. But I promise you, it is a most rewarding thing.

1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Romans 12:1-2 (NKJV)

It changes you to learn and understand what the Bible teaches. That change is what the Bible calls maturity (that is, spiritual maturity):

6 However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.
1 Corinthians 2:6 (NKJV)

14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
Hebrews 5:14 (NIV)

15 All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you.
Philippians 3:15 (NIV)

If you persist along that path, you will get better and better not only at staying away from sin, but also at discerning God's Will and also at doing all the positive things that He wants you to do. At the top of this mountain are the three crowns of righteousness, life, and glory. That is the peak of Christian eternal reward. Not many will achieve that height because not many are willing to do the work of spiritual growth, progress, and production. But if you choose it, it can be yours. It is not exclusive to any believer or category of believers. It is not only the right of believers to strive for it, it is also our responsibility because by these rewards we glorify God (e.g. John 15:8 ).

I have prayed for you here. I hope that these words help you.

If you wish to look for a worthy pastor-teaching ministry (and they are not many or easy to find), here are a couple of options:

https://ichthys.com (this is where I have been growing spiritually since October 2017. I highly recommend it and I'm very strongly affiliated to it too. It is very highly text-based though, so you will have very plenty to read on there including a systematic theology, that is, a topical discussion of the major doctrines of the Bible, and a highly comprehensive discussion of Eschatology in two series. If the reading gets a bit onerous or difficult, there are audio files for many of the studies on the site.)

www.bibleacademyonline.com (this is a video-based ministry. It is also connected to Ichthys, but it is run by an independent pastor-teacher. It is also very highly comprehensive, so you will find a lot of material on various subjects of the Bible and even verse-by-verse studies of different books of the Bible on there.)

Pastor-teaching ministries are not easy to attain to, so very many people who do have pastor-teaching gifts never qualify for ministry. Many of the churches and ministries you may know of are not by any stretch of the human imagination true pastor-teaching ministries. The pastor-teacher's job from the Lord is to teach everything that the Bible has to teach to anyone that the Lord brings to them. This takes deliberate effort at some significant skills besides spiritual growth which even pastor-teachers must also undertake like everyone else. It takes dedication and grit for a pastor-teacher to go through the business of preparation for ministry. Once they have, they are able to help fellow believers get where they need to go spiritually. So, please don't take this matter of finding a good pastor-teaching ministry lightly. They are not so easy to find.

When you do find one, always test it to be sure that it is worthy of your trust.

15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
Matthew 7:15-20 (NIV)

33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.
Matthew 12:33-35 (NIV)

If they teach things that you see clearly written in the Bible, then give them the benefit of the doubt and learn from them. Always ask questions if things don't seem straight or aren't clear to you. If they teach things that force the Bible to be false in some way, then you should get as far away from them as you can as fast as you can. False teaching is inimical to the spiritual health of believers. It can even cause believers to apostatize. See 2 Peter 2 and Jude 1:5-16 for a discussion about false teachers. They are really dangerous to the Church. In fact, many of the apostolic epistles were written to oppose them and protect the Church from them. So, please be careful about the choices that you make in this matter.

Cheers.

9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus,
and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead,
thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness;

It's quite simple but hard.

1) Surrender completely to Christ. Ask him to save you.
2) Listen and sing gospel songs constantly.
3) Associate with well known Christians on and offline.
4) Visit a bible believing church.
5) Listen to God's generals messages both local and international..

Prayers, praise and worship will follow suit...
